Just a general question regarding factionFollow

#1 May 19 2004 at 2:14 PM Rating: Decent
I am KOS to guards now in HHP...I've killed about 100-200 orcs, but I am still in the "glowers" faction, instead of "threateningly". I've noticed that when I kill orcs now, it says..."your faction cannot get any worse" (with the orcs). Does this mean that killing orcs from this point on will not raise my faction with the HHP Guards? Just curious if I should move on to gnolls instead because killing 1 million orcs at this point won't do a thing for HHP Guards faction- I appreciate anyone's help on this- thanks!

If you're not seeing a message that says:
'Your standing with Whateverthename guards has improved'
Then you're not doing any good.
The goblins do have a + faction modifier for the guards I think, and if you turn in goblins ears (after you're not kos) it imporves faction as well.

"glowers dubiously" is not KOS. You will continue to receive positive faction to the highpass guards until you see a message saying "your faction can not get any better" (or something to that effect!). Both gnolls and orcs both give positive hits on your highpass factions, orcs also give kithicor faction while I believe gnolls give karana resident faction.

Your faction wont get worse with the orcs, it has bottomed out. This has nothing to do with your faction of the quards. That's a different faction altogether.

To combine what everyone has said...

When you kill the orcs you should see something like this (I know the faction names are wrong, but you get the idea):

Your faction with Orcs can not get any worse.
Your faction with HighPass guards has gotten better.
Your faction with Karana Residents can not get any better.

Line 1 - you have killed so many orcs and they hate you already, there is nothing else you can do to **** them off more.

Line 2 - you have killed a lot of orcs, the HighPass Guards would like for you to kill more and they will like you more if you do.

Line 3 - You have killed so many orcs that the Karana residents really really appreciate it, but your orc killing skill will not grant you any further praise beyond what you currently have.

Sorry Samatman, I meant to say "scowls at you, ready to attack"...ugh, my bad. That is KOS (I think, because they come out me quickly). Wayen, great post...that clears up everything...one final question, is this going to take about 1000 orc kills to move up enough to where I'm not KOS? Anyone had any experience with HHP guards on this? I probably slaughtered 200 orcs last night in about 3 hours and nothing changed on faction. I could have spent that time with a Kithicor lady friend at the Inn.

Turning in the orc and gnoll scalps to the guard captains will improve faction (provided you are not KOS to them and they pound the tar out of you when you get close). The scalps seem to be fairly rare drops so you will have to kill quite a few and turn in four at a time.

It is going to take a lot of kills before you see your faction move to "glowers dubiously". Save those scalps (both gnoll and orc). Once you are in the dubious range, your factions move much faster and you will find you are amiable in no time. Like Val said, once you are dubious or better hand in the scalps for additional factions. Scalp turn-ins result in only positive faction adjustments, adding to highpass faction as well as qeynos guards (corrupt) and freeport militia.

One other thing: there is a small cave just before the Highkeep Gates (orc side) with 4 bandits in it. You can kill them also for positive faction hits to highpass and others. Be aware, if you pull one, you get all 4 generally.

Getting non-kos highpass faction was a significant event in the old days when we needed to travel through there to cross Antonica. I remember it fondly :)

How much work it will take depends a lot on how bad it was to start.

I am working on Cabilis faction with my agnostic kitty shaman. It took 500 faction hits (that's 2000 bone chips) to get to dubious. Another 250 hits got me to apprehensive. Other races have it far worse since their starting faction is worse.

Faction has several components to it to determine how far you can take it. There are race, class, religion, and behavior factors involved. The only one of these factors that you can change is behavior. An agnostic Vah Shir Bard will have a far easier time gaining faction in a good city than an Iksar Necro who worships Cazic-Thule. Some combinations are so bad that they cannot be fixed and are still scowling even at their highest.

My 2cp since I have an Iksar Monk well-liked in Highpass.

I spent 3 or 4 days leveling from 23-25 killing Shraloks in HPH and in Kithicor (those named orcs in SW corner of Kith give HPH/HPK faction). I stayed out of the guards aggro range in HPH and zoned into Kith during the day.

Once I was dubious to the HPH guards, I snuck (just to be sure he would accept) behind Captain Ashlan? in the Kithicor end of High Pass. Turned in the two backpacks of Orc scalps I had collected (levels 8-16) in Crushbone. I can now bank/sell and walk the streets in HPH and HPK without fear from the residents/guards.

It takes time, but once you get that first dubious con, it is worth it!

Then check your Freeport Militia faction. You may also be dubious there, after many more scalp turn-ins.
