How do I use the rowboats found on islands in the ocean of tears?

Don't. they don't work properly and will leave you stranded.

If you must, then get into one and right click on the boat. You get a message "You have the helm, Captain". You get this even if your head slot is empty.

Assuming you were facing the front of the boat (always useful) you may then move it using the arrow keys.

However every time I've tried this they will not cross a zero coordinate. They get to it and then stick and I end up swimming the rest of the way. I haven't checked lately but I'm sure such a minor problem is way down their list of things to fix.

I'll try again and see perhaps. Not much time lost nowadays with gnomes instead of the big boats.

I could never really get the row boats to work either. I have wondered if it had to do with my stamina (this was before endurance was added). I thought rowing around all day in a row boat would be fun. It was not.

I agree with Cobra. Don't use them. Learn to swim instead.

A few pointers on swimming:
Get levitation. You'll be able to swim just under the surface of the water. This can be helpful if you don't have an air buff. I died once because I was so far under the surface that by the time I noticed how low on air I was, it was too late to swim topside.

Get dead man floating, eye of the leviathan, or enduring breath. This will keep you from needing to worry about your nifty little air bubble at all.

Your look up and look down keys are what determines how far under the water you are.

With DMF or levitate you are not really swimming. My favorite place to skill up in swimming is Halas. You get in a corner, hit your auto forward key, make sure you are up high enough to not have a breathing problem, then go AFK while you increase your skill.

I would swear that I've gotten skill ups with levitate on and swimming. I'll have to check it out just so I can repost this evening.

on the dock in stonebrunt mountains and in nedaria's landing just standing on the docks used to give you skill ups. They might not now but they used to give them just as fast as if you were swimming.
