under con?Follow

I headed home to Surefall Glade last night to pick up a new spell and smack ran into the Bloodsaber Defiler that haunts the zone.

As I came out of the tunnel, and headed into the glade proper, she was loose in the open and wreaking havoc among the newbies while leaving a string of corpses in her wake! Since she is lvl 12 and conned blue to me, I thought I could dispatch her with a bit of effort but she damn near killed me too!

My experience against casting mobs is limited so what are the rules of thumb?

Do these type of mobs need to be worked differently because they're allowed to break the rules?

Do some mobs just con below their actual difficulty level?

Or, do I just need to rethink the whole magic resist thing and get to work on boosting that stat?

Casters are definitely undercons. As far as rules of thumb, heh, do your homework is all I can offer. I thought I had when I did my armour quest and went after bandits--hey, conning lite blue and green, w00t!

"returning to your starting point"

Definitely get some MR gear--it's never a bad thing for classes w/the low MR stat.

My method of dealing with casters is simple, I run away.
You need to focus during these fights more than any others, look for the:
Soandso begins the cast a spell
Then hit it, with anything you need to interupt their casting however possible. When a caster isn't casting you'd be amazed how easy they are, they usually have a lot less hitpoints then other mobs of the same level.
Some classes get stun, some get bash, if you have a secondary attack of some sort like a kick, then use it. If you can cast a quick cast DD on them that might interupt the casting as well.

When you go after this one get your magic resist up with the aid of a druid MR spell and get help. I couldn't solo this one until lvl 16, because of the fear it casts. With the help of a friendly ranger though, I was able to take the defiler's head for my newbie quest weapon at lvl 13.

The classic Melee vs. Caster encounter...

My monk always had/has trouble with casters when solo. I do try to boost the MR and it does help. I have found that if you have even one more PC to help you though, you will have a much easier time.

This is generally true with any PC melee vs. (blue+) mob caster encounter. If you can resist the spells you can happily pound away. Interrupting their spells is essential as well. If you have a special attack, save it for when they are casting. It is hard to time it, but it will save you some grief.

I once fought for 20 to 30 minutes with my Shadow Knight vs. The Fabled Evil Eye in Beholder's Maze. I just could not melee fast enough (mana was gone too soon). Fight ended when I gave up (we'll call it a draw...) Infuriating, even when I didn't get charmed or mezzed, the thing would heal and rune itself. (Killed its pet straight off though heh)

On the other hand, my druid had a much easier time with the same mob. I snared, rooted, stacked on DoTs and got out of cast range. Only melee'd when it tried to leave at 20%HP. MOB was dark blue to both of my characters.

Another thing besides MR is ALL or the resists need to be up. MR will resist roots and mezzes and fears and the like, but not DDs. Fire and Cold resists are important when taking on wizards and other heavy DD casters, PR and DR are useful against Necros and DoT classes.

Yes some mobs are under-cons.

The DE in North Ro I was warning about (Dorn B'Dinn) conned the same as the higher dervs but he would have whipped us both easily.

The Bloodsaber Defiler doesn't have a lot of hp but it is hard to hit when you are feared and dotted.

Bear in mind also that con just shows you the level of the mob. Some mobs have higher hp or higher mitigation than others. Some do more damage. This can mean that two equal cons are very different fights although not necessarily under-conned, they just require different tactics.

Oldblue - my 2 bits

For me what has worked (including the caster bandits in West Karana) is generally to hit them fast and hard - I tried snare, root, Flame Lick etc but had mixed success with them.

What works for me is to hit the caster with the best direct damage spell I have and then run in and engage swords flashing. After I have started melee - I'll root the mob if he roots me first - don't want him walking off when his HP drops and me just standing there. If he doesn't root - I don't either - I may snare depending on circumstances. I always use 2 weapons - my reasoning is that with Dual Wield - I can interrupt their casting.

If there's 2 of them (or more) - I sit down and have a good think - and invariably walk away. If I can get one without agro from the other then yeah OK -I'll take them one by one.

At level 20 - I would frequently go back to the WK bandits and just waste the camp - casters and all - most satisfying revenge.

Good Luck

Yes, Dorn is the classic under-con. My 17th level druid ran past that camp and I pulled him while running to meet a friend in Oasis. With SOW on I pulled way ahead and then looked back. He was light blue. I figured, WTH?

After all was said and done I was at 10% life running for the border and he was still at 63%. I think Dorn has always been that way.
