Hey all I think that EQ veterans should aid the newbies we get on the game all the time. Post what you think are useful newbie tips through level 15.

Tip:
Make Edible Goos for baking early. Baking skill is extremely useful for you once you get into raids and dungeoneering. You wouldn't want to have to leave the raid or the dungeon just because you wanted food, do you?

Recipe Info:
1 Fire Beetle Eye
1 Rat Ear

These can be gathered in respective newbie gardens from fire beetles and large rats.

P.S. If you see a mistake just say it and then the true thing. Do not flame. We are human after all Smiley: smile

Now that is a good tip. I'm going to do that.

Not that I qualify as a veteran, but...here's my contribution:

Save your bone chips and spiderling silks to be sold in the bazaar. You can get far more from other players than you will from the vendors. The extra cash will mean that you can afford better gear, etc. earlier.

Tip 2:
Another skill that is equally useful for late life is Brewing another newb recipe is this:

1 Snake Scales
1 Bottle (storebought for like 6cp)

This isn't as helpful, however, because there is currently no portable brewing device. However, it will save you money in the long run.

Surprised more people haven't posted...but oh well here's another:

Here's a quest that gives mucho exp and faction ratings:

Go to greater faydark at about level 5 and kill orcs till you get like 20 Crushbone Belts. Then go to Kaladim and find Canloe Nusback in the Warrior guild. Turn them in 4 at a time and you should bump up a level! Easy quest for good rewards.

Not to mention that the Orc Scalps that people leave on the corpses are worth half a plat and exp when you do the hand in. I'll leave it to people to figure out where.

And here is a less positive but equally helpful tip

Talk to people before you invite them to group!

Chucking invites at total strangers is rude and labels you as a newbie. At least find out what level they are (/whotarget) and talk to them. They might want to group, they might just be passing through.

3rd tip:

The *best* item to get for all new players...and even for veterans this is a good item.

PLAUGE RAT TAILS!

Despite the name, Plauge Rat Tails can be found on any rat, including the large rat found in almost all newbie zones.

PRT's sell for 1.7 PLAT and are fairly common. You can get maybe ten of these in twenty minutes of killing an average of 2 rats per minute sometimes more.
Undoubtedly the best newbie item!

Tip: Start your bazaar mule as soon as you can, thus doubling you storage space. Put all points into charisma-choose a race/class combo so you can get at least 100 points to start, later you can buy a 20pp stein to raise it another 25 points. Get someone to bind him to the bazaar, so if he trips over his feet and dies, he stays in bazaar. Trader bags are about 1.5pp each, or less, but VERY heavy. Pass him all your high, medium, low quality pelts, spider and spiderling silk, bone chips, and tradeskill items.

There are two shared slots in the bank, that can hold bags, making up to 20 spaces of items to feed your trader.

Roger that on the bazarre mule - other tip with using it to sell (you can never have enough money) is ALWAYS check prices in bazarre before you buy! If you are looking at spending some sig money, pop in and out of the bazarre on a daily basis, several times if possible, and use the ALT-a function to scan prices of items you are thinking about.

Some items can be priced over a wide range, you will learn exactly what you can get for how much if you are patient. works even better if you figure what you are going to get 'later', someday when you have lots of money. Keep an eye on those ones.

I had just gotten to 5k plat and clicked a link in PoK, someone wanting to sell a Sword of Skyfire. Saw the proc of three waves of 56 fire damage, HAD to have it - knew nothing of processes, had never had an item with any effect.

Payed 3000 plat. Pure uninformed impulse buy.

About 120 seconds later. I am looking in the bazarre where three are on sale, one for 3500, one for 2500, and one for...

200 plat.

Hmm... I wouldn't know about that Bazaar mule thing but I think I have another useful tidbit of information Smiley: grin.

Today's new recipe IS:

Metal Bits

2 Small PIECES of Ore
1 Water Flask

This is good until skill level 18 and is a smithing recipe. Metal Bits are the most commonly used smithing ingredient (besides Water flasks) so this will definetely come in handy. Also, make sure to get PIECES of ore instead of BRICKS. The pieces are the less expensive one. Another useful smithing recipe is:

Tarnished _____

1 Sharpening Stone
1 Tarnished (weapon)

You can buy sharpening stones for 3 copper. Tarnished weapons are got off of decaying skeletons. Tarnished weapons are slightly better than rusty weapons because of lower delay. Any rusty weapons can be used for this, but each has a different trivial rating than each other. They are combined in a Forge.
#12 May 14 2004 at 4:01 AM Rating: Decent
ok on the trade skill side, fish rolls

1 batwing
1 fresh fish

combine in a spit

both batwings and fresh fish can be bought for like a few silver from merchants in pok and bazaar and some other places, they trivial at 135 and you can get that high with around 50pp. fish rolls last a lot longer than vendor bought food too.

spiderling silks sell for insane prices lately, you can get lots of these at about lvl 5+ very easily in feerott, they drop of both spiderlings and spiders (these sell for anywhere between 10 and 30pp on drinal.

Arrgh thats what I was gonna say Smiley: grin. But here's a good one.

Level up to level 12 in Blackburrow or Crushbone. Come back at a higher level to mop up the high level 'boss' monsters in those respective zones for their items. These include Gnoll Commanders, Splitpaw Gnoll Commanders, Emperor Crush, and Ambassador D'Vinn.

Time I wrote another:

For caster types:

This has been mentioned in several earlier posts as a source of good cash, but no one has posted the recipe. I'm here to change that.

SILK THREAD

2 Spiderling Silk (unstacked)

Another staple recipe. This is THE staple item for tailoring, so you'd do well to memorize it.

SHADE SILK THREAD

2 Shadeling Silk (unstacked)

For you Vah Shir. Its used less than the Silk thread but still as useful recipe to know. It can be used to make the Shade series of armor.

Actually this can be significantly less than useful.

Make sure you check out prices before you do this. On MR at the moment Spiderling Silk sells for 5pp, Silk thread for 8pp. Net loss 2pp for doing the combine.

And Silk Thread is not "THE Staple item for tailoring". It is used to make Leather Padding. This is another potential loss-maker if the prices aren't right. On MR you have people selling it for 15pp - less than the cost of the parts. On another server I play it sells for 50pp and gets a nice profit. Study your market first

Apart from that most of the recipes using Silk Thread are for Fishing Smiley: smile.

On Quellious, that market I know the most about, I regularly sell spider silk for 9pp (usually the lowest in the bazaar) and spiderling silk for about 5-6pp. The threads sell for much less than that last time I looked.
#17 May 14 2004 at 11:02 AM Rating: Decent
As far as fish rolls are concerned, if you're a lowbie you shouldn't need to actually buy the ingredients. Just save the wings from all the bats you killed at levels 1-3 and spend some of your down time fishing. The trivial on fish rolls is rather high as well (135?), so it might be a while before you successfully make your first one and even longer before you can start making them reliably.

If your leveling for plat and exp I would suggest if possible that you go to Misty Thicket <halfling homezone> for L1-7, or L1-13. At L8 go to West Karana till L11. North Karana to L15/16, then to East Karana till L20. Then mix Everfrost Peaks/South Karana/East Karana till L33.

Get yourself a trader satchel in the bazaar with your first 1.5pp earned. SAVE all spiderling/spider silks, SAVE all furs/pelts except the ruined ones. Save all bazaar sellables then you will have 7kpp+ by L33.

If your a Ranger, or Druid, and or doing tradeskills, your plat will vary depending on your tradeskilling costs. Foragers can make even more money getting tea leaves/plains peebles/diff. eggs etc. as well.

That is my newbie plat making tip<s> for a first, or second run character. EQ time played 1 day to 2 months+.

Those would work for a druid/ranger but those zones are mostly deserted so not much use to a group-dependent character such as a cleric/rogue.

Also Misty Thicket is a complete nightmare with roving KSing guards. I'm sure that there are people who like it but they are probably halflings.

As a general rule stay in your own newbie area. If you don't like it then consider some neutral ones. A "Good" area like Misty would not be a suitable choice for an Ogre or Dark Elk for instance. Although with a little care they can do well in Crushbone or Butcherblock.

In your newbie levels, especially for a new player, having your own guards protect you is a good thing.

Hmm...I stick by Qeynos as the best newbie zone. Even if you are evil you can level up quickly there. However before you go out there you should get some bags to carry stuff because if you are evil then you won't be able to sell in Qeynos so you would have to go to your home city via PoK or in the PoK itself.

Plus, the quick cash gained by selling Plauge Rat Tails definetely makes up for the lack of spiderlings.

EVERY player should work their Bind Wound skill but here's a tip for young Necros.

When I was first starting out, I'd DoT myself and then Bind Wounds. So not only was a getting betters for binding, but I was also getting betters in a particular casting discipline.

While in Qeynos....Gnoll Tooth quest. Now, there are two ways to do this. Give them to the Capt of the guard in Qeynos (located at the local arena), or give them to the female warrior trainer in Halas (also located in the local arena).

Downside to Qeynos one: Bad faction with the Unseen Hand (rogue guild), Corrupt Guards (they are all over qeynos, KOS is BAD here), and with the "Evil" trainers in the Qeynos Sewers

Upside to Qeynos one: Great faction with the merchants and the good guards.

Downside to Halas one: You have to turn in the teeth 4 at a time(though I think 3 might work). Ummmm...that is about it.

Upside to Halas one: Good faction with Halas merchants, guards and I think the White Rose (rogue guild).

Thanks Stands, I've been collecting teeth for over 2 weeks now but I had forgotten who to give them to!

Impressive, my thread is turning out to be a massive chatroom Smiley: jawdrop.

Heres my next tip:

A Warrior needs gear. Where better than from the bazaar, right? Well, kinda...
I have found smithing to provide gear a little easier than shelling out 100 pp for a full set of Banded Mail. Banded Mail is trivial at 115 and the other pieces are lower.
RECIPE FOR BANDED (insert body part)

2 Sheet Metal
1 Water Flask
1 (mask, belt, boot etc. mold)

To upgrade size get Small, Medium, or Large Molds.

Well, since I just said to use Sheet metal I guess I'd better show that recipe too....
RECIPE FOR SHEET METAL

1 Water Flask
2 Small BRICKS of Ore

Make sure you get the BRICKS not PIECES of ore. Using pieces will get you Metal Bits, a recipe I have already described.

A side note:
NEVER get that chain metal you see for sale by the merchants. Here's why.

A. They are more expensive
B. They weigh more
C. They give less protection than Banded Mail

That about covers it. As most of you can probably tell by now, I adore smithing. Maybe its just cuz my main is a warrior, but I find it extremely useful and extremely rewarding.

Peace Out

It also crucially gives Steel Warrior faction. This is pretty hard to get and is the reason I'd always go Halas rather than Qeynos.
