Only if you have 250k spare to start off with.

Either get a lot of money 250k-350k to max it, or find a sponser to pay for you. (Hey, some people do it)

Even if you spend the money (there are cheaper ways to do it than 250kpp but involves a lot of farming) it's not always easy to make money with smithing. If you do make it to 250 and you happend to catch some great smithing items early on new expansion, you can make money. For example, when PotC quest came out, the sickles were easily going for 10-15kpp each. It settled down to about 5kpp for a while then to 2kpp. On Xev, they are now going from 400pp to 1kpp range depends on the night. At 1.5k-2k range, you can still make good money on those but below that, it's not worth trying.

As for the other money makers at GM, there are PoP smithing and other high end smithing. As for PoP armors, unless you are elemental flagged, components are way to rare and too expensive. Even if you have enough material to give them a try, the success rate is just too low to make money off them. With some great armor released with ornate patterns and great LDoN adventure point armors, you can't sell the PoP items high enough to make money.

As for things like Tae Ew armor, the components are way too rare and again, not worth making them. Some cultural BD armor does sell well. If you can get a steady supply of BD and some components, you can actually make some decent plats, beyond expected failures.

You are almost better off with making sub-components for tradeskills. You can make a lot more from that than any high end smithing.

You did not specify HOW MUCH money. Surely it does takes a lot of time if not plat to get to where you can make several hundred plat on a smithed item. You CAN make some money with simple stuff. You can turn gold into plat by smelting rusty weapons into sheet metal. A few gold for weapons and supplies, yeilds sheet metal which can be sold for 1pp+ but again this is probably not what you had in mind.

You may find a market for some other easily smithed items, such as skinning knives, or mid level stuff like fillet knives, dairy spoons, or embroidery and cultural needles used in tailoring.

The LDoN armor market is a bit saturated now, but some people can make a bit of money there.

These would require you to have a character in the bazaar for more than minimal time.

Bigger money is in the high-end stuff like cultural armors or subcombines for Solstice Earrings. Stuff with 335 trivials where you fail one out of three times and components cost hundreds of PP. I gathered items for 4 Mistletoe Sickles which cost around 600pp each attempt. Made 2 sickles, which can sell for 1.8K-2.3Kpp each. So if I did sell them, I make about 100% on the investment. Not bad, but if you had to buy components you would clear much less. I farmed most of the stuff, including a few of the expensive gems.

If you intend on skilling up in smithing anyway, look at some of the higher end tradeskill items and see if there are any smithing sub-combines that might be marketable.

I used to sell picnic baskets which are a mid-level tailoring sub-combine for misty thicket picnics, so you can make SOME money with this approach.

...But it all kinda reminds me of the old joke:

Q - How do you make a small fortune at <insert activity here>?

A - Start with a LARGE fortune!

Just saw this tread and was going to say I made a small fortune in being a smith, alas I started with a large fortune. But then I read further and Old blue messed up the gag.
You smith or tradeskill as a release from the grind of kill to loot to sell and level. Some items will turn a profit others wont. I still make some money off fletching the basic dmg 1 rng 150 arrow. Never made any money yet and my smithing with jonwin is at 189.
