Best duo partner for mage?Follow

Don't want a necro (already have a 65).
Thinking maybe a druid or a beast...

Well from personal experience I can say that a druid/mage combo is pretty nice. Druid buffs pet, snares and dots mob, and keeps the party healed up all while acting as a taxi. Makes for some quick and efficient kills

yeah druid would be a good idea, heals come in handy and druids are decent dps too.

Seems you would want a partner that would neutralize the mages weaknesses. Crowd control/Healing which class would max those 2 areas for your mage, that is the way to go. Druid seems the closest to being able to do that, a few other classes could come close-Shaman/Paladin/Cleric/Bard off the top of my head.

Lots of variables there, and what do you want more, and what are you willing to give up? Shaman could buff the crap out of both pets for example. Paladin cannot gate, with the mage, etc. and so on.

if you dont want a nec, then id go sham or sk.

sham for all the buff/debuff and ability to melee if pet is starting to get overwhelmed. not to mention nice heals, and best regen in the game.

no ports, but both classes can gate.

with the sk, you get fear kitting (so up to T1 zones) a suppior knight class for agro controll. that also means higher DPS. a baby pet that is not really worth much until the SK is 60+, but hey its a cheep DoT.

pally would work too, but the hunting would be more challanging then with the sk. both sk and pally can split pull extreemly well and both hold agro very well. with pally you get rez though, but with sk you get summon corpse to cut down on CR time.

bards with a mage would be not so good as you can not realy use the true power of the bard in a setting like that. none of your bard songs will effect the mage pet until 65th with mega AA so why bother.

cleric would just be a bot sitting there doing a little rooting, and healing of the pet from time to time. not much fun for that cleric if you ask me. if you are 2boxing, then a cleric would be great though as it will keep the pet alive.

chanter would be a great partner. both have nice dps, and with a chanter you get extra mana regen, haste, and slow, plus some rather nice debuffs.

but if it were my mage, id want a nec or sham with me over just about any other class. yes sham way over druid any day.

I'd go with enchanter. Mages have almost no mana regen and enches can also mez adds and slow down the mobs for your pet to beat on.

if you go chanter, let them pull with slow and get their pet involved too. this will drasticaly increase the DPS and the taunt ability of the pets.

I duo with my RL friend 65 mage... We seem to do really well in PoV which is still a high leveled place for me only being lvl 52 After I slow the mob we have no problems. DD and Doting and the mob is dead. Personaly I think a Shaman and a mage is the best.

I'm sure it differs by level range, but 2 pet classes usually do well together. A beastlord is a fun partner. They can slow, melee, heal and offtank an add.

A shaman or necro are also good choices. I've had great luck pairing up with both of these classes.

I hesitate to duo with the tank classes because of their need for heals.

Druids are fun, but would not be my first choice. I tend to try to kill mobs as quickly as possible so don't really take advantage of their dots.

Actually I think clerics have fun pairing up with me. Aside from the occasional heal on my pet, it's one of the few situations where they can nuke and melee (without being told "heal me", or "you should be medding"). Makes a fun change for them. Probably not the most efficient duo, but they definately don't "bot" when I've paired up with them.

I would stay away from melee classes completely if you plan to duo. The healing aspect they need will drastically slow down your progress in higher levels.

I enjoy Druids because they have great transportation and healing but after a while kiting can get very very boring!!!! It will be a safe means for you to level but sitting on the side casting here and there while they run in circles can get old.

I played with a Shammy last night and he was quite impressive! He was in there meleeing, healing, buffing and his pet was helping with adds. Granted he is high level but he really brought a lot to the group.

Being a Necro I am partial. We can be extremely versitile when grouping. Where it can get hairy and this happen last night with a Wizzy I was duoing with is this... I had pulled with cling, dotted and rooted letting it rot while the Wizzy nooked. My root and cling wore off at the same time so he was on me fast. I had so much agro my pet could not stop him so I had to FD....well the Wizzy instantly took the hit. I was able to root and cling and pull him off of her but by then she was at 35%. Crowd control is a major issue in a duo combination in my opinion. So far Shammy's and Druids seem to have that down pat backing up with heals and buffs.

Reason I haven't mentioned Chanters....it is hard to find one that really plays thier toon well and doesn't live afraid of dying. A really good Chanter will rock your world a really bad Chanter will leave you and them both dead every kill.

Everything's been pretty well hashed over in this thread...

What makes the duo with the mage work well are 2 key things. A) Pets, B) Dots/Heals/Debuffs. This points away from the Enchanter, as while we have the highest DPS pets in game (charmed, not summoned), with the lack of snare or healing (pc healing), this can get dangerous fast. Our summoned animations work ok, but we still have to get hit in order to make them attack, and the lack of control over them we have can be bad in the wrong situations.

Shammy or BL would be great options. Shammies get decent pets in their 30s, while maintaining a great level of buffs/debuffs/heals/root. BL's get great pets at level 9, also while maintaining slightly weaker heals/buffs/ect.

As a side note: Once a slacker friend of mine gets into mid 20s on his necro, we have a trio group of Mage, BL, and Nec...we should be able to tear stuff up ;)

Thanks for all the responses.

I'm leaning towards the Shaman because I haven't played one before, although the druid is enticing.

Shammy.
With slow and heals a mage's pet can tank just fine. You also get great buffs and shammy can help with dps a bit with pets and dots. They have root for simi CC and haste. I have a friend shammy and her and I make a great group for just about any zone.

a shammy = best friend for any melee class/pet.

there is nothing better to have around for a melee type.

shammy = good heals, best haste, best slow, best regen, best stat buffs.

a melee without a shammy is only half as good as it could be.

Chanter has the best haste not the shammy.

Actually chanter has better haste then shaman and can mez adds. The only thing he can't do is buff stats/hp and heal, but the mage gets some pretty good pet heals. I'd rather have an ench to give me clarity/KEI/etc. to go with the slows/haste/cripple.

Hmm, does Night's Dark Terror take on a Mage pet? I think it does on a Necro pet.

This is one helluva good buff spell.

There is also the Augmentation series, don't Boon of Garou and Augment stack? Or is it Trickster's?

Anyway, a chanter can really buff up a pet if you get the right series stacked, this is partly what makes the Chanter pets so powerful.
