Firiona Vie: LanguageFollow

Well I finally succumbed and created a character on Firiona Vie. I tried it once before but during my play times it was always empty. Recently I have noticed that it has been surpassing Innoruuk in population numbers.

Anyway.. quick question: I realize there is no 'common' language and I see people talking in unknown tongues all the time. This seems really troublesome in the bazaar where I can't tell if someone is selling an item for 25p or 25k, or for that matter if they are selling or buying.

What do those of you who play here do to talk to other people? Any other hints or suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Learn other languages.

Mostly you can get by in Human or Elvish. However if you are going to roleplay that Iksar you might not wish to be seen speaking "softskin" languages in public. You can learn fairly easily in groups or find someone in PoK to teach you.

If Kaolian still logs into FV he is a master in all languages and will probably teach you three at once. This will make your ears bleed.

I also started a character in FV to try it out and see if I liked it.

The thing is, the evening I played, although I encountered several instances of *so and so speaks in a language you do not understand*, messages in the chat box, information in the interface (like the merchant's window) was always in English so I always knew what things were and how much they cost.

Since the Bazaar uses a variation of the NPC merchant window, there shouldn't be a problem. Discussions in the chat window are a whole different matter but you shouldn't have to depend on these conversations to obtain food water weapons armor etc. If you find that there is a problem, maybe you'll need to find merchants that speak the same language as you!

Also the *important* NPCs like your guild leader and trainer will undoubtedly be able to speak the same language as you so there should not be a problem there.

Chat channels and tells are exempt from the language thing if you really need to communicate with someone.

Or they were a year ago when I last logged in.

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Human and Elvish are the two most common languages in use on FV Smiley: smile

Thanks for all the replies (and thanks Kaolian for the offer to teach me). It was elvish basically. I came across a huge number of amazingly friendly people that took time out from their playing to teach me several languages. Once I got elvish down, I could understand 90% of what everyone was saying.

And let me add, after reading Atiba's thread, that anyone considering trying out FV, should. Yeah there are twinks here, but you should consider the astonishing friendliness and generosity of the people that play on this server. I have been on here for only 4 days and never before in 5 years of playing have I had my faith in mankind restored so quickly.

Um...how does one skill-up in languages w/o throwing training points @ the skill?

I kicked off a couple by placing 1 point in them, but I've not managed to get either of them to move. Does it take speaking to other PCs or can it be accomplished by speaking to NPCs in their native tongue?

Gotta hear from other PC's for the skill to go up in language. So find a chatty blonde elf and hand her a swimsuit....that oughta wind her up...

You have to hear it, not speak it. And it will not work in /say I don't think, needs /tell or /groupsay.

There was a trick a while back of people spamming traders who were afk and getting skill raises from their afk message. I'm not sure if this still works. If they are not truly afk it could make you mighty unpopular.

You don't have to prime them with training points and as you found can only put one in anyway. You cannot talk to yourself either.
