I very seldom get on Usenet, but it has an allure that I can't resist on occasion, and just go on a spree as I dig through tons of posts. I browsed my way into an EQ group and came across a thread that linked to the above post. Sorry if it's old news, but I thought it was interesting enough. Here's a link to the actual Usenet post, if anyone cares to see it:

Edit: Anyone have any screenshots, or know of any, of Uqua and these other GoD events that seem so uber? Posts or links would be much appreciated. Keeping in mind I don't know jack about any of this other than what I've read in this guy's post.

Yikes, I recognize the names of the things in there from beta and in game interactions with Developers. Of course, he could be making it up from having become familiarized with it in beta, but I actually think he's telling the truth.

Either way though, he's a gimp.

So he figured out how to hack a game that he can't excell at without hacking, one that according to his own words is "poorly put together".

And he managed to get caught while doing it. Sounds to me like he just described himself as having pretty subpar skills at everything he does.

And we're supposed to be impressed because of what exactly?Smiley: rolleyes

I just thought it was a somewhat interesting read. Presuming he's reliable, and told the truth, he could've been more discrete and probably gotten away with it for a long time. Not get busted after a few days. Who knows, like I said, just something to waste a few minutes.

Though he could've furnished screenshots if he's as uber as he says.

Actually, to play Devil's Advocate here. He did state that the only reason he really got caught was that the axe he looted bugged his character and this caught the attention of the powers that be.

From a hacker point of view, pretty impressive. From a gamer's point of view, pretty lame that he has to stoop to hacking a program to make any real progress.

I don't care what SOE says regarding this guy. What he did is very impressive. At that level of understanding, its really not cheating, its owning the game. He did not play his character, he just acted like a GM. If the guy can find ways around an entire staff of programmers, managers, etc.. whose sole purpose is to prevent cheating, then he has improved the game in my book. Now SOE realizes that there are single persons smarter then their collective whole and they better get their butt's in gear.

I have absolutely no knowledge of how this guy accomplished it. I am barely able to turn a computer on and will most certainly never reach the higher end game. However, I really enjoy the game from a newbie perspective and its guys like that who helped make it so. Just my opinion.

Designers and programmers think in terms of how to bring the game content to the players, cheaters think in terms of how to sneak pass the rules. Not that the cheaters are smarter than the programers, just that they think differently with different objectives.

That cheater is smart, yes, but he's still taking adventage of game bugs and expliot them, nothing real worth noting. While it maybe a good effort on figuring out the bug, in reality it is no more than the person(s) figured out the dupping bug in Diablo 1.

Well, don't give them too much credit, most often those security flaws are knowingly put in as a sacrifice for game playability. Putting in the ability to check for all the loopholes would make the game effectively unplayable for everyone else.

For example, these popular hacks are all basically client hacks, where they take advantage of speed being controlled on your own computer to warp around or move super fast in game. Suppose that speed wasn't controlled client side in order to prevent all the speed hacking that happens (where people remove some checks/modify how fast their character moves, or lets them teleport around). Suddenly, anyone that lags at all would effectively freeze in place whenever they hit a lag spike. Very bad playability, and they knowingly put themselves at risk from a hack in order to have a more playable game.

That's why I dislike hacking like this, because most often the only option is to make the game -worse- in order to deal with it, or just allow it to continue on and try to catch people. I imagine the /open command will probably get a bit more clunky in design since this guy hacked the client to trick it into thinking all NPCs were chests and ran around /opening them for instant kills.
