Buy the spell Strike when you get enough money. If you start on the Morden Rasp server, you can save a lot of money because a lot of people are just in newbie armour.
Hunt in the area around your city to start with until about level 5, then move further out. Try Blackburrow after that, usually people in there so you can find a group.

Perhaps a bad assumption, but I'll assume you do not have 10Kpp to spend on equipment, and you are not twinking too heavily...

Not to worry at level 1 too much about equipment. You can quest the newbie armor from your home town. Highly recommended because you will be killing things for xp, gaining levels and skillups, and getting a decent set of armor to boot. At early levels you can fill in any of the other armor slots with leather or if you can, cheap bazaar items.

I would keep an eye out for items with HP, Mana or Wis. Also my High Elf Cleric was a bit short of STR at the early levels. You might pick up a Golden Ruby Ring (+2 STR +4 WIS). (Should be 160pp< $$< 200pp but worth it.) Ruby jewelry is STR and WIS.

In the early going you will need to melee, so you probably want a decent 1HB item, and maybe a shield. (I used newbie weapon and Shiny Brass Shield) The newbie armor should take you close to level 20, but I would start upgrading slots when possible.

I would upgrade to the best armor as you can, replace the leather with chain or plate if you can afford it. LDoN player crafted armor is quite cheap at this time. As a cleric in groups you will not be called on to melee but you do want to be protected if you get aggro. Do not overlook AC.

Have fun. Clerics are different, but played well, will make everyone's day better.
