The new front end for EQ has prevented use of EQW, the most common tool for running two instances of EQ on the same PC.

It also prevents running 2 instances of EQ reliably just in ordinary windows.

I have to wonder if this is pure accident or whether SoE have intentionally made it harder for people to run 2 instances. It is so much cheaper to have 2 instances running than a whole separate PC rig that I'm sure that it was a very common thing.

However it does encourage a certain insularity. I found it much easier to duo two of my characters rather than find a group. With two characters you can do an awful lot that you can't do with one. I was developing an entire playstyle around a set of duos.

Now I will have to either solo or group again. SoE have repeatedly said that they wish to promote grouping. I wonder if they have acted intentionally to change this dynamic.

Probably I'm just paranoid and it is another example of god-awful programming.

I think the latter. They spent a LOT of money rewriting stuff for the windowing/dx features. Also, I would suspect that they would support anything that caused us to buy multiple accounts. And the PoK mess supports your thought that it might be dirt lousy programming.

But I know exactly how you feel, with all the Z-axis weirdness and lock ups in PoK I have taken a sabbatical...it's a good time to get to know the wife again. :)

without a doubt its just bad coding on SoE side without proper testing.

things like that can be tested properly via the test server and need to be fixed before they go live. no excuses for this kind of cr4p

also hit the EQW site, they have a zip file that has the fix including a new eqmain.dll that should resolve the issue you are having with EQW and the new logger.

I'd assume they just made it how they felt like making it and don't get a drowned rat's *** if it works with your 3rd party programs or not. I doubt it was intentional -- they have said that EQW isn't a violation of the EULA and it's in their interests to allow people with two accounts to continue to play with two accounts rather than force them to decide between cancelling an account or dropping a grand+ on a new computer to dual box. Like I said, I think that "make sure this works with 3rd party programs" is really, really low on the priority list.

I just assume (like everything else in EQ) that is something to do with EQ2. I think we are testing a lot of the new coding for them.

EVERYONE -- the programming in EQ is not "god-awful". As I've stated before on these boards, I spent several years as a programmer in the gaming industry therefore I know a little bit about the subject. I suspect SoE is just doing their own thing as usual, trying to improve the game for all players. SoE doesn't like third party software programs like EQ Windows and for good reason, they create horrendous support issues. If your using a piece of third party software and EQ bombs, who's code is at fault? SoE or the third party vendor? I can tell you based on experience, 100% of the time it will not be creator of the game. SoE will write code that is compliant with EQ and they won't bother to notify anyone they're changing the front end. It will be up to the third party software people to change their code once the players who use the software start complaining it no longer works.

I'm sure the guys who wrote EQ Windows will eventually find a fix that works.

I am sorry but when I have three top end machines with a variety of video boards, with 2 different operating systems, and they all lock up in PoK, I tend to doubt the quality of the code and testing. When I see others reporting the exact same symptoms on still other good hardware/OS even different from mine, that tends to reinforce my humble conclusions about the quality of code and testing.

I might also suggest that flaunting one's programming credentials on a board like this might lead one only to grief, but then who's to say? :)

No EQW do not have a fix. Some guy has posted a link to their own site for you to download their modified version of the old login. Personally the opportunity for them to build in a keylogger is not something I'm prepared to risk.

I'll wait until there is a new download from EQW

thank god i have 2 low end machines cause i hardly ever have any problems and the few i do generally tend to go away rather quickly

In that case why does it not run with itself as it used to?

Before I started using EQW I used to run EQ in two instances and it ran. Switching was sometimes a little slow but it worked.

Now if I load a second copy of EQ (straight from the icon without EQW) it just vanishes on completion of load.

I am a programmer. The new front end has not been properly tested. And for a supposedly consumer-oriented organisation it's introduction was inept.

Have you tried the "Quick Connect"? It takes you to the Server select screen anyway and waits for you to hit the "Play button".

This kind of programming is not what you expect from a supposedly competent team of professionals. It is the sort of thing a 16-year old knocks up in VB.

I too have 3 high end machines a 3.2GHz with 2gb of ram, a 3.0Ghz with 1gb of ram and 2.4Ghz with 1gb of ram. Two have ATI Radeon vid cards 9800, 9700, and other has Geforce 6800. The 9700 (with the upgraded drivers) seems to have issues Direct 9X. I never had a problem with EQ till the 9X patch. Since the patch however, I can make a cup of coffee, have dinner, and walk the dog while waiting do a 360 degree turn in PoK. Is SoE to blame. Partially.

Microsoft (as everyone knows who has ever had to deal with their code) has horrible documentation. Trying to get various hardware drivers work with DirectX (any release) has always been worse than hammering a nail using just your finger. It's a freaking painful and bloody experience. Unfortunately, SoE is caught between the hardware companies and Uncle Billy's totalitarian operating system dictatorship.

I'm not making excuses for SoE... I still say the code is good. But, they should have waited to roll out the 9X patch until the driver issues were resolved.

When I realized EQW wasn't working I went to their web site and found the fix. Rather than use someone else's files I backed up eqhost.txt and eqmain.dll on my second machine, patched it, unzipped the backup and tried EQW there. Worked fine.

Copied the zip file to my first machine and unzipped it. No problems so far.

Just have to run EQW with the "run patch" box unchecked.

Unfortunately all my machines got patched before I thought about that.

However I have found that if I let one instance go all the way into EQ and then load the other while doing absolutely nothing (ie no browsing or tasking) it does eventually get in and I can play two windowed modes without EQW. If I need to swap chars though I have to log right back to desktop or the window minimises and won't come back.

EQWindows is pretty quick about making fixed versions anytime SOE does something that screws up the prior versions from working. It might take a day or two but it'll be out shortly after.

yes, i'd have to agree. i don't think SoE intentionally did this. i think, like all the other patches, this one has a few bugs that need to be worked out. several times in the past, EQWindows has had to develop a new version to take care of patch issues. it's only a matter of time before they fix it.

as for now, EQWindows.com has a temporary fix. all you need to do is download 2 of the old files and DO NOT perform a patch when you log on. simply copy "eqmain.dll" and "eqhost.txt" and paste them in place of the ones that were overwritten during the latest patch. my suggestion, keep extra copies of those 2 files elsewhere in your computer incase you accidentally run a patch and erase them.

also, be sure to run a virus scan on those zip files before opening them!!

hope this helps! Good Luck to all!

I multi box rather than try and play multipal sets on 1 machine. After the last patch with the new front end 1 of them after the server selection screen just goes black and locks up. This is on an Athlon XP1600+ processor with 1.5Gig ram and an FX5600 video board. As for those who do not think that it's the new code I uninstalled EQ(US) and loaded the european patcher front end. EQ now works again. Mind you I still have the other issues, PoK lock ups, instant disconnect on the machine with the modem, sudden slow down of graphics together with missing parts of body, Greyed out armour etc. etc.

I had this same issue on my amd system after the patch. I got a tip on our server board to try out the omega drivers for nvidia. Their newest set is based on nvidia 53.03 which is older than current drivers, and EQ will pop up a message saying they are old drivers. I just told it to continue anyway. All the black screen issues were resolved, and the lag in game was much better.
