Magician newbie questionsFollow

#1 Apr 30 2004 at 1:42 PM Rating: Decent
I just started a gnome magician and have a few questions I would like to ask of the experienced magicians. I appreciate any helpful advice.

1) When I attack a mob, which is better: nuke while my pet physically attacks the mob, or nuke and physically attack while my pet helps out? Or is there some other strategy?

2) Are there better weapns that I can buy very cheaply that would be better than my summoned dagger?

3) Is the summoned choker a good piece of armour, or should I be looking for something better that is not summoned?

When I started out I always melee'd the mob with my pet and nuked as well. This will change as you get a few more levels under you.

You might try the bazaar but all in all your pet will do just fine without any weapons for now.

You will be using a lot of malachite up front. If money is an issue then use the choker - it has regeant conservation which will help you save a little bit of money on malachite. If money isn't an issue then you can probably afford something with better stats.

The mage compendium has a wealth of information about all aspects of playing a magician. For new mage creation I would recommend looking at this thread. Also don't be afraid to browse everything in there. Don't try and take everything in at once, you'll get overwhelmed.

I have a 24th lvl Mage, and I agree with what Madahme said.

1. I would melee now while you can.

2. I don't think you'll find much better than the dagger. At least nothing that will be cost effiecient everytime you lose your pet.

3. Unless this is an alt and you have money to spare, why spend it on something you can summon for free? I'ld use the cash on upgrading a slot you can't fill with summoned gear. My mage still uses all the summoned stuff for the slots I can.

Also, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, don't forget to summon one for your pet. He won't benefit from the reagent consevation, but it does add to his armor class.

melee while u still can. its next to impossible to melee once you hit the higher levels. the mobs just hit too hard.

the summoned dagger is ok. but i used a two handed staff for more damage. its slow but cheap.

use all the summoned items that you can. i still do, even at level 56.

also: remember to buy and use all the spells that you have. i didn't do this early on and i had to spend hours bringing up my casting skills. spells like damage shield, burnout, invis etc. you'll really need those in the higher levels.

At very low levels, melee alongside your pet as much as you can. Use your damage shield on both you and your pet.

Step back from the fight if you're getting too beat up and concentrate on nuking the mob and healing your pet. When the mob turns to run away, step back into the fight to help finish it off.

It's just never a bad idea to work on all your skills, including your melee skills.

A drachnid leg tip or Walrus Tooth are both acceptable and inexpensive dagger type weapons for lower level casters.

The good thing about your summoned focus items is that they all have hp/mana on them, plus a touch of AC. The neck piece is actually the one I use the least. This is a nice item to save up for Sapphire Velium Necklace. Even the Silvered Sapphire Necklace (which would be the cheapest) is 4 int/4 str, which is pretty handy for weak armed casters.

Your pet is your primary weapon..Use him well. Forget meleeing - You will virtually never melee once you get higher up (If you do you're already dead, you just haven't had time to fall down!)
At lower levels, Fire pet is probably your best choice, followed by earth (root is your friend when soloing). Fire pet's DS saves you from haveing to cast another spell yourself....
Use ALL your summoned items....Pet armor, weapons, and when you get them the jewelry for yourself.
Get your Focus items from quests in Temple Sol as early as you can- You will use them until you get your Epic or hit 60 and they DO make a difference in your pets stats.
Get J-boots --
Mage is my main as well as my original EQ character. I have primarily soloed my entire life on EQ until lvl 63, so dont listen to those that say you can't. Exp may be better in groups but it can be done (Although my wife's necro does solo harder stuff at the same levels...:) )

While I agree with most of Fulltilt's advice, my take on pets is very different.

The fire pet does have the greatest damage output, pre 50. In sub 30 levels, however, I generally found it had too few hitpoints so only used it for group situations. From 30 to 50 I used the fire pet almost exclusively, but had to get used to casting a lot more heals than with the other pets.

The earth pet, in my opinion, is the worst choice for most situations. This pet has the lowest agility of all the pets, so it rarely avoids a mob's swing. This is why he has the most hit points. The earth pet also has the lowest damage output of all the pets. Instead of casting a damage spell like our other pets, he spends much of his time getting hit while he waves his arms in the air, trying to cast his root.

I believe the fact that the earth pet casts root retards a young magician's aggro learning curve. Do NOT rely on root spell to keep a mob off you. Learn how to nuke effectively and not pull aggro off your pet/tank. This is one of the most basic and important things a magician must learn.

Your pet is not only your creation, but also your training buddy.

Many threads list the water pet as the best choice for lower levels, and I have to agree. It has good HP, very fast regen, and is very poison resistant.

I know I'm in the minority in that I used my earth pets less than any other magician around, but I do believe my reasoning is solid.
