Historically there's been a lot on this. Very simply, "plat farming" is the practice of killing green mobs that drop tradeskilling items (such as spider silks, pelts, acrylia), then selling their drops (usually at the bazaar, where you can get better prices than from vendors). You are "farming" rather than "leveling" or exploring" - get it?

That's it in a nutshell. Where's a good place to go? Really depends on your level... Search the forum - it's been brought up MANY times...

indeed it has but on your other point unless yu are a Cleric, wizard or enchanter, horse=bad.

They are only usefull if you are using them for mana regen or are willing to spend 100k+, thats 100.000 pp. and you could buy you char some of the best items in the game for that.

Just to add that there is no need for it to be for tradeskill items. The phrase refers to any activity killing mobs where the exp is negligible or nil and the purpose is making cash.

For example doing Rathe Mountain HGs at 50+ would be plat-farming since you'd only get the odd light blue one.

Everfrost IGs are plat-farming mobs. Rarely will you see anyone doing them for whom they are more than light blue. Gornit is another.

I've been doing the tradeskill mobs like EK Crag Spiders but doing it at 20 where I would get good exp if only I stopped dying. Still even with deaths I can fill a backpack with Spider Silk in an evening. While my primary purpose is getting stuff to sell I think the exp prevents it from being "farming".

And tarv:

I think you are a little harsh on the horse-users. Any mana-using non-melee can benefit. So you could add the other two priest classes and the other two INT casters. A druid might not use it solo but increasingly they find themselves playing the cleric and the horse/lizard is just as good then as for a cleric.

You can melee on horseback and I know one or two knights who do. One remarked that it made it very easy to see if you got hit by the FD proc in PoS. I wouldn't buy a horse for this though, they were using their AA horse. (No not a reformed drunk)

I even know beastlords who use a mount when in "pet-cleric" mode.

Shouldn't that be "I could be bounded by a nutshell and count myself king of infinite space, were it not that I should have bad dreams"?

An alternative to plat farming is selecting a tradeskill and working it. What you make you can sell. If your a caster research can be profitable later on. Until your at a decent level plat farming is hard to do and make any strides in it. Most lower classes live hand to mouth, level to level and spells to spells. Unless of course your not a newbie and playing an alt. or you buy your plat.

I use to pay newbies good money for bonechips. Necro's and Shadowknights use them a lot in thier 30 to 40 levels. So we hose through bone chips, most at that level aren't interested in camping skelly camps. Hook up with a high Necro and offer to farm bone chips for them. For me it was easier to pay than to stop leveling to get chips and I was helping a newbie. Today if I am asked for money I offer this choice. If the person begging turns it down I figure they aren't as new as they say, ambitious as they need to be or not in true need. I don't need bonechips now but I still make the offer to help out others but make them work for it.

I agree that mounts are useful for classes other then cleric, wizard and chanter. My necro has one and if she's not soloing, she's on it. I didn't get the 100k one, because I got it purely for the sitting mana regen/standing aggro feature. Like Cobra said, if you're in a group/raid environment, having a mount can be awesome. Necros are the kings of mana regen, and they're regularly called on to dish it out to other casters. Well, if you can regen mana even quicker by sitting on a mount so you don't take aggro, you're only benefiting the group/raid. My necro is only level 53 though, and I know certain lich spells (ones that turn you into a specter) don't allow you to sit on a mount, but it was a well spent 10k when I got it.

the only thing i need to add id that depending on class you dont need to be 50+ to farm hillgiants in rathe

as a druid i kited them starting at 45 got decent xp and loot while waiting for groups or when i only had 30 minutes or so on before i needed to log ( after work before taking kids to school)

i am 48 now and still get dark to light blue

I started hitting the hill giants at 36 w/ my necro...
I get good exp...
Some druid will be there and will aggro every hill giant there and then root and dot them...
This pisses me off...
I'd like to stick my foot in his *** and see if he could solo them like that...
I know its all "part of the game", but still...

BTW I've made great plat farming at lower lvls, I'm only lvl37 (I think would be considered pretty low)...You'd be surprised what people will pay for spiderling silk (I don't think it drops nearly as often as spider silk, at least not in certain zones)... I'd say I completely own the spiderling silk market on my server, I buy/resell in addition to farming and I keep raising the bar to see what people will pay, and they keep paying it, they never last longer than a night in my satchel, and nobody asks me to drop the price...Foraging is great too, I recently mapped the hotkey to my movement key and it's great, lotta foraged stuff sells great in the bazaar, there was a great post on that topic earlier...

Once you get some scratch together, play the bazaar, get to know the prices of items, people will sell stuff for ridiculously low prices, many people who play EQ might not care about this aspect of the game, but I have fun with it and I've managed to make a good deal of plat at the same time, I put my trader in the bazaar whenever I'm gone, and whenever I come back I always scan the bazaar for items I'm familiar with and sure enough, there'll be four of an item for sale and one of em will be way chepaer than the rest, that's a pretty good indication that you've got a deal on your hands... I picked up two Lamentations for under 1k and a Defiance for 1.2k, and at (at least on my server) that's way cheaper than cheaper than what the average going price is, it boils down to patience, if you see an item you like don't buy it right away, watch the bazaar for a week or so and follow its prices, you'll save a bundle and can make a bundle as well...

I am surprised no one has mentioned my cash source from about level 10 to level 40, Butcherblock Mountains goblins. These Gobbies drop a head and some gobbie blood each selling for near 5pp a piece. They are really easy kills and sometimes they drop one of each. Make sure you are not killing the Aqua goblins though they dont pay as well.

They changed the Butcherblock/Goblin trick...no longer makes nice plat.

It was still working 2 days ago. Only Aqua goblins were nerfed. Green Goblin heads and Blood still make 4.7pp
