When you make a new character, do you just dive in and learn on your own from the ground up, or do you study strategies for your new class and ask lots of questions?
I get a kick out of my wife. She's the study it type. Me, I don't ask for directions.
I'm just curious how fellow EQ players approach playing a new class that's unfamiliar to them.
I know for a lot of vets, they get a great idea of most of the different classes by observing how they operate within groups, but if you were a total newbie, what would you do?

You really don't need to ask what you have to do. It's pretty much common sense. For instance you are a cleric you heal you don't melee. Your DPS is pretty sad, but your heals and buffs are really nice. I usually just go with the flow, but since PoP came out people will generally kick you out if you don't perform your role in the group so it's more important then when EQ first came out.
I read a lot of strategy guides. I don't want to waste time making a bunch of mistakes I can avoid simply by reading a little bit. You might as well learn from others.
That doesn't mean I won't try to figure out new things that nobody has figured out before, but I'll try to avoid rediscovering the wheel.

I definitely go diving head in. I love role playing. I try to get a good, but interesting race/class combo, think of the personality, then just go for it. I only read up when I need help. Otherwise, I'm just a wandering traveler in search of making a name for himself.
Rarely, I'll dive in. Most of the time, I study, study study. I have a unique talent for making an *** of myself when I AM prepared. When I'm not prepared....well, let's just say that it's about as pretty as a communal shower in a retirement home.
