Strength or StaminaFollow

#1 Jun 04 2004 at 1:27 PM Rating: Decent
I recently started a Dark Elf Warrior and have a question. Is it better to dump all money into Stamina equip or Strength? I already have put some money into Stamina equip and really don't see a difference. Will this get better in the later levels?

P.S. Equipment and money is not uber for the warrior, i think stamina is around 156 for now.

Stamina = more hit points, more hit point = good.

on a less simplified level i would look at the balance between the two and cost to upgrade, a full set of crusty should be pretty cheap and would boost both.

In the old days crusty was worn upto level 45 when tae ew was an upgrade for it. now the options are far wider but the arguement is the same.

myself i would get sta upto 200 and then balance strength from there.

Str doesn't matter. I would suggest after getting sta high, get dex up to increase weapon proc rate.

Here is my dissenting opinion:

You said you 'recently' started a warrior, implying you are low level. At low levels, stamina has less of an impact on hp than you get at higher levels. I would concentrate on HP gear and AC until you 1) are higher level and a point of stamina adds 5 hit points, and 2) have a proccing weapon to worry about dex.

To see what you are actually getting per stamina point, look at your HP, remove a piece of gear with some stamina on it, and check the difference. Ultimately, you want as many HP as you can get, and it makes no sense to just look at stamina as if it was an absolute get at all costs kind of thing. Calculate the hp you are going to get from any piece of gear and compare that to what you can get with pure hp on it.

Tarv makes a good point that hit points should be a top priority; however, it shouldn't be the only priority. As a dark elf you have significantly less starting strength than other races, and depending upon how you distributed your original points you may want to look at some strength enhancing gear as well. I would argue that there are three major components every tank class needs to take a serious look at: hit points, armor class, and damage per second. All three are important. If your AC or DPS is insufficient you’re going to need a lot of heals from the cleric in order to compensate.

Strength adds additional damage output and also increases your ATK rating. Attack is especially important the higher you level, for it will adjust the mean damage output by sliding the graph to the left. In other words a higher ATK rating means you will hit for max damage more often, with the average damage increasing as well. Remember that dead things don’t attack or cause damage (with the exception of the undead). The quicker your opponent dies (or is unable to hit you), the less hit points you’re going to use up in the process.

HP, AC, agro is all a tank should worry about. Leave the DPS job to dps classes. DPS is a nice addition, but it is about the last thing a tank should be concerned on.

I'd say go with hp/sta as opposed to strength.

As you level and more gear becomes available, there will multitudes of different stat upgrades on them -- you'll likely be overwhelmed with str as it seems the easiest to upgrade.

Just my two cents though.

At lower levels AC is everything!! Then as you progress focus on stamina first and HP second. Eventually stamina will be maxed out when you're fully buffed and it will be all about getting hit point gear. Don't worry about strength, it's on so many items, you'll get it anyway. As a warrior you don't need to worry about DPS either, not your role. You need to be able to hold agro and stay alive.

65 warrior speaking hehe.

Strength is easy to max out even as a halfling warrior with base strentgh of 85. Also... the main job of the warrior is to absorb damage, not deal it out. The choice should be obvious.

Granted, I'm not 65. Nor a warrior. But I'd think especially at lower levels, raw hp > ac.

But that's just me.

More of a question than an answer:

This comes from having an Erudite Paladin whose strength is so low he is encumbered if he looks hard at a backpack.

Since one effect of encumbrance is that AGI drops then presumably an encumbered tank will lose AC and avoidance?

Would this mean that for strength-challenged races like DE a certain amount of STR was necessary to prevent negating the benefits of AC?

The old advice on raw hp would still be good if it wasn't so darned easy for low levels to get an extra 800 from the nearest Temp vendor. I always used to gear low levels I was going to level fast with +hp here and there. Now it is simpler just to keep them Temped.

dark elves dont have the agi problem that erudites do they start with like 90 agi and erudites with like 70 agi, so its harder for a dark elf to get encumbered under the 75 it takes to make a real difference in AC. If your a new player to the race/class I would say put half in str and half in sta and you will be fine. If you have experience or are twinked put it all in Stamina you will thank yourself later on. If you have already set those starting stats then go AC/hit points for gear next criteria should be resists and then lastly is sta/str items.

I don't recall whether a Dark Elf and Wood Elf have the same starting stats or not, but from the point of view of a Wood Elf, you ignore strength at your own peril.

Strength is important for melees, whether tanking or not, and Elves have poor starting strength relative most other melee types.

It is easy to become encumbered enough to seriously effect your performance, it does add significantly to damage output, particularly with high damage type weapons.

To say a warrior is a tank there for should not worry about DPS is crazy in the extreme.

A warrior is a significant DPS class and should always be viewed as such.

All of the above has been parsed and proved a hundred times over, you should spend some time going through the stickies over on Steel Warriors for a much broader discussion of these matters.

Final note, most min/maxers go for Ogre or Troll warriors, most of those guys simply don't comprehend the problem from the point of view of a wood elf or dark elf (I presume) (and Erudite accordig to Cobra). Just a spare set of weapons and a back pack full of loot can render you nigh on helpless.
