Some Really Really Noob questionsFollow

I just installed this game - EverQuest: Evolution (as suggested by some really nice people!

I chose to start with a female Human Paladin (because of the fighting and healing combo). I felt that this was a good "all-around-get-to-know-the-game" combo. Is it??

No order to the questions....

#1 Okay - I can see what merchants have and what items are in my inventory (and sell and buy etc) But = Can you get stats on items = Like what the quality or 'level' armor or swords etc is?? I looked in the manual and ingame help section and can find Nothing on this.

#2 How do you know what to save from loot - for making 'recipes'? And where are these recipes? And if there are no "stats (question #1 above) how do you know if you can use an item? Again - how do I know what a concoction does? What qualities it might add to me or others?

#3 I gained a level - now what do I do? I tried to find the paladin trainer again and (well I didn't pay attention when I left that area LOL)can't find him again. Do I only get to distribute the points? or can I get 'spells' from them as well. Or 'specials' - like slash or double hit etc.

I read the post(s) on noob questions and they are more advanced than I am - ROFL! And before I can use any of the tips I need to get a little more info about the basics.

I tried to do a search and had no clue how to ask these questions.

Thanks in advance for any and all information you may be able to add to my knowledge!

1. Right click on the item to bring up a text box with details on the item.

2. The item will have: This is a Tradeskill item in its description if it is used someone in tradeskill recipes. Go to http://www.eqtraders.com for full details on tradeskills and recipes.

3. Skills are learned by visiting a guildmaster for your particluar class and spending the points you earn with each level. You really only need to put 1 point in and the skills, as you use them, will automatically go up. Some of the skills you have to be a certain level to start using. Special moves are the skills, like Kick or Bash. Spells you will have to buy and scribe into your spellbook. As a paladin you will not have access to any spells until you reach level 9.

enjoy

I see this suggested all the time and it doesn't work for me!
However, alt + left click does!

To get back to your GM, try the *find* button located in the panel (that started out) on the right hand side of the screen. Click find and a box will pop up with a list of everyone in the zone that you can interact with. Choose your GM and *A Golden Path* will appear to lead you there.

BTW - which server are you on? If it's Morden Rasp, (where I live), there are lots of other noobies there and we would be happy to give you a hand ingame.

oldblue.. you just don't right click, but right click and hold it down... maybe that would work for you....
#5 May 18 2004 at 7:17 PM Rating: Decent
Correct, right-clicking works on merchant goods, but for your own inventory you have to hold the button down.
If that still doesn't work for you old blue, I'll have to check, there may be a way to map your mouse...not too sure though.

Thank you thank you!

I did figure out about the right-clicking on inventory - I was Not holding it down long enough!

I started this character on Povar (sp?) as this was the easiest for me to remember - LOL.

OldBlue - thank you for the offer! If I make a new character to try - explore different race/profession - I will remember that! And the "find" tip is going to be of great help!

Delzore - thanks for the link!

While ingame tonight I was "mentored" by a wonderful level 65 character! Drrake was awesome - very patient answering my questions and showing me around! He needs a Big Gold Star!!!!

I am thrilled to find such helpful people ingame and on this board! It is such a warm feeling to know that I am not getting 'flammed' for asking questions - but getting very informative replies!

So thank you all again sooo much!

Questions have been answered well, I don't have anything to add to that. What I did want to mention, however, that there are also good offline maps of zones, with a legend of what type of merchant/guildmaster to find where in town.

Nowadays there are the 'ingame maps', which are already a great way of navigating (but sometimes a little bit hard to read, depending on which town you're in). You can open this map by pressing 'backspace'.

A good website for maps of the towns (and zones) around Norrath is www.eqatlas.com

Good luck

A paladin isn't too bad as a first character. You might have been better served making a traditional soloing class such as a druid or necromancer(It helps while you're learning the basics of the game not to have rely entirely on groups for hunting, as they can sometimes be sporadic), but if you like the toe to toe fighting aspects, a paladin is a good way to learn it.Smiley: smile

Now that you know how to bring up the information box on an item, if you look at that box and there is a line that says something to the effect of "This item can be used in tradeskills" then it can be used in the recipes they're talking about in the other thread.

As a general rule you shouldn't worry yet about working on your tradeskills. A far more important goal is getting yourself some armor and equipment. So sell those items you get and put the money in the bank, it will come in handy later.

Try hailing different NPC's at your starting guild and responding to what they tell you to find out what quests you can do. you might be able to get some armor items from that.

One important point that I'm sure you've found out by now is always, ALWAYS keep track of where you're going, and how to get back to important areas.Smiley: grin Everquest is a big world, and it can be easy to get lost in it when you're still new.

There is a command that if you learn it early can do you a world of good. If you type /loc in the game it will give you a set of coordinates. Write down the coordinates for any spot you might want to return to later, that way when you head back there you can use the coordinates to locate the spot.

The way coordinates in the game works is when you type /loc you're given a set of three numbers. Something like 234, 125, 21. It works just like the coordinates on any map. The first number corresponds to your north-south location on the map, with a positive number being north, a negative number being south. The second number refers to your east-west orientation(east being positive, west negative), and the final number is the elevation(remember, it's a three dimensional game you're playing).

Write down on a scrap piece of paper that you have handy(and always have a scrap piece of paper handy when playing the game, it is an invaluable toolSmiley: smile) the location for your trainer, any spell vendors that sell your spells, merchants that might have something you need(food, water, bandages ect.). That way if you need to track them down and can't remember how to get to them, you can use /loc to pinpoint where they are.

And good luck with everquest, it's a fun game and you'll probably enjoy it.Smiley: grin

Find out from someone near your Guild Master the items you will need for the low level quests for armor. Gather the items and create this armor. Should last you till 20's when you might be able to afford better.

The only thing you should worry about keeping now are low, medium and high quality pelts as well as spider spiderling silks.

Right clicking on an item (Most Setups) will identify if an item can be used in tradeskills.

Everything else I suggest selling to vendor. Go after the rats in Qeynos, the tails are a high return item.

Get to level 15, then do the LDoN starting quests to get your adventure stone and head to Abysmal Sea, and do the various tradeskill excercises. This will get your skills to the 50's for the tradeskills you may be interested in.

Remember it is not a race, enjoy the game for what it is, a game. Have fun!

Thanks again for the replies!

I am in Freeland(??) and when you leave the city/fort you go through a maze of walls that all look the same! Finding the right area for my trainer was - well - a maze LOL.

Monje makes a valid suggestion there. Doing the 'newbie armor quests' are a great way to get into the game, and get a bit of decent gear (for your level) as well. If you have to buy your gear from merchants or players you are probably paying way too much, and cash doesn't really start coming in that well till you're about level 20. With smithing you *can* make a bit of your own armor but it does take cash and extra effort to really make something useful. Via the abysmal sea tradeskill quests (on the ship town) you can indeed get a decent boost in your skill without spending any money.

Tradeskills are not for everyone, however. Some people love it to bits, others hate it. Good to know is that it's not something that will make or break the game if you choose not to do it.

So... the newbie quest is one I deffinitely can reccomend. The quest is different for each race/class/town. You said you are a human paladin. This means you either have started in the town Qeynos, or the town Freeport.

If you want to look up on more details about this quest (whom to hail, what to collect, and what to exactly do with it) you can check out these links (depending on which town is your start town):

Click here if you are from Freeport
Click here if you are from Qeynos

Edit: hehe, you wrote the former post while I was typing this one. So you're from Freeport. Then you click the top link here for something that will be nice starting fun. Actually, I think, killing stuff for a purpose (and reward) is better than randomly killing 'just because'. Good luck :)

My first character is a necro and it's working out very well. I'm level 23 and still soloing with no problems.

For instance, last night I was over at the Lake of Ill Omen (working from 22 to 23) and I just had to know about those goblins up there in the houses. So I tried to pull one. I got two. I was aggro kiting one and feared the other to make life easier for my pet. The snare wore off and the gobbie brought back friends. Like 4 of em. Not only did I live (Feign Death is quite handy), but I decided that maybe it was worth another try. I failed to carry the day (again), but I lived through the failure again. I wasn't even cussing; life is that managable as a necro.

The single best tip I can give you is to pay the little extra for Allakhazam's premium and use this site (and others) extensively. This place is a gold mine of knowledge. I get maps, quests, item values, all sorts of things here. Above all, I get good advice from the veterans.

Unless the OP bought the gates of discord expansion(I'm assuming they didn't because nothing about purchased expansions was mentioned in the post), he/she can't get to the abysmal sea.

i didnt read your post, i was disgusted by the title, newb is not an adjective, it is a noun, why not try newb-like? That would work. (see that there? thats constructive critisism)

Ah another human paladin...you made my heart widly flutter! Welcome to EQ and welcome to the holy order of knights. From you postings I believe you started your character out in Freeport? Human paladins normally start in one of two places: Freeport or Qeynos.

The first thing you probably will really want to do is to get a full understanding of your home city and the surrounding areas. The EQ Atlas website has some really nice maps that you will want to physically print. It's nice having a paper map of the city and surrounding areas as you initially wander your way through.

Useful Maps:
East Antonica Zone connection map
North Freeport Map
West Freeport Map
East Freeport Map
East Commonlands Map
Northern Desert of Ro Map

Both the cleric guild (Temple of Marr) and paladin guilds(Hall of Truth) are located in North Freeport. The paladin trainers can be found on the second floor of the Hall of Truth. There are some paladin trainers as well in the Temple of Marr, but they are more spread throughout the temple. The head guildmasters that you need to hail for the newbie armor quests are on the second floor of the Hall of Truth. Once you enter the hall there is a door immidiately to your right that will take you up a flight of stairs to the second floor.

Some misc items to know about Freeport: The bank is in North Freeport along with a fletching store, blacksmithing store, jewelry crafting store, and bards guild. In West Freeport you have access to the West Gate that will eventually take you out into a newbie hunting area and the East Commonlands. In West Freeport there is a bakery, pottery store, warriors guild, arena, monks guild (ashen order), magician/enchanter/wizards guild, and basic alchemy store. In South Freeport you have the docks that lead you to ships (that you can take to reach other zones on the continent), and South Gate that takes you to a slightly harder newbie zone that eventually leads to the Northern Desert of Ro. In South Freeport you have an armoury/weapons shop, leather goods shop, brewery & alchohol shop, rogues guild, shadowknights guild, and pawn shop that sells rusty weapons.

As a new person completely starting out you will most likely want to hunt just outside of West Gate from about levels 1-4. Once you reach level 4 hunt outside South Gate killing deathfist pawns till about level 5. Once you hit level five head over to the newbie section of the Northern Desert of Ro (this will be the grassy area by the Inn). There are three guards here that will help you out if you run into trouble and there is an Inn that you can sell drops and purchase goods. You can hunt all of the spiders, scarabs, armadillos, and cats till about level 8 or 9. Once you've hit this level you can either venture further out into the sandy areas of the desert or hunt cats, bears, and orcs in the East Commonlands.

One last piece of information: if you have the Planes of Power expansion the Plane of Knowledge book is hidden inside a secret alcove on the far left wall outside of West Gate. This invisible wall area also takes you into the secret tunnel section of Freeport.

You're in Freeport and just as lost as I was when I first wandered around. You need to get the downloadable maps. I got mine at

http://www.undergroundguides.com/freeeqinfo.htm

and they're decent. I won't comment on the rest of the site, only that the map file was a good one.

Welcome to EQ, I think you made a good choice of pally as first character (mine was a dwf pally). Pallys are a good choice since you start off as a tank fighting and then add some spells starting at level 9, so you will get a feel for both.

A couple of suggestions - you have Lay Hands which will automatically fully heal you once per EQ day, this is a wonderful Pally feature and should be set up on the same attack section as bash (which you will eventually get) and auto attack since you dont want to be clicking around if you are about to die. LH allows you to fight tough mobs early on since you can end up healing all damage when you get low (giving you almost double the HP).

Also, as mentioned, learn to use the LOC when you get low on HPs, after reaching level 10 or so you will need to go back to your corpse to retrieve your equipment if you die. Get in the habit now and save yourself some grief (also look for landmarks nearby as an aid).

Start doing the newbie armor quests, they yield good armor at your level and also are good practice.

Once you get a little higher up (8 plus) you may want to also consider coming to butcherblock for goblins and skelatons, Greater Faydark for orc pawns and orc cents, and then later Crushbone for Orc Legionaires, freeing slaves, etc - these orcs drop CB belts and shoulderpads that can be turned in at the dwf warrior guild for armor and exp as part of an excellent quest.

Pallys are fun to play and you get a real feel for tanking and casting sides all in one.

GOOD HUNTING

In the small window that has the sit/stand, camp, etc commands, there is a tab that says "Find".

Try presssing that when you are in Freeport and it will drop down a list of all the NPCs that are of use to you.

You will see your guild master listed, highlight him and click find and you will get a "magic pathway" that will show you the direct to follow.

Once you have done this a few times you will get to know the place like the back of your hand.

Don't beat youeself up about getting lost in Freeport. I started out in that town many moons ago - and I still occassionally get lost there. A hint on how to find the hidden opening to find the PoK stone. Go out the gate to the newbie are of East Freeport, turn left and run don the wall to the end of the wall, turn right and you will see a group of 3 cactii(?), go to those and turn right and if you lined up right you can run right through the wall. Short distance down teh tunnel you will see what looks like a podium with a large book on it. Click on this book and you will be ported into the Plane of Knowledge (PoK). You can then take other books into the other major areas of the world of Norrath. This has made it tremendously easier to get around in the game. Right now though, you don't want to sit and spend too much time in there because there is a glitch - that Sony is working on - that will cause your system to lock up. If that happens you will probably have to reboot you computer and log back in.

Have fun and be safe - and welcome to the wonderful world of Norrath
