A couple of questions for a young necroFollow

#1 May 15 2004 at 3:01 AM Rating: Decent
1. What would be the best tradeskill to develop for a Necro?
2. How should I spend my skill points I receive every level up?
3. If I wanted to sell in the Bazaar do I have to stay logged on or can I set up shop than log off?

Any help or suggestions will be much apreciated. thnx

1. Tradeskills are a plat sink for the main part, but you will need to level research if you don't want to buy your high end 50-60 spells, if this is your first char and your short on pp stay away from tradeskills.

2. Put 1 point into each new ability you get and then when you ding your next level look to see if any casting skills are lagging behind and put the points into them.

3. You do need to stay logged on but you can just leave it on and go to bed, there is no need to sit at the keyboard it is all automatic.

Whether you are earning skill ups (from continuous combines) or paying to train in tradeskills, TS'ing is a plat sink. However, if you only need a certain amount for something, like a high enough Baking to make yourself some food, then an easy way to bypass skilling up like that is to wait until your level equals the trivial level of the item to buy the tradeskill from your GM. Newly bought skills start at whatever your level is when you buy it (that or +/- 1).

For example, one of my toons makes Mammoth Sandwiches for all of my other toons. When he reached 31 (which is the trivial skill level required to not mess up the combine [that's what trivial is, right?]), he bought Baking and it started at a 31 (IIRC). I make these mainly because 1 Loaf of Bread plus 1 Mammoth Meat makes 5 Sandwiches.

Side Note: Your toon's level doesn't have to equal the level of the recipe trivial. Just realized that sounded kinda confusing.

If you were thinking of making money from tradeskills then tarv is right. If you just wanted to have some fun with them then you are better off choosing one of the cheaper ones like brewing or baking. However beware of your low charisma which will make for high prices from merchants and low prices selling to them. As soon as you can invest in a couple of Opal Encrusted Steins to boost CHA when dealing with NPC merchants.

Use skill points to trigger skills that have a level beside them. Apart from that save them. You can practise casting skills so easily that using skill training points on them is a waste. However when you get to requiring Research you will find that it can be trained up using the points you have saved. That is an enormous saving.

After each level you should practice all your different skill types. Go to pok and cast a pet and just continuosly cast on him. He will not attack or die. Then when you are 16 and above if you want to put the points into research go ahead. Research costs and can be time consuming, spells casting is free if you have the spells already :) . I will say Evocation is a pain in my behind. I let that get behind. So practice your Evo spells definitely.

As for a tradeskill, there really is no specific one a necro should choose. Anyone you want really. But yes thet all will cost you. Baking if you can get the ingredients would probably be the easiest and cheapest. Fletching is pretty darn easy too, but the plat curve will hurt a young player. Pottery is fairly easy to, but can be a bit costly. But do not overlook them. Keep your hides for tailoring or for selling in the bazaar. Your different meats can sometimes be cheap to skill up with. For example. I was doing faction work and collected 8 stacks of Kobold meat in warrens and no baking skill at all. I made Kobold steaks and got to baking 41 or 42.(do not remember where it triv'd) So all in all, when you are young, do not worry so much about them, but keep an eye on them because sometimes you still could easily be skilling them up here and there.

Any skill that is 0 when you go to spend the points, look at it carefully. Is it a skill you will personally want to get higher. If so 1 point is all that is needed most of the time as that gets you over the hump and the skill ups from use will then come more quickly.

Actually PJ, with tradeskills, when you put a point into it, it starts at level 1 no matter your current character level. Also to note, you can only raise a tradeskill to level 21 through training points...

Some other skills (like spell specialization) do start at your current level plus one when you put training points into them...

Personally I think as a Necro your trade skill should be research. Starting at level 16 some spells are research only then they progress to research/npc drops (drops are well above your level and hard to obtain). Unless you can put your hands on plenty of plat spells get very expensive at high levels. I know I combine and sell them. Ex. Any spell with the word of Abrogation is going to run around 4k or up due to the rare drop or harder to access words. Words of awareness are never available so spells with this word in them can be 8k and up.

Research starts at a higher level as soon as you can start it sink all your training into it. By this point you have trained in all the other areas at least once so the points are available. When you reach about a 140 skill you should start combining spells to skill up. Purchasing a Geeklock Quil will allow you a +5% modification boost. Once you are around 195 skill level you will be able to make you spells up to level 60 on a very consistant rate. This will also give you a way to make plat. Combining for plat or selling spells is very profitable. I have spent right around 10k to bring my skill up to where it needs to be. I have probably made around 20k selling spells. So as you can see over time you get what you put into it back at least twice.

If there were another tradeskill I would select it would be tailoring just to the point that you can make Rallic Paks. RP are weight reduction bags that sell for 800p. This is a great way to make some much needed plat at early levels. The skill for RP is not high so may well carry you until the research can kick in.

Not only do you need to stay logged on all the time for your trader to work you will need to reset him periodically so he is in the most recent search. Simple turn him off and back on occasionally does the trick and honestly it is best to have a seperate toon for a trader. The switching bags and space in your bank will end up being a frustration.

Necro's are given a piercing weapon when they start out. But you most likely will end up using a one hand blunt. I highly suggest switching to a 1h blunt early and not time sink all your hard earned skills into piercing. This of course is my own opinion.

I am sure we all have many ideas, these just have worked for me.
