Is it too late to start EQ?Follow

#1 May 08 2004 at 9:07 AM Rating: Decent
I am new to MMORPGs but I have found myself dieing for EQ2 to come out so I think I would like to play EQ. From what I have read EQ has been around a long time so is it to late to try to learn it? Are a lot of people still playing it?

Thanks for any info

I started playing about 6 months ago with 4 friends. It has turned into a weekly group, and has been a lot of fun. We were going to wait for EQ2 to come out as well, and I'm so glad we didn't. "Everquest Evolutions" has the first 5 expansions, and for $30 is a lot of MMORPG for the money. Give it a go, you won't regret it.........unless you get hopelessly hooked :)

Thank you.
Thant's what I was wanting to do but I didn't want to buy it and find the servers empty.

EQ just passed the 5 year mark and although many people are waiting for EQ2 there are still LOTS of people playing EQ(1).

I think you will find that there is a huge spread in experience level as well with many people at the higher end of the game (lvl 60 - 65) but also many people in mid game (lvl 40 - 50) and... you guessed it, plenty of people who are new to EQ.

I, myself am still a newbie since I've barely been playing a month and let me assure you, there is NO shortage of players or adventure at my level of play!

Please join us and if you'd like, roll up a character on the Morden Rasp server where I play and I'll be happy to show you around!

You can look for me on Morden Rasp playing as Moriarty (a lvl 14 Human Ranger) or his younger brother Portamento (a lvl 9 Human Bard). If you send me a tell ingame, (we can explain how to do that and many other things here on these boards), I'll be happy to have you take me up on my offer.

Good luck and good hunting!

There are lots of die-hard EQ players waiting for EQ2 for different reasons.

A number of friends either can't afford EQ2 or (like me) have invested too much time in EQ toons to part company.
They say they're hoping that EQ2 will attract a few players away and make things a little quieter. Free up some camps, hell, even PC might be manageable! Smiley: wink

A lot of people still play EQ, you'll have no shortage of players on most of the servers. As far as being too late to get into it that's pretty far off. The game is far more newbie-friendly now than it was when it first came out.

With EQ2 and World of Warcraft coming out in the somewhat near future I do think a good chunk of the original EQ playerbase will move on, and maybe make playing a little more comfortable for those of us that are staying behind, like Nobby said. Don't let the game's age deter you, it can still be fun.

It's never too late to start EQ, apparently. I just started about 3 weeks ago and I already find people all over that are worse newbies than I am :) Of course, I've been helped out so very much by the fact that I can come onto these forums and ask questions...and get swift, accurate, insightful answers from the experienced players who come here all the time. <Yes, that's ***-kissing, but it was earned, so there.>

Although there are still lots of players on EQ, I fear that some day Sony will shut it down... your opinion?

The quick answer is NO, it is never to late to play this game - Everquest constantly resets all monsters and quests, so you are still able to do all the original quests plus new ones that keep poping up with expansions.

The EQ experience/leveling situation is such that people'w characters will always be outgrowing their current hunting area and moving onto a higher one, freeing up room for those coming behind. As an example, the monsters in the newbie zone stop giving experience after you reach 5 levels or so and the loot is poor, so you will go look for new challenges.

I have been playing for about 2 years and my daughter has a second account that is about 1 year old - it amazes me that zones that used to be packed 18 months ago are now more reasonable (no long waits for camps, etc). Also there are new servers added for the purpose of having a fresh slate to start from (except for transfers).

With regard to the last post about EQ being someday discontinued, it shows no signs of that so far, and as long as new expansions come out regularly and people keep playing, there is no reason for them to stop.

Finally, a lot of us EQ people will be slow to move to EQ2 since most of us still have a lot of achomplish yet and places we have heard about but never been to.

I don't think Sony will shut it down. They are investing far to many resources into the expansions. Had Sony lost interest you would of never seen the progression to the every wonderful DX9 or the revamping of GoD with the next expansion release. We definitely would not see the level 65 cap being raised even higher. If Sony's intent were to capture a paying audience for EQ2 they would of attacked the market much differently.

Sony like all gaming companies will continue to release new games to compete with the competition. New games coming out are never guaranteed a success. EQ is one of those win situations Sony took a chance and won! The next venture may surpass or may fail it is all about staying in the market.

I started in December and there were never any problems getting players to play with. In fact on RZ sometimes I think we have more lower levels than high. Many high levels are playing alts to get a taste of something different. What you need to realize is most will make a new toon and instantly go to POK and then travel to places other than thier home. So if you plan to start EQ go to POK to find the people cause most home cities are pretty deserted. That is definitely not a reflection on the number of new players, just POK gives better acces to other areas.
