AFAIK a rating is a rating is a rating. If Nobby rated this post with an awful, it'll have just as much effect as if Kao rated it with an awful with his 8200+ posts.
However, you're right about karma stalling out. Each time you post, you rate yourself at your current karma rating. So if you were to give this post a 0 rating, you've given it one "0" to average in with thousands of "4.42" ratings. In other words, the chance of someone affecting my karma on a global basis is nil.
