EQ-questionnaire for master thesisFollow

#1 Apr 29 2004 at 5:02 PM Rating: Decent
Hi there,

I am writing my master thesis in media sciences about EQ. To acquire some hard data about players, I designed a multiple-choice survey that will take 5 to 10 minutes answering. You would help me very, very much if you could spare some time answering some questions here: www.everquest.de.tt
Thanks a lot for your help,

Darknicky

Ahh, don't be too harsh Tarv. At least Nicky is honest about what she is using it for.

Or maybe its that I just got suckered by a picture of a dark-elf female with a nice name? Smiley: blush

Hey darknicky, this may sound like a really strange question, but do you know the Kapmeyer family in Marburg at all? I stayed in Marburg for three weeks during my highschool exchange (i'd write this auf Deutsch, but my german is really rusty)

I've got a poster map of Marburg on my wall behind my computer actually

The survey looks legetimate by the way, so if anyone was thinking of taking it, go for it.

The part I never understand about these (aside from when they send me emails threatening legal action) is that there's allready a metric *** ton of data out there.

Why reinent the wheel?

Doesn't anyone study twins anymore?

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

<qoute> "The reason I became interested in this topic was the shockingly poor level of research that had gone into the entire phenomenon of gaming and the wider related area of human computer interaction. (Most of this has focussed on single player games and aggression in children.) <quote>

I am not sure why it was described by the writer in the thread Tarv recommened for reading as "the shockingly poor research done". All one needs to do is run a search in Google (or any preferred search engine, I do not prefer google myself). Search for "MMORPG studies" or "Griefer studies" and the links may be endless.

In fact, if one searches the links long enough they will find a multiple Dev conversation discussing Griefers in MOGs(at least one Dev admitted to being a griefer) and how the game producers are trying to find ways to stop this type of play. Check back with your favorite games occasionally, you will probably recognize the attempts at controlling the "problem".

I personally do not suggest that any person give an email address they care about to an unknown person, not that I am implying the current researcher is a bad person, tis just a good rule of thumb.

sorry, no neat sig ~leai-33 bard~ (updated no neat sig, two deaths now, may be a 32 bard again soon rofl)

Hi,

thank you very much for your answers. I am very glad that already many people have filled out the questionnaire.
Brialla, you are right, there are a lot of studies on the internet but most of them only with about 20 to 50 interviewees. I think this number is not representative. There is only a good studie from Nicholas Yee, but for him the addiction to EQ is important. I am writing my thesis in media sciences, so I have different research interests. That's why I decided to do my own study.
Dread Lord Kaolian, unfortunately I don't know this family, although Marburg is such a small town. I hope you had a good time in Germany. By the way I live in the old part of the town near town hall. Maybe you will find it on your poster map.
Thx a lot for your help,

darknicky

Speaking as a professional in the survey buisness...

Nice instrument. I get what it is you are trying to cover.

As you must know this is NOT a scientific sample as most voluntary surveys of this nature are. I would caution you on making any conclusions based on the answers you get. Your sample frame consists of people enthused enough to actually read a website devoted to THIS game, and be bothered to fill out your questionnaire (I did). I'm sure you are not reaching a LARGE percentage of people or even a representative cross-section who play EQ or these types of games. Having said that, you probably do have other avenues of delivering this questionnaire other than Alla's EQ Forum, and you may even have a questionnaire for other games (I wouldn't have seen since I don't visit those forums.)

You MAY get an over-all feel for how people with the time, money and technical know-how play, but keep in mind who is responding. Still, I WOULD be curious to see how many did respond.

One side note which you were sort of getting at with the EQ creeping into real life:
When I was playing DOOM (First person shooter) I sometimes got the feeling when walking down the street, where the monsters might be or what weapon I had ready (heh). Now I sometimes see people on the street and think about /consider and that they look like an elf or ogre...

Edit.
Not a slam, but this IS a project for educational purposes. So even if this were re-inventing the wheel, we should cut her some slack.

Hi Dothammer,

You mentioned some right difficulties. It is not easy to get an over-all feel for the game. But fortunately I have already more than 3.000 completley filled out questionnaires, I am invited to a real life meeting, I play myself and I have about 10 friends - one is my flatmate - playing EQ.
So I am looking forward to know well the game and the players.
Greetings from Germany and I wish you a nice week,

darknicky
