DAOC has their Camelot Herald website and on it you can type a friend's character name and select their server. The Herald then will tell you the last time he/she was logged in (or if the time returned was exactly at this moment, it meant he/she was playing right now).
Being back to EQ after my DAOC stint (about 2 years gone missing), do we have anything like this we can utilize?

There's EQIM, you can use it to see if your friend is online, but you have to know which server they play on.
no sadly there is nothing like the site you mentioned for EQ
