I either missed, or there haven't been any posts yet about the new Tutorial they gave us with the latest patch?

First of all, I'd like to say that it was a long download (20 minutes for me on ADSL) but well worth it. The tutorial is very well done IMO, and I can reccommend it to all new players. EQ hasn't had a tutorial ever since... way back (Velious I think, when they introduced the new UI and changed some other stuff which really made the original tutorial way out of date).

The first thing you probably want to do is create your character. As far as I can see nothing much has changed there, but I haven't been making any new characters in a long time, so can't say for sure. After the character has been created you end up in your own instance of a cave/mine. So no other players to confuse/interact/spam you. Also the user interface has been simplified immensely. You see your hitpoint window, chat window, target window, hotbank, and a tutorial guide window, that's pretty much all. Good thing too, it prevents people from getting too much information on their screen from the start and feeling a bit thrown in the deep. Guidance follows in the window and a narrator also speaks these explanations/instructions to you (EQ2 style anyone?). You get all the time in the world to familiarise yourself with the basics, such as hailing, opening inventory, getting a quest, killing a mob, looting and giving the item to the quest NPC. Straightforward and effective.

When you have done that, you get the choice whether you want to continue the tutorial or go straight to the game. I'd reccommend continuing to help freeing the slaves. A loading screen (seemingly same zone) occurs and you find yourself back in the mines but this time together with (all?) other people who are doing the tutorial at that time. The tutorial continues and you learn about how to form groups, about merchants and whatnot. Pity that the waterfall in that area is a tad too loud, overpowers the narrator's voice. You can go out and start killing, questing, get experience in that area, and you can even ding. (The character will transfer to the game after you stop the tutorial and you should keep all the exp and levels you have gained within the tutorial, so if you have no hurry going to the real world of Norrath you can hang out here for a bit longer). One of the best things in this part, IMO, is that all the newbies are together in the same zone. So if you WANT to group up, you have a better chance than being e.g. in the deserted Toxxulia Forest.

Concluding, I think this is again one of the GOOD things they have brought to the game, even if it's already a tad to late for many of the current players.

I tried the tutorial on the test server while I was patching yesterday. I had fun with a human ranger named Daisypusher.

One nice thing about the tutorial is you get a very nice charm out of it (+5 str/sta/wis/int +10 HP/mana) which is actually better than what I have on my 55 shaman right now.

You can work up to a 6/28 1HS weapon (no-drop but not lore) and some stitched burlap armor (about equal to cloth) while you are there too.

The drops in the dungeon are mostly quest pieces that you can turn in for weapons and armor but you can also get low level spell scrolls. In the time it took me to get to level 6 I picked up Leering Corpse, Root, and 2 copies of Burst of Flame. I gave them to players that could use them since the vendor prices weren't worth bothering with.

The only real drawback I could find was there are no class trainers so you have to wait till you leave to use any training points you may have gained.

They say it is usable up to level 5.

Someone last night was asking how you got into it at level 3. Is it accessible to already created characters? If so how?

I agree, very nice start. . . . .and a +5 charm slot item. . .that's like worth 200 LDoN wins isn't it :-)

Yup, that's a really great item to get practically for free (all you need to do for this is follow the quest chat and hail the NPCs to learn the game, not even kill mobs).

Pity I can't get one of these for my alts (who have very low LDoN points and don't even have to start thinking about getting PoP flags) as they are all 30+. They can't get a better item than this for a long long time. (Edit: in the charm slot, that is)

On the character select screen there is an option for the tutorial. If you select any character over level 5, the button will be not be pushable.

Turtorial is fun :) and quite worthwhile for any new toon (not just new players) if only for the charm.

One word of small warning though, if you start this with a character that was created before the tutorial (not sure if this happens if you just skip it..), you cannot get the full value of the charm without some fanagling.

There is one "Lesson" regarding bank usage, in which there are 2 items in your newly created toon's bank. These will not show on a previously created toon. This makes it so this lesson is not completable (have to remove the 2 items from the bank to finish it.) The 2 items are a backpack and a Golden Token.

Don't know if this was inteded or not.

Workaround:
Both items are droppable. (Normal backpack, I'm thinking the token is the "trigger" item). Create a brand new toon and go through the tutorial. When finished with part 1, go right to the banker and put the 2 items into the shared bank. When you log back into your other toon, grab the items and put them in the normal bank. You can then progress with the lesson.

Is this "supposed" to happen? /shrug. I did do a /feedback concerning it.

There are a couple other minor dialog bugs/errors that I saw as well. Pretty nitpicky stuff tho. Just one note: the silks the small spiders drop (forgot their name now...grottosomething...) are indeed "spiderling silks" for use in the quests.

Lastly. 25 newbies in one (small) zone would normally be chaos. However, the mobs a) are easier than normal newbie zone mobs, and b) have a roughly 30-45 second repop..and they are plentiful.

Enjoy :) it's a fun time really.

Yea wish you could take any charactor in there just for the charm. I had a problem with the bank tutorial. It gets to the part telling me to pick up something out of the bank, but the item they want me to get is not in there. That was the only part I couldn't get to work right.

Can you get the level 1 hybrid spells anywhere else besides the tutorial?

Sounds really close to the Asheron's Call 2 tutorial first zone.

Yeah I have chars with no charm and over level 5, what a rip!

Judt curious if anyone knows since I seem to have missed it: What good is the gold token you're given?

Excellent job on the Tutorial.

It was sorely needed and it looks like it will do the job very nicely.

Had to smile at meeting Absor and Rytan face to face. Didn't seem to be their usual gabby selves though. Smiley: smile

I keep wanting to ask Absor about class balance...maybe it's just me. Weapons just don't seem to fit him ;).

Not sure what the offical use of the token is. But you can sell it to merchant for around 1g and some change. This a nice boost for pet classes to either buy their first level pet, or grab a couple reagents for their pet.

As I previously mentioned, I think it is just the trigger item to signal the lesson completion. Much like selling the handcuffs, buying the kobold necklace, making the rat steaks (which you can do more than once ;)), and trading in your weapon.

I loved it. I had just started another BL this week and I rerolled, much to the relief of the people I've been chatting with.

Going back in later to finish up some of the quests for food and what not.

I also like this tutorial! I have to agree - waterfall sound is much to loud.

I love all the new weapons and 'goodies' you get - makes a wonderful addition - just the backpack alone is worth it! As a new player before this tutorial there was so much running around with loot - just to sell the few items so you could save for a new pack - cheapest I have found is 6 gold and some change - that is alot to a new character! Those extra slots are worth their weight in gold (pardon the pun - LOL).

Information is well defined and presented and easy to follow. You do have to read all the text as the first time I missed the Map NPC and the fact she would make a potient if you bring her some mushrooms!

I just tried it through on my new bard. The charm is very nice.

I have no idea about the waterfall since I have no sound.

I didn't notice people grouping much and it seemed to be mostly "old hands" doing it to test it out rather than real newbies.

It is very well implemented and long overdue. If I had one criticism it would be that it exacerbates the "post-newbie syndrome". When you have this much on a plate the game is going to feel really hard when you get outside and past level 10. However I suppose that would always be the case and somebody must be doing the sums and reckons that less people leave when it gets hard at 10 than used to leave when they found a steep learning curve from level 1.

Just a note to all about the loud waterfall.....go to your options and turn off the "environmental sounds" and then you can here the NPC's quite well....

I ran thru it this weekand, it was very nice. I recieved the charm, a full set of burlap, and my new iron sword. Some of the named kobalds also drop kobald leather armor pieces. I only recieved the belt, but better than burlap.

I also spent some time at the tradeskill NPC making Rat steaks (Hardy meal, +5hp) You can make all you want and it will get your baking skill to 15. I left with a backpack full.

You also can get a kobald leather mask from the swimming NPC. He dropped his sword in the water. Retrieve it and the mask is yours.

The last item I got was the shimmering potion of vigor (Lore item though, drat ) You get the mushrooms from behind the Buffing NPC and give one to the Maps NPC for the potion. One dose of vigor. Get one, use it, and hold on to the second for later.

All in all, well put together and it was actually fun.

One very accurate thing about the Tutorial was how it introduces new players to concepts like camp-stealing, KSing and the like.

The scenes around the Taskmaster or when a named kobold spawned were truly up to Crushbone or Paludal standards.

Yup, I heard some pretty good name calling, too. You'd think an entire 4th grade class was playing. Then again, they may have been.

there a few more things u can do. If u keep gloomingdeep silks u hand 3 in to the armor person and he gives u a random peice of gear. If u have 1 already u can sell for 8silver-3gold (depends on item).

If u kill kolbalds u get a brick of bronze, or if u kill slavemaster ruga u get chunk of iron hand these to weapon guy to get a very nice sword (espically when u are starting on a new server with nothing).

Man I was messing around in tutorial last night, and no less than 3 people OOC'd about how to get out and a few asked how to find the guy!

They don't even need to read! Just listen!!

I think the tutorial should be an IQ test, if you can't listen well enough to get out, you shouldn't EQ.

If someone invents an accurate 1 minute IQ test, I'm gonna put it in with the employment applications here at work. We sure could use a little boost in the average in this place. ::mutter::

This is a superb way to learn the controls, pick up some good xp, and some nice kit. The charm is very useful.

I like it !

I may even start some new characters just for fun.
