Well, could someone help me out? I just started EverQuest and have no clue what to do. I don't know what I should start out with, what town, what to worship, what to kill, and where to go. I couldn't find anyone in the towns either...Could someone give me some general tips on this game? I bought it along with all the expansion packs and a 3month game card, but im lost. Is there a good class/race to start out with as a noobie? I am now in the world as a HalfElf Warrior...All help would greatly be appreciated, thanks!! Oh and, what would be a good server to start on?

Here we go again!!! First of all I think we need a sticky for this question. (Do we even have sticky capability on these boards?)

Now as to what you should do...

As has been said here by many others both wiser and more experienced than me, play a character that you're going to enjoy. Don't choose something because it's the *best* for this or that aspect of the game.

IMHO, there are no wrong answers. Since you can have 8 characters at one time on any server, go ahead and experiment. Try out several things and you will get a feel for the way the game plays while you're finding out what kind of character you enjoy playing.

You will also develop an appreciation for what the other character types have to deal with for having walked a mile in their shoes.

Never be afraid to ask questions in game, everyone was a newbie at some point and nobody is going to look down on you for being a beginner. In fact, most of us are happy you chose to share this addiction and would be happy to help.

As soon as you are comfortable with the basics, begin your newbie armor quest. the rewards aren't bad and the experience is very helpful. (details for these can be found in the Quest section of this site.)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, join Allakhazam as a premium member ASAP! There is a wealth of information here and it is well worth the cost.

And last but not least, check this thread:

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1&mid=1083202064428444078&num=8

and read the post by Iluien the Silent (4th post from the top) for an outstanding explaination of how to begin your EQ experience.

He has come up with what I feel is the definative answer to your question.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing!

Excellent advice. I must add that I found the same information very helpful.

Above all other things, if you don't know, ask.

School of Hard Knocks

I started playing EQ a summer ago on a college campus here in MO. The PCs were junk and could only run Kunark. I started a Half Elf Bard because I liked the idea of having many different skills at my disposal. I honed my skills (died a lot and learned from mistakes) in Qeynos Hills, Black Burrow, Qey Catacombs, the Karanas, and Everfrost Peaks.

What I learned (correct me as needed):

Bards aren't meant to tank
This thing called "twisting" your songs
Buy as little gear from NPC Merchants as possible, try to buy gear from other players for less (or Bazaar if not playing old school EQ)
Make what gear you can
Have something equiped in every slot
Once past Lv 10 you must retrieve your corpse, so don't panic and run in unfamiliar territory, look for a landmark, /loc, and die with your boots on. Literally.
*Your friends and allies are everything*

If you are ever on Stromm look up Khristov, or on the Tribunal, Odessyus. Good luck getting your last name.

Best advice I can give you is to have fun and don't be in a hurry to level up. Furthermore, you can NOT learn everything about this game or your class for that matter in a week, month, or even a year. In otherwords, take your time!

As far as starting classes go, I would advise against enchanter or bard for your first character. These are challenging to play and have a steep learning curve-- they are awesome just hard to play.

A warrior is fine for a first character though, don't worry so much about what you should be doing, just go and explore and have fun!

Oh yeah and make sure you talk to your guildmaster and such to find out what you need for your newbie armor quest. That stuff is pretty good!

Is Stromm populated? Why is it I never see anybody around on my current server? I am on Erollisi Marr at the moment but mainly just fiddling around trying to see what class I'd like. I want a populated server, I hardly see anyone around as of yet. Oh and another thing, should I go with ranger, or paladin? If paladin, 1handed slashing or 2handed slashing? If ranger, are they really that hard to understand? Thanks.

Go to Stromm, I think it is a better choice in the long run. I have a ranger and love it, but Pallies are good too.

Read all the character creation guide here, it will give you a feel.

Rangers sound cool (Should I be wood elf ranger??). But what's so great about Stromm?

I'll paste the response I posted to another question about *which starting class to choose* in a thread that ran a few days before your post.
At that time, I wrote:

A lot of folks hereabouts are gonna recommend starting with a caster like a Necro or an Enchanter. Others will tell you that you should go with a Paladin or a Monk or maybe just a generic fighter type and they'll all have good reasons and evidence to back these choices up.

However, I think that if you're trying to get an idea of how to apply various game mechanics and get comfortable with the basics of just playing, the most well rounded character in the game as well as one of the easiest to get started and keep moving upward has got to be the Ranger.

You'll get to dual wield (weapon in each hand) at level 17 and use a bow as soon as you can afford one. Bow-kiteing (bringing the bad guys to you instead of chasing them across the field) is A LOT of fun and the technique will make you valuable in a group as well as while soloing.

You'll get your first set of spells at level 9 and by that point, you'll be ready for them instead of being overwhelmed by them. And tracking is flat out, one of the most useful skills in the game.

You're even able to forage which means that everywhere you go, you'll be collecting useful things which can be used by you or sold to others.

But most important of all, Rangers are FUN to play! They do fine soloing and are valuable assets in either duo or group.

Personally I'd go with Human (Oh, wait... that's what I did!) but Half-Elf would work out just as well. Choose either one of these and you'll start out in SureFall Glades which is a good home base for a new player.  A ranger in any other of the available races is also doable. Any way you slice it, rangers are just a flexable, viable character class.

Strom is the name of one of the newest servers in EQ. Though its almost a year old IIRC.
People like strom because as a new start up server NO ONE was allowed to transfer Higher characters. Everyone started out as a level one and had to make/earn their gear. Ie you couldnt kill spiders, take a stack of silks (20 of any one item is called a stack) sell them for 200p and then buy someones old armor and weapons that they no longer need.

If you go to the sony station board they list the starting dates of all the servers and any special rules the servers have.

A wood elf (WE) ranger is an excellent choice character, especially with the "Find" feature making getting around Kelethin (the Wood Elf tree city) a lot easier.

Stromm is a good starting server, as you'll find many players of many different abilities.

If you do start a WE ranger, keep an eye out for Miekii (I think that's the name) - she's a low-level cleric I recently started and currently have hunting in the area. I'd be glad to group with you.
