Ranger Sneak Ability ???Follow

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me about the sneak ability?

I'm playing a Wood Elf Ranger. The 'hide' ability at Lvl 1 simply made me vanish when i clicked it. This seemed good as if I needed to rest and med I couldn't be seen. (Well so I thought but no end of characters simply walked up to me and started to talking. Can anyone explain hide as well for that matter.)

Then, a few levels later, sneak presented itself. I guess that means that I can sneak behind mobs and am less likely to get agro, right?

Can anyone expand ( a lot) on this. Particulary as I've now got the Camouflage spell, is sneak now redundant?

As ever, all advice greatly received.

Lance

edit - never could spell camouflage

Hide, when sucessful, makes you invisable to creatures that don't see invis. You can't judge if hide is suceed or failed by looking at yourself; you always vanish even if hide failed. One way to tell if hide is sucessful is to con mobs that normally do not con indifferent to you. Assuming the mob or npc doesn't see invis, and they con indifferent, hide suceed.

Sneak, when sucessful, lets you move pass behind of the mobs without them noticing you. One easy way to tell if sneak is succeed is if you run slower than normal, sneak is sucessful. You can sneak pass behind the mobs who see invis. You can also sneak up to behind of NPCs who normally wouldn't deal with you (faction reason etc) and make them become indifferent, thus trade or bank with you.

The main difference between invis (camoflage) and sneak is, you can sneak pass behind mobs even if they see invis, but mobs will see you sneaking if you are within their visual angle. You can often get pass dangerous areas with the combination of camo and sneak.

The nice advantage rogues get over other classes is that they get success/failure messages for sneak and hide.

I also think it caps a lot higher than for other classes. ('though I do not know if a higher skill automatically means you can move around more mobs than with a lower skill).

I also doubt if rangers can use hide and sneak at the same time. Someone else should fill this in :)

If you try to use hide while moving you get a message that says you must be still. You can hide and hit sneak button, but if you move you will lose hide.

I believe I have read somewhere that only rogues can move while hidden, and then only if they are also sneaking.

Coincidentally, I just tried it with my level 25 ranger last night, since he now has both sneak and hide. Even when everything else (conned indifferent, moved slower, etc.) seemed to indicate success with both skills, moving always caused him to become visible.

FYI: Rangers do not get the Hide skill until level 25. The OP got it as a racial skill, I believe.

Right, only class that can use Sneak and Hide successfully is a Rogue. Though I believe that creatures that can see invisible will still see a rogue even when he is in Stealth Mode.

Why this is I don't know...guess Verant does not want us to be able to go everywhere with impunity.

Also I think lvl of mob might have some bearing on the Stealth Mode of a Rogue, as I have had high con mobs see me, even in a successful Stealth Mode.

There is a way to check if Hide has worked, automatically, without looking for a change in Agro message when conning a non indifferent MOB.

Make a hot key for your hide and add in /t 'your characters name'. If the hide didn't work you will target yourself, if it did work you get the message I dont see anyone around here by that name (or some such). Works a treat ;)

Correct.

To make sure you grind to 63 and get Shroud of Stealth: Rogue walhalla!

Not sure. I know most, if not all, named mobs see through regular hide/sneak. I still have to meet a Planar boss which sees me in SoS mode, though. This includes Bertox, Saryrn and Agnarr.

It's quite simple: once you get SoS and Escape, you are set for some very decent scouting. Frankly, those skills are almost as class defining as backstab and two fantastic abilities to have! :)
