Is Sony automattically ordering Omens of War for it's playerFollow

#1 May 28 2004 at 1:17 PM Rating: Default
I logged on to EQ today to play a quicky before work and downloaded the newest patch (or something). I then noticed that SONY has automatically ordered Omens of War for me. I had no intentions of getting this expansion and if they are charging me for a game, i am officially ending my subscription with them. They have no right to "Force" (by force i mean: to intentionally push products on me, without BOLDBOLD wording and a quick, with quick and easy cancelation).

I hope i am wrong, can someone set me straight or shall i just cancle the whole subscription now?
Thank you!

i would not put it past them to do that.

you have a few choices.

1. deffinatly contact the BBB and file a formal complaint.
2. contact SoE at their CS and billing e-mail address and file a formal complaint.
3. request a full refund, and then ask for a free month for this inconvienience they have caused you. doubtful you will get the free month, but does not hurt to ask.
4. contact your CC, and inform them of exactly what happend and that you did not order this expansion, and that you are refusing to pay for this expansion.

4a. side note** your CC will at that point lock your CC until the dispute is resolved. this means you will have zero(0) access to your CC for anything. you can then turn around and bill SoE for this inconvience again they have caused you in resolving this issue of their false billing without authorization.

FYI. if that is what they are doing, that is against Federal Trade laws, and SoE will/can get a HUGE fine.

would not hurt to contact the Federal Trade Commision about it too.

Are you sure you didn't click the wrong side of the screen. I have accidently purchased Gates of Discord twice prior to it's release by clicking the wrong button only to realize the download has began and my credit card on file was going to be paid. Each time I had to call Sony and have it cancelled. I never was billed but it was a pain each and every time to fix. I was glad to see the new log in screen because at least it is centered in the screen where you have at least a chance.

I would call Sony and find out what has or hasn't happen to your account. They way the explained it to me is this...

You can download it but until it is paid for they won't let you turn on the expansion.

Hopefully a simple phone call will fix this.

I think Sony needs to have more than a one click button to purchase expansions just to offset this type of error.

Also, they seemed to have switched the positions of the "order now" and "I'll pass" buttons. Used to be your cursor appeared on the lower right, where the "later" button was, and the "order" button was across on the lower right. For this expansion, they are flipped and my cursor appears each time right over the "order" button. I believe if you hit "enter" it also orders it.

Nonetheless, I am pretty careful. I move the damn mouse over. I hit "later". But I got this message anyhow that I had ordered it. It had instructions for cancelling the order by visiting the website, I belive, and made specific reference to logging in and going to "orders" and hitting some kind of cancel button there. Haven't done it yet as I'm on the linux machine and their site never works right with my browser.

Seems head of CS @ Sony has officially announced OOW will be extended and not scheduled to be released till late August. This is due to the rising armies of frustrated customers that are tired of lagging, crashing and log in problems. It just recently occured to the head man in charge to fix the bugs before releasing this new expansion.

That being said if you are tired of the OOW preorder window popping up I cut and pasted this information from the everquest.com technical board.

To avoid seeing the order Omens window, edit this section of your eqlsPlayerData.ini file:

OmensFirstOffer=1100000000
OmensLastOffer=1100000000

The CS that runs the board confirmed it was a fix to stop that window. I haven't tried it so understand if you use it, do so at your own risk.

thnx folks for the info, i may of hit the order now button (cursor automatically over button). I am pretty carefull about that, you would think that they would have a "Are you sure wish to purchase said item" , pop up after the click for a safe fall.

Thnx again for info

Forced advertisement and forced sale. How many people would actually go to the trouble of cancelling it? If 10 ***** up and only 1 doesn't call CS to get the credit they made 1 sale they otherwise wouldn't make.

Any Sony has to hold a summit and try to figure out why their players hate them and are leaving them in droves. You'd think they would put 2 and 2 together.

Actually, I saw that message as well and I think it's just a result of poor wording. I think they left out an IF. As in, 'IF you ordered this and would like to cancel (presumably because of the delay)....yadda yadda yadda'

That's just my impression, though.

I ordered OOW through Sony but wanted to cancel in favor of purchasing through EB via Alla. I went to the Sony webpage and then to my account page. There was an option to cancel any preorder that I had on file. With a click of the mouse the preorder was gone. And besides, they don't charge your cc until the day OOW goes live (which is now 8/31).

Sure you didnt just misread the patch message:-

May 27th, 2004
-------------------

Omens of War has a new expected live date of August 31, 2004. We appreciate your pre-order and if you wish to leave it in place, you do not need to do anything. We will not charge your credit card until the day the expansion actually goes live.
I think you maybe just misread this:-

If you wish to cancel your pre-order you may follow the steps below. You may cancel your pre-order at any time prior to the live date.

Directions to Cancel Pre-Order
1. Visit Station Store https://store.station.sony.com/index.jsp
2. Go to Billing Info and sign in
3. View Current pre-orders
4. Click Cancel button; you will receive a cancellation email
5. Return to Station Store and re-purchase this product using the most up to date information.

Thank you!

This is the message I recieved and for sure have not pre-ordered. Also is much easier way to check and cancel instead of using that new phangled phone thingy..

I must have misread the patch. I did check my account at Sony web-page and nothing was ordered.

Though I do think the patch wording is a little misleading.

Thanx again for the info and setting me straight.

That's where my money is.

I love the weeks before each expansion. It's Sony's fault I clicked a button I didn't take 3/10's of a second to read! It's Sony's fault that they don't support my non-MS-because-MS-Sucks-browser and I can't cancel! Sony probably charged my credit card even though it says they won't charge my credit card and they didn't actually charge my credit card! But they probably did! Sony must have switched the buttons around and made me click a button! Do you know how long it takes to figure out which button says "Later"?!?!?!

I'd love to listen to that BBB call.
"Hello! Sony charged my CC without my permission! Do Something!"
"How did that happen?"
"There was a button I clicked that I thought said no but really said yes"
"Um. Ok. How much did they charge you?"
"Well, nothing. They didn't charge the card yet. But they will in 6 weeks! That's wrong!"
"Did you cancel your order with them?"
"No. Why should I have to do cancel an order I placed because I clicked a button I didn't read?? Hello? Hello?"

7 Expansions and I have yet to pre-order one that I didn't want to pre-order. The one that I did pre-order and cancel a few days later (So's to get the toy for buying the box) took about 20 seconds to do so. Maybe I'm special :)

You're right. We are all responsible for reading the buttons before we hit them.

It's also a reasonable assumption that people have logged into the game so many hundreds of times we guide our cursors automatically to the hotspots we know from previous experience the buttons should be.

I sincerely doubt the position swap of the buttons was an innocent matter of the screen designer's artistic choice.

We generally resent when we feel a merchant is attempting to pull a fast one on us (even when it's so transparent.)

I think it's a valid reaction.

Disputing a charge on your credit card does not lock your credit card from use. You do not have to pay the charge on your credit card until the dispute is resolved but you do have to pay other charges on your card. The only time your card is locked from use as described above is if you report it lost or stolen.
#21 Jun 01 2004 at 6:19 PM Rating: Decent
nope, not so. once you despute a payment, that card is locked. you are still bound to pay what is legitamet, but you will not be able to purchase other items with that card until the dispute is over.

that is the standard rule from MC/Visa (yes its the same company) now as for Discover, or American Express, i could not tell you on those 2 as i never deal with them.

in fact the details of what happens is very simple:

1. customer complains.
2. CC company locks account, and stops payment on the disputed amount.
3. CC company then contacts the merchant (in this case SoE) with just a CC # and the month of the billing.
4. Merchant then has to serch their records and provide s SIGNED reciept with the porper invoice.

if step 4 can not be completed with a signed reciect then the merchant has no choice but to deal with a 'bill back' and pay the customer 100% of the amount in dispute.

if the merchant can provide a signed reciept with a legitamet invoice, then the merchant gets to keep the money and the customer is SoL.

that is unless the customer can prove that the item was returned under written policy, or the service was never provided.
