As I have said in a couple of other posts - I am brand new to this game. I am enjoying it alot - but most of all I am sooo impressed with the help I have received here on this forum!! So First I want to thank you all! And if anyone that has been ingame with me I also want to thank for you help!

The interesting part I was talking about = How much I do NOT know and need to learn about this game! I will ask a question and get a super answer - but then that brings up 2 more questions - LOL.

I have or am playing other MMORPH games and can help in those - I offer assistance whenever I can - giving directions, help with questions on spells, weapons, armor or merchant(s) etc - and I "Just Know It" now - from playing and asking questions (or having been in Beta). It seems so easy to me now and then I come into this game and feel like a Complete nOOb in all aspects of gaming!!

What character to start with? What area is the easiest Town as a starter town. What critters aggro? How to use items in recipes? Where to put points and spend $$? And on and on it goes!

So far I have made three characters - my first is Paladin/Human female - in Freeland. Easy critters outside the gate to learn on!! Once I figured out the maze of Freeland - and the "find" function LOL

Second is a wood elf - Druid - I like her - but hate the "Tree" city! I can't tell you the amount of times I have fallen off the ramps and died! And the critters are much harder to level on as they are much higher level than in Freeland.

I just started a Barbarian Beastmaster - I am SOOO lost! I drowned because I didn't know that the 'dock' I was standing on was actually a 'barge' so ran off the edge and couldn't get back up to land! I have no idea how to get my pet? I have no idea where to hunt? I tried outside in some area (Don't remember what it is called) and as soon as I got there I was aggro-ed by 3 skells and an orc (I think as it all happened sooo fast. So I logged to see if I can find some maps/answers to that area (I really need critters more my level = 1 LOL).

So the point of this L O N G post is = learning curve and how some of us forget what it is like to be new. I hope I have helped in 'my' other games as much as you guys have helped me!

BIG thanks to you all!!!

Never mind drowning. Barbarians are always good swimmers from having to cross that lake.

The area outside Halas is called Everfrost Peaks. The mobs by the Halas exit are mostly low level and killable at level 1 but there are lots of them. Try and pull one off the main path to fight.

And you don't get a pet until level 9, sorry.

1) When swimming keep your head up (Pg Up) and you won't drown. Same goes for getting on land, Look WAY up and keep going forward, you'll eventually get out.

2) You get your first pet as a beastlord at level 9, it's a spell you have to buy.

3) At level 1 just fight things that have a white ring around them when you click on them, you should level pretty quickly to about 4.

4) You were in Everfrost Peaks if you left Halas, the ice goblins are probably what you want to fight at level 1, then mix in white wolves at 2. Take the necklaces and white wolve pelts back to ...I'll have to look his name up, and he'll give you some armour and exp. Great exp on the necklaces.

Wow - Cobra and Mulamen! Thank you both so much!

I am just going back ingame so will try all of the above! I think I will like her - the idea of the Beastmaster sounds so interesting!

I thought about using hand-to-hand?? Will that work? Or should I stick with the dagger (I think that is the weapon I got?)

Thanks again!

Beastlords are one of the martial classes - you should develop hand to hand and 1HB, but H2H should be your main concern.

For weapons, I would look in the bazaar for a Polished Steel Ulak. These can generally be found for around 20pp or less on my server, and are very nice weapons early on.

Beastlords are a very fun class to play, IMO, and do very well when soloing. Your warder gets a proc fairly early on that enables you to easily solo yellows and, if you're lucky, some low reds. The downside to the class is their armor restriction (leather).

Actually the white hides he is talking about drop off polar bear cubs, you give them to Cindl's in Halas (she is in Mac's Kilts I believe).

I would suggest going with both pierce and hand-to-hand, though I would suggest going hand-to-hand for now. Main reason I say this is that there are both good H2H (Hand to Hand) and Piercing weapons, but with H2H you are never without a weapon Smiley: grin.

Also speak with your trainer about the newbie quests for BST, that is some very nice gear for the lvl. If you find you are in need of cash, you have two options at your lvl.

1: Kill large rats in Misty Thicket/Freeport/Qeynos. The tails sell for 1 plat 8 gp (with really good charisma).

OR

2: While killing those polar bear cubs for the Polar-Bear skins, keep any of the "Quality" pelts to sell on the Bazaar. Normally I sell the High Quality pelts for 30+ plat, the Med for 10 plat, and the Low for 2 plat. This is on Morden Rasp, so I would do a /bazaar and check local prices for what would be best on your server.
Also, bazaar them spiderling silks. Many higher lvl people want them for Smithing and such (used to make silk, which is combined with a low quality skin for leather padding for armors).

Oh, and turning in the Polar Bear skins to Cindl nets you a few gold each and a random "Tattered Leather" armor piece. Which is equal to Patchwork for A/C.

Hope this helps some.

EDIT: If you look around you will find that those Polished Steel Ulak's if on a normal Vendor Merchant sell for approx 2 plat each. Just a heads up. /EDIT.

If you are not wearing twink gear, it is normal to die a whole lot until you hit level 3 in Everfrost Peaks. There are just so many little critters who attack it's pretty tough to avoid getting overwhelmed with adds a few times.

By the way, the human city is Freeport, not Freeland.

If you haven't yet, downloand all the available zone maps from Mapfiend.

Do be sure to check out the quest link (to the left) for lots of little newbie quests in the starting cities.

Glad you're having fun!

Fishing 101 (posted by one who has only fished twice in her whole life):

1. Buy fishing rod and bait.

2. Find water

3. Equip rod in your primary slot

4. Stand close to water and hit (under the actions menu) "fishing".

If I am wrong, I'm sure someone will be kind enough to correct my error Smiley: grin

Nope. That's a good description of fishing.

I'll add another bit, since it helps out with the swiming by an amazing amount. You can also use mouselook for turning in the game. What you do is put your mouse pointer anywhere on the screen that isn't a window of some sort, and hold down the right mouse button. While holding it down, your viewpoint will move as you move the mouse. This does not just change the way you are looking, it turns your character as well.

When swimming, mouselook will also control your up/down diretion. It's 10000X easier to swim if you learn how to use mouselook for controlling your character. Swiming in EQ, unlike many other games, really is a 3d experience. You can swim up, down, spiral around, and do anything you'd expect while swimming. All pageup does is make you look up while runing straight. If you want real control over where your character is facing, learn to use mouselook... :)

Um... I will add that mouselook only works in 1st person view (kinda obvious, but still need to point it out). However, for many things you don't need 3rd person when using it. Since you can control your movement with the arrow keys while controling your facing with the mouse, you can do some things you can't do using the keys alone (or not easily anyway). While using mouselook (holding the right buton), the right and left arrow keys change from rotating your facing, to "straffing". This means you can move sideways. Judicious use of the forward and side arrow buttons while using mouselook will allow you to do what's called a "strafe-run", where you are kinda looking to one side, while moving fowards and sideways at the same time. It takes a bit of practice, but you can actualy move faster by doing this, then you could just running straight ahead. It's not a lot faster, but it's enough of an increase that you can actually outrun mobs that would otherwise keep up with you can beat on you all the way to the zoneline. Knowing this trick at lower levels, will allow you to run away from just about any mob if you find yourself getting in over your head in an ourdoor zone (or just agro something while running through).

This effect is really dramatic if you play a rogue. The movement reduction that you get when sneaking only affects your forward/backwards movement axis. Strafing is just a fast. By angling yourself corectly, you can make it so that most of your "forward" movement is actually coming from the straffing, thus allowing you to move a hell of a lot faster while sneaking. You wont move faster then normal runing, but you wont move at quite the crawl that sneaking normally entails.

While I can't promise you'll enjoy your barbarian beastlord, I can unequivocally say that she is my favorite character to date. I've played several years and have played just about everything but paladins and bards, and I've never enjoyed a character as much as I do my beast.

Got tired of high levels though, patching through to make a new one on a new server now :)

I am happy to announce that my Beastmaster just turned 4! Not very hig by the majority of players here - but my highest level character to date. I did just get this game 2 days ago - lol.

I may enjoying her alot - I like the hand-to-hand with my claw(Brass knuckle?) and am able to kill everything in the area just outside the gate in the Peak area.

I am going to try a quest and fishing tomorrow.

Thank you all again for the helpful information!

almost complete. I would add
5 - finished with fishing? do not forget to re-equip your weapon... looks kindda stupid when you try to bash them mobs with a fishing pole in your hand Smiley: grin - yes, I did fight some mobs in Unrest with my pole equipped once... my group mates laughed so hard at me... Smiley: lol

In my opinion this is probably the most important step...

I can't tell you how many times I've sat on a beach medding and fishing and notice a blue mob on track, next thing I realize I'm out there whipping the mob with my fishing pole... doh. /bonk

I just got my beast lord to 6 today -- I had forgotten how many quests there were as a newbie in Halas -- and apparently more have been added since the newbie armor thing.

Be sure to check out Cindl in town (Mac's Kilts)
Lisbeth or whatever her name is in the Pit of Doom (warrior guild)
Hoyce at the Beast Lord Guild.
Walter Finnegan at the Shaman guild.

Lots of low level drops can be used in quests for nice rewards for the level.

Good luck :)

Just so. There were two things that absolutely thrilled me about this game when it was brand new.

1. Talking to the other people playing. I really had never played anything like this game. Avatars running around, talking, shouting, selling things to each other, fighting bats and skeletons. It was overwhelming.

2. Exploring. I still do it, just out of curiosity. The world is really pretty huge. Of course I tell myself I'm scoping out new hunting grounds for my lower level toons. Yeah! That's what I'm doing!

Congratulations on your progress. Smiley: smile

thank you thank you!

I am now the ripe ole age of 6! Only 3 more levels and I will get my pet wolf! I am so excited.

I have "baked" a few sandwichs - oh yum - Rat, bear and wolf (ohh poor thing). I have explored. I have met some awesome people. I have not fished as I can't seem to find the 'fish action' button. Maybe I need to be higher level?

So again - A Big Thanks to you all!!

On the actions page click one of the empty buttons. that will give you a list of actions you can have for that button. Choose one and you have your very own fishing button.

Greetings,

To get yourself fishing and provide an EQ-lifetime's worth of relaxation (depending on where you fish! Smiley: grin) you need to do a couple of things.

Locate your 'Actions' window - it's probably showing the list of options with 'Camp' and 'Run' in it. Click on the tab that looks like a gloved hand at the top of that window. If you've not been there before, you'll probably see 6 numbered boxes.

Right-click on a box, and a sub-screen will open with a list of choices in it - fishing should be one of those. Left-click on it and the box will now display 'Fishing' rather than the number. Left-click and hold on the Fishing box and then drag and drop it into an empty slot in your Hotbuttons window. Note that you have several banks of these, so if bank 1 is full, left click on the arrows either side of the number to get an empty set. You now have a fishing hotkey, operable by hitting the matching number on your keyboard.

Arm yourself with a fishing pole in your primary hand, bait in your inventory (or ammo slot) and fish away! Note that unlike real life, it won't let you fish if you're standing in the shallow water, and if you don't see a splash when you cast your line, you're not close enough to the water.

Soon, a fine collection of tattered sandals and rusty daggers (plus the odd fish or two) will be yours. Smiley: yippee

Hope this helps, and tight lines!

Haha, it's cool to see a true newbie so excited about the game ;)

Glad you like it, and enjoy the beastmaster, they're a fun class.

Once you hit level 9, you'll have a huge increase in power from having your pet.

Also, be sure you're using your kick skill! I think you get this at level 6, train just 1 point at your guildmaster then make a hotkey for it.

Also, once your enemies in Everfrost start to turn light blue (very little exp), try your hand at fighting the gnolls around Ermmmm...the gnoll place between Everfrost and Qeynos hills (I can't believe I don't recall the name!)

Make sure you bring a map (or follow the in-game map if you have it) and a torch though, since it can get dark and confusing for a new player.

#25 May 23 2004 at 2:31 AM Rating: Decent
Welcome to EQ Pam. In a few levels you will find yourself wandering outside of Halas/Everfrost. Being a Barb, make sure you keep your candle handy due to being blind at night. If you choose to visit the neighboring Blackburrow, the entrance from Everfrost is VERY VERY dark.

You have chosen a pretty good class to start with. Hybrids are good due to 9 levels of learning how to melee before having to worry about buying spells. Not only that, once you reach your mid 50s, your pet morphs into an incredible killing machine.

You may take some grief in the beginning, but try to find groups as soon as possible. Most players have experience with many classes and expect their groupmates to perform flawlessly even at lower levels these days. But what you learn from these people will prove to be invaluable as you get into the higher levels. Also, try to find some BL sites where you can get specific advice on your class. Even 5 year veterans can learn something new from these boards, so ask questions that you have and they should be more than capable of pointing you in the right direction.

Good Luck to you Pam,

Spraggon

Have moved Azzel to Shadoweavers Thick and going to try to get her to that magic number 9! I can't wait to try my hand at a pet and buffs! WeeeHaaa.....

You all are AWESOME!! Thank you all for the kind words and caring comments/help! I am overwelmed by the 'Brotherhood' (sorry gals - couldn't come up with a better word) of this community!!!
