Smithing question.......Follow

What is the best race to use for smithing? Due to the massive cost of raising up a master smithy, I would like to get your input on which race is the best/most profitable when it comes to the higher end cultural armor production.

Smithing skill depends on one of these three stats. Str, Intel, or wisdom. Pick a race with high stats in one of these. Str gear is relatively cheap and str buffs easy to get. Jonwin a human paladin always used high str items and buffs. For my baking it was wisdom items.
I know in the past a lot of folks crated a high elf for tradeskill purposes as they had high intell and chr. Erudinites can be useful for their high intell. What do you want to make as a smith? Then create your toon accordingly.

Look around at eqtraders to see the demand for various cultural armors. I think the demand for them is lesser now that planar and ornate armor is its equal or better.

One other thing to remember is to see what your server's economy is. It may not be to your best interest, if you are trying to make pps, to take the easiest route. If you choose High Elf, Erudite or even Dwarf (for STR), you may find that your server has plenty of GM smiths who can make the cultural for those races. My choice for next toon I want to take to GM in smithing would be either Ogre, Barb or Dark Elf. There seems to be a bit of shortage of these GMs on my server. Just a thought.

One warning: In general, it's not a good bet in EQ to decide to trade skill just to make money. There are several warnings about this on EQTraders. EQ is not a tradeskill-based economy, and with the addition of the 188 to 227 skillup combines and user-friendly TS interface, the number of trade-skilling fools is proliferating madly.

To me on Lanys T'Vyl, it appears that the number of GM dwarven smiths has increased notably in the last 5 months - I now see at least 6-7 different vendors actively selling Dorf cultural, where in the past there were perhaps 2-3 of us offering pieces occasionally.

Any race can GM smithing, so find one that you like to play. If you're looking only to make a toon to smith with, then you may want to find one what has high CHA and INT.

If you're wanting to do cultural armors then you can check out the bazaar on your server or an OoC in PoK for a GM smith should give you a good idea of who is making or can make the armor.

I've been working on smithing and selling off my shadowscream stuff almost faster than I can make it. There's also been no planar or cult armor for sale in the bazaar for the last 2 weeks, so I'm getting ready to make my first batch of Night Terror armor.

Edit: Anyone want to proofread for me? I can't seem to get it right the first time.

The caveat to cultural that Malkindred brings up is that planar drops make reasonable smithed armors, too. I make Farwater plate/chain, for instance, but all of it ends up going to guildies/friends, since they were the ones that helped get the componants. The componants do sell in the Lanys Bazaar, but the cost ends up being about 55K for armor that sells for 100-120K with the standard 335 trivial score - not really worth it, IMO.

In general I agree with you. However, the blue diamond cultural seems to be the exception, at least on my server. Even with plenty of High Elf and Dwarf GM smiths, due to BD shortage, the cultural always seem to sell well. That's the reason for my post. I can say with certainty that some of the less popular cultural armors, such as ogre or dark elf, would sell well since there seems to be a more demands for these on my server. While it is expensive to GM smithing, if you want to recoup some of the losses, cultural seems to be the way to do.

One point to think about is an Ogre Shaman can max STR faster than ony other character can max their main tradeskill attribute. Too many players looking into smithing forget to include buffs when looking at stats and automatically select warrior or shadowknight.

Ogres start higher and shaman can buff STR better than any other. Shaman can also solo well and thus are easy to level up without two boxing or getting power-leveled.

Shaman can also do their own imbues for their cultural armor eliminating another roadblock of finding a priest with the correct deity that bothered to learn his imbue spell.

As was mentioned earier though. Don't go into tradeskills for the money, it's just not there. If you want to get rich make a necro and farm tradeskill supplies and sell them to the idiots who actually like to tradeskill (like me).
