newb help for petsFollow

Please some help for a newbie mage with pets.
Why do pets disappear when you zone?

And what are the best pets? It seems earth elementals are great for rooting and the Air elemental is weak. Haven't tried Fire or water yet.

Does it depend on the MOB you are fighting?

Because they do. Smiley: smile

The reason may be something to do with naming becoming non-unique if you and Jobober cross to a zone with another Jobober in it. Although I would have thought that could be easily addressed in coding. Beastlord pets used to be able to zone with them and apparently this is why they are called Soandso's warder and no a normal pet name. The same may be true of Wizard familiars.

Earth may be fine to solo with but it causes havoc in groups with the random rooting. Each has it's special properties and I'll leave it to a better mage than I am tyo explain them - or throw you a link to the mage sites.

To a certain extent it depends on the mobs but since casting and kitting out a pet consumes a fair bit of mana you can't keep swapping. Air pets stun which is very good for caster mobs.

I would suggest checking out:

http://www.magecompendium.com/

On the left side of the main page click on "The Library" link. The first topic is on Magician pets and is quite detailed.

Mage pets as with all pets disapear when you zone there is no sure reason why that i know of. As for which pet you will use this is what I do with my alt Mage which is level 62 atm: in groups I would use an Air or Water, Air stuns and Water backstabs so the choice is yours really. After 61 you will probably use no other than the 61 Air he is by far the best but I have heard the 65 Rathe's Son is mighty nice also. Fire pets are pretty much worthless but as with any class experiment and have fun.
