I realize I'm still new to EQ, and also to this board, but one thing I just can't figure out is the user rating system on Allakhazam. Based on what I've read I thought I understood it, but then a thread like this one comes along and makes me realize that I just don't get it. To summarize what I see in this thread with regard to user mitchells:

He posted four posts, all dated 4/28/04.
The first post was at 9:44pm; the second and third both at 9:45 pm; and the fourth at 10:02pm.

As of the time of each post he had made a total of 53 posts. It never increases?

His user "score" was the following, as of each post:
1. 1.81
2. 2.75
3. 1.81
4. 2.08

How is this possible? During the minute between 9:44pm and 9:46pm, his user rating changed from 2.75 back down to 1.81? After having changed from 1.81 to 2.75 the minute before?

<shrug> So should I check this out tonight or not? Is he mistaken, or giving us a great heads-up?

Brian those are the ratings for each message, not the user's average.

When you post a message, it's rating starts off with the user's average score to date. Every time the message is rated it updates instantly, and updates the user's average.

In that way a message can go from 1.5 up to 5.0 and back again with plenty of votes. These will chip away at the average.

Hope that makes sense.

Every time you post your post count updates in every post you have ever made. Its a dynamic system. Same with signatures, if you change your signature it changes on every post you have ever made.

Individual posts are rated karmawise. When you make a post it uses your default karma rating, like mine for instance is 3.74 currently. So that is what my base post karma is before anyone rates it. Now for instance if someone that has allot of posts (i.e. significant weighting) rates it up to a 5 that post will go up significantly (lets say 4.9) although my default rating may only change slightly (like 3.75).

The more posts you make the more stagnant your karma becomes and the harder it is to change, both positive or negative. When you have very few total posts your ratings make very little difference against someone who has many posts and vice versa. At least thats what I like to tell myself since my karma of 3.74 hasn't changed in months :)

Thanks for posting to help me to understand the rating process a bit better!

One other thing though. I have always had a rating of 3.00, only having had 27 or 28 posts or so.... But I noticed that my overall rating has (as of this writing) now changed to 2.98. Evidently someone didn't like what I posted somewhere, right? Is there any way to tell what I posted that someone rated me down for?

Is it possible it's my earlier post in this thread? I notice that that particular post shows a rating of 2.75. Do you think that post alone is responsible for my karma going from 3.00 to 2.98? If so, why would someone rate me down for asking questions like the ones I posed in this thread?

I realize this is a minor thing and probably not worth our time discussing, but I'm just curious....

There are people who have taken it as their personal mission to rate down anyone who posts about karma ratings. Smiley: disappointed

Yes

Go to 'Your Account' then 'Your Posts' for a dated list with ratings

AFAIK a rating is a rating is a rating. If Nobby rated this post with an awful, it'll have just as much effect as if Kao rated it with an awful with his 8200+ posts.

However, you're right about karma stalling out. Each time you post, you rate yourself at your current karma rating. So if you were to give this post a 0 rating, you've given it one "0" to average in with thousands of "4.42" ratings. In other words, the chance of someone affecting my karma on a global basis is nil.

The only way to even try to affect someone's Kharma like that is to methodicly go to the beginning page of every forum board and comb through every post ever made by that person.

Not that I did that for that day or two I could rate.

I swear.

Listen, will you get off my back about it?
