A guildie (Level 63 Ranger) and I were talking about tracking last night since I just started a Ranger toon the other day.

I have a macro set so that when I hit my right arrow key, it depresses my Tracking ability key. The first time I hit the RA key in a zone, the tracking window pops up, I minimize it and then go about my business.

He can't seem to believe that I don't have to open and close the tracking window to train up.

So it got me curious. Was there ever a time when you actually had to turn the tracking window on and off to train it?

Um...to the best of my knowledge you have to actually pick a target to track, not just keep the tracking window open, to skill up. Though it's been a *long* time since I've played my ranger, so I dunno.

that will work to skill you up

a way to show this is to leave track window open without picking anything then when track button works again hit it

your mobs will adjust in the window an you will potentially get a skill up

it is like when you hit track you are looking around for tracks and it shows you what you find then when you choose a mob you are picking which to follow

I often do this when I'm just passing through a zone on my way to somewhere else. The tracker acts as a sort of *threat avoidance radar* to let you know if something potentially bad (or a juicey target you don't want to bypass) is nearby. By activating the ability on an already open window, you *ripple the list* re-sorting the order of the mobs by whatever filter you have chosen.

I also use the tracker to keep an eye on other players and NPCs. Helpful when you need to find someone you've lost and for bailing friends out of trouble. (No more /shout WHERE ARE YOU?)

All in all, there is a wealth of information to be obtained from this window... You just have to decide if it's data you want to use!

I've never found tracking to be particularly hard to train, but all you have to do to get a skillup is hit the button. That is the only action with a chance to increase the skill level, and isn't effected by the cancel button or actually tracking a mob.

I maxed my druid's track out in under two hours, from level 40(I saved points to dump into it at 20). The ranger stayed capped at every level from 1, since I was using it almost constantly to hunt Greater Faydark. I never even thought minimizing it, I always just clicked the cancel button. =p

This is how Rangers learn where each mob in a zone spawns and where they like to wander to. Eventually no matter where you are standing you will know what is near you, how far away they are and which way they are headed.

This is how we manage to bow kite in places like Stonebrunt, Dreadlands Burning Woods and Tenebrous Mountains, places where it would normally be too dangerous. Less useful in places like Maidens Eye and The Grey because tracking doesn't help with those bastage mobs that hide underground!!

Sorry, I'm still new to tracking so can I ask a question?

Why is there a need to improve your tracking skills? This sounds like a silly question but the only problem I have noticed is that sometimes I get the message "You have lost what you're tracking." (or something like that). But that has probably happened two or three times max in 10 levels.

Is it going to happen more and more often as I try to track higher level mobs if I don't skill up?

Are there any other problems if I don't skill up as I level up?

Obviously I'm tracking, so my skill will rise, but I just wondered what would happen if I didn't.

Many thanks.

The higher your tracking skill the farther you can effectivly "See" across the zone. With max tracking on my druid I can "see" appx 1/2 to 3/4 of west Karana which means I can track about 75-90% of most other zones.

You do not actually have to "track" a mob to raise the tracking skill just refresh the window. I have mine bound to my forward key so I refresh the window several times a minute.
