I went back to south qeynos to make minataur hero's brew, its the best zone for it. i havent been to qeynos for around two years, my first char was a half elf pally, i stayed in north qeynos hunting till i was lvl 10 (i know i could have zoned into qeynos hills now, but i didnt want to risk getting lost) and havent seen the zone since, between then and now i have got my pally to 44, started a halfling druid and got him to 58 with 6 AAs and half an epic, totally from scratch, thats a long time.

Anyhoo i zoned in and there was a level 2 half elf druid in the zone i did /shout hello <whatever her name was>, no reply, i tried ooc and then tried tell, no reply, obviously afk, running to my brewing point i saw her, hailed her and <whatever> says "hail dracoid", she had obviously typed hail and didnt know that the H key does it, maybe this was a veteran player pretending, but something told me she wasnt. The not replying in ooc and tells must have been because she didnt know how, maybe i spend to much of my time in relatively high lvl zones and pok, but i realised i hadnt spoke to a real newbie for ages, we were standing outside sneed galliways trading post, which i remember selling snake skins at and making my first plat! thats like 10 gold, man i was loaded, i had 15 plat on me so i gave it to her, <whatever her name is> says "WOW".

I sprinted to the south qeynos zone line, the thought of anonymous strangers hading out colossal sums of money and running away (i was pretty sure she didnt know how to speak to someone if they wernt face to face) and sure enough i didnt get a tell about it the whole evening, i can imagine a level 50 druid a year from now thinking, i wonder who that stranger was that gave me 15pp when that was a fortune to me, wish i could remember their name. After that i strted thinkin about my newbie days, i remember going just inside the qeynos gates and seeing an elf (i didnt know what sort, but im pretty sure wood elf now) sitting cross-legged and floating, bouncing up and down, that amazed me and i instantly wanted to get my charecter to a high level so that i could do it some day. Another distinct newb memory was running around qeynos hunting gnolls and snakes and the like, an anonymous stranger came up to me (im pretty sure this was before i discovered /tell because i remember wishing i could contact them after they left, gave me an ice paw war claw, i didnt understand the stats, the damage or the delay, but i do remember thinking i was uber, i no longer had a sword but a claw! oh man i was excited. I now make regular trips to qeynos and freeport to hunt down real newbs and give out 10-20pp, so much fun to see their reactions!

Anybody else do this? Anybody remember their first twink?

I personally love to spend time in blackburrow. Running into the depths of the zone to find somebody sitting in between two armys of gnolls with 10% health and giving them my modest buffs and watching them regain hope that they can get out of there again is always rewarding. It has a lot less twinks and jerks in it than PC does, therefore it makes me feel like I'm actually helping somebody. I was actually overjoyed one day when I was doing this, and after I buffed somebdy up they said,
"I just clicked on that stuff and it disappeared, was that supposed to happen?"

I tried this ic PC a couple of days ago, and everyone seemed a little peeved that I was bothering them.

I would love to do this in the Warrens but I've never seen a soul in there...go figure.

Being a newbie myself, I just have to say a great big "THANKS!" to those, like you, who help us out when we least expect it.

I always try to make sure to send a tell to the person if I can catch their name to say a quick "thanks !". I can't wait until the days when I am upper level and am able to return the favors to newbies myself !

I used to give away all sorts of various newbie junk. Heck, I used to go out of my way to hit Runnyeye or Stonebrunt and collect Blackened Alloy or Cold Iron armor just to give away. Truth be told, it's just too hard these days to get anyone interested in it for me to bother. /Shouting for 40min that you have stuff, just to have someone already half twinked, grab a piece and run off (or maybe say "thx") gets old in a hurry.

That said, I had an amusing conversation the other night. I was slapping an augment into some new boots at the birdbath in the EC tunnel when some halfling ran up to me.
Halfing: "Are you a nice person?"
Me: "I'd like to think so. Define 'nice'."
Halfing: "Friendly, fun to talk to, willing to help..."
Me: "Sure."
Halfing: "Can I add you to my friends list? I don't have anyone on there."
Me: "So long as you're not angling for handouts or platinum. Are you new?"
Halfing: "Yes."
Me: "Well, I have to run, but if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a tell."
Halfing: "Thanks!"

I never heard from her, so I don't know how sincere she was or if she was trying to take me for a ride. Still, was an amusing conversation.

but then it wouldnt suprise ya and wouldnt be fun, and anyway your not a proper newbie, one that dosent know that H is hail and T is tell hehe, but i have helped out people as high as 40 (someone in nadox the other day struggling for XP, so i let them come with me for a solo trip to nadox and they go taround 3 bubs in a tenth of the time it would have taken them solo, thats always great too, helping anyone in EQ hwo si lower level than you is always a great feeling, at lvl 20 you can go to qeynos and hand out 5pp to REAL newbs, much fun

NE suburbs. Actually, close to the Wisconsin border. About 10-15 minutes from Great Lakes Naval Training Center.

That's funny, but it makes me wonder if that was my fiancee... she was just complaining to me the other day how she had nobody on her friends list. I told her to find a group and put the few that aren't crazy on her list, but she didn't want to group. I'll have to ask if she's doing drive by friends list adds.

Off topic also, but I guess now it's on topic... I lived in Chicago myself for a while. Once off of Lawrence and Western, and then up by Loyola University off of sheridan (another little baby child is born..in the ghettoooo)

Sort of off topic, but since making Hero's brew came up I wanted to mention that Halas is also a great place for that. There's one building with 3 brewing merchants and a barrel. The merchants sell everything you need for Mino Hero's brew and they're about 3 steps away from the barrel. Might be the same in Qeynos though, I never tried it there.

Oh, and how the heck does one get to level 10 in North Qeynos? Seems like all the mobs turn green by level 5 there.

On the topic of helping newbies, I like to take my 44 shammy to the newbie zones and set up my own little healing/buffing station. It always puts a big grin on my face when I can drop a couple hundered extra hitpoints, a regen, and a bunch of stat buffs on a lowbie and watch them go nuts killing everything around with their *short swords and *daggers.

TY oneprime, ill check that out, you have to run between two building in qeynos, theyre only about 10yards away from each other but TY

and my secret to levelling to 10 is - only kill the hardest named gnoll when he spawns and kill klicknik nobels, and i think the king is blue aswell, took me a few hours to do it (terrible i know) but i was seriously pleased with myself, but dreaded the prospect of having to move zones or loot my corpse (wasnt sure if other people could loot it aswell as me, didnt want to lose my precious warclaw, and i had only EVER been in north and south qeynos in my whole week or two playing time).

I frequently go to Greater Faydark and set up Blitz's buffs for Batwings... but lately, I've been doing a trivia contest. I offer 10pp for answers to my questions. Tells only, level 20 or below. If they are twinks, then I say they can only win once per day. I've had people complain about now knowing the answers, and ask how I could afford to just give away 10pp. I tend to drop 100p or so in their trade window if they're convincing. I ask all sorts of questions-- like what is the name for the city most people refer to as PoK (New Tanaan)-- page 544 of the atlas, i think... or Name a popular TV show from the 1950's (I Love Lucy is most popular answer LOL)

Anyways, I look for newbies to help, and will even help beggars sometimes. I don't just give the beggars money, I ask them to farm spider silks or forage vegetables for me. There are times when the trivia game is a bust and there are times when I find myself short 200 p in less than 30 minutes... Try it sometime :)

If you really want to help a newbie get going in the game, stop what you are doing when you meet one, create a suitable newbie alt and group with them for a few days.

You may find a life long friend!

Fun stuff...

Reminds me when I first started, a fledgling woodelf bard. I knew next to nothing, trying to kill wasps in Gfay newbie area and some PC pops up my trade window and gives me 2 rings, and 2 earrings, one was a silver bloodstone. Junk stat jewelry to be sure, but I remember when I died in Crushbone at level 10, I just HAD to get that earring back!

Now, when my enchanter was skilling up in jewelry, I handed out Jaded electrum bracelets to 'level 9 and under' if they were first to answer some quiz question or gave me a spiderling silk.
(Free Breezes too!)

Likewise when I was making tailored quivers for Tailoring. Every level 10 bow user got a free one...

If anyone looked suspiciously twinked, I would give them a hard time but usually ended up giving them stuff anyway.

Just giving back...

I have done that, well i didnt creat a new toon, but i spent around week with them, was more of a project than the kind of help i was talking about, still fun though, plus it takes AGES, and part of the fun of dropping 15pp and zoning is knowing that they will think "i wonder who that guy was" when they are higher, and with the type of help you mentioned they will remember you, and you may discover they are a really bad person, but even if the newbies i help are idiots, i will never know, i can imagine theyre exactly like me and never have to learn the truth.

I love threads like this because it shows what a huge impact such a small gesture can have on a newbie. Every once in a while I go back to Blackburrow, where I leveled my first character, a Druid, and did a lot of his mewbie armor and weapon quests. I sit at the entrance, floating like a god, or in wolf form, and /ooc buffs. If, upon inspection, I see that the people are using rusty weapons and leather armor, I hand out whatever I have to them. I remember when people did this for me and it was truly awe-inspiring at the time. To a character in thier 40's or above its a few mana bubbles and some vendor trash, but when I was a newb it made me think I was on my way to greatness. Its fun to return the favor.

Isnt half of the fun knowing that people are amazed at how kool you are? Even though getting a dru to lvl 19 to get lev and kill a bat isnt the hardest of challenges, i ALWAYS have lev, to make myself look cooler, hehe

1) take 100pp out of bank
2) cast lev
3) run to qeynos gates or BB entrance of PoD lift in GFay or wherever im gonna be twinkin
4) summom drogmor
5) wait for the newbs to come so you can hail em, give me SoW and skin like nature and 10pp and just generally look cool.

If i started a lvl 1 toon and transfered 100pp onto him the event nowhere near as fun to me, the best part is still seeing the newbies reactions though hehe

Sometimes when I am in wolf form, conning red, they start to run from me until I hail them...just like I did the first time I saw someone in wolf form. When I found out he was a Druid too and I was going to be able to do that - whoah! I think I stayed up all night playing after that.

I like to enter a Newbie zone and setup a triage center of sorts...
I send out an /OOC stating that heals and buffs are free for those under level 10.
Then the line starts to form, and eventually the newb's like to try and hand me items as a donation so I start to ask them to leave them on the ground near me. Once the items start to acrue I start telling them to donate if oyu can but please feel free to help yourself if you can use an item.

Once I start rollin it can be pretty tough on the mana so luckily I have a DeepWater Helm, BreastPlate and Greives so the buffs are all clicky.

It turns into a social event and the lower levels get a chance to really advance their XP.

I would recomend trying this, it can be very rewarding in a non XP or Plat way..hehe

Yeah, I actually had someone offer me 3 copper when I was doing my buffing rounds at blackburrow yesterday. If I wouldn't have been completely broke I would have taken the 3 copper and gave hima lot more money.
I like a lot of the ideas here I'm going to give some a try, like the give plat and dash and the trivia.
How many times has it backfired on you though? I was in blackburrow about a month ago and saw a lone guy in the middle of it, so being bored I sat down to keep him healed up. We started to get a little arrogant though and I told him to go take on Lord Elgnub, well I went oom and burned a lay hands trying to let him get the exp and Elgnub started to run. The guy went chasing after him and I didn't have mana to root or stun so I went running ahead to med and wait for him. So up over the hill comes the guy and the entire elite guard room and then like half of blackburrow.
I'm trying to smack the gnolls and taunt them off of him and he just drops like a rock.
D'oh!
I ended up rezzing the guy and giving him some sow potions, cloudy potions and then finished off elgnub and let him loot the baby.
I guess that's the downside to the whole thing, I ended up helping him out anyways... but he probably thinks I'm a total nutjob.

Whenever I find a real, live newbie that's really new to the game (I haven't found that many) I always dump stuff and advice on them. A few months back I met a Barbarian Berserker who was very new and I gave her some things, as did a friend of mine, and I spent about 5 hours helping her level (I have a problem saying "I'm done helping now"). I wonder where she is now, I hope she still plays. Usually I'll approach anyone who is low level and not dressed well, say hi, and see how new they are. Unless they beg me for help, that's the best way to annoy me. I think I'll go look for a newbie to help now.

Edit:
I just remembered the one guy I tried to help that was a jerk. He was a DE Necro but didn't know about spells or trainers or anything. I gave him some money, and told him to follow me to the town, and explained how /follow worked. After a while, he called me an "*******" and left. Not sure how I made him mad, but that guy upset me. I told him to either shape op or quit the game, we're stocked full of jerks already...

Well I read this thread and wanted to introduce myself.
I played EQ right when it released but had ATI hardware conflicts forever it seemed and I finally gave up. I played Daoc from beta for a few years and beta tested and played Shadowbane, then moved onto the lineage2 betas.
After reading up what I could find on EQ2 I bought EQ Evolution and have started to play. Man what a feeling to be such a newby again! A LOT of things have changed since release and I am excited about playing. I felt pretty stupid after wandering for a hour trying to get out of the starter city to what I eventually found by dying that I ended up in a hallway that went to paineel.Looting seems pretty simple though I haven't figured out the link all thing yet and am dropping each item one by one into the auto equip area.
LoL here's a good one I finally figured out that when trying to look for items that I knew had to be in my backpack that it was opening behind the tips box.I felt like a first grader, but have made it into lvl 2. I didn't know one server from the next and chose the one with ZEB in the name.
If anyone on that server or another feels like or has the time/kindness for some crash course they would be truly appreciated. I don't have a lot to offer some skeleton parts and rat pieces and a cracked staff, but any help would be appreciated. So if you feel like helpin a true newbie who isn't a bad guy or a griefer type let me know.
Even though they don't have a EQ chapter I have been in a guild called The Defenders of Order (an honor based guild) for quite a while we are a multigaming guild with Daoc/SB/Lineage2/Horizons chapters and a good bunch of people.
Well enough rambling If you feel like givin a crash course or even some handy tips all would be appreciated I am quite excited about playing and experiencing EQ that I missed out on in the past due to buying a Rage Fury (ATI video card) instead of going Nvidia from the start.
/SALUTES to you all

OHHH I so remember! I was so lost, in GFay, and some awesome druid cast SoW on me. I thought that was the best thing ever :) I actually was a very fortunate newb..I had a few people help me. I had one guy take me on my first trip to the bazaar and buy me bout 200pp worth of things (of course I didn't know that at the time). It rocked, bought me a good hammer and some wisdom items. With me being a druid that was very helpful.
I also was playing in DSP and had a guy come up and give me a book for my secondary slot (can't think of the name). It is awesome and I still use it :). Though at level 53 I am probably due for something better lol.

Great thread, oh the good ol days.

I try to do some drive by buffs when I can, but I don't ever seem to find the true newbs....so I get the ones who are like oh yay Sow gee thanks....lol

My first character was the recommended warrior who never made it past level seven. But she was given hand-made patchwork armor at level 3 or so by a 27 ranger that looked like a God at that point in time <g>. He taught me how to fish and patiently explained how to tell a good weapon from a bad one. I will never forget the day he caught me hunting with a Splintered Club and carefully explained why I was too good to use such a weapon. He made (good) fun of the fur hat I was wearing and then began to patiently answer my second character's questions when I bothered him again. She is probably the saddest bard in all of Norrath, but I sure have had fun with her and will never forget my kind benefactor. I still hold my very first piece of banded armor in my bank (shoulder slot) made, also, by him for my little bard and I try to be as kind in my travels. Of course, I have my bad days too, sorry to all in the path of one of those :).

I still remember way back when when Cafeen was a little baby enchanter, I helped a big troll in Neriak do the Red Wine quest. In return, he bought me enough wine to max out all the factions, AND gave me a pair of Drake-Hide Leggings. These were great and I wore them up into my 50s (could never find another pair of pants without sacrificing the CHA on those until I got a pair of Dreadfangs Hide, then the Petrified from LDoN (when I stopped really caring about that 5 CHA)). Like many people, I only wish I would have written the guy's name down so I could have thanked him later. (Of course I thanked him then too, but that's beside the point).

Commonly I'll run through one of the newbie zones and pass out buffs to whoever comes near me. C + clicky haste for casters, and just clicky haste for melees. It's a great thing giving back the kindness I received as a little baby enc. Occasionally I'll give out some items too if my bank is getting full, or some plat if I'm in a good mood, but I do try to make it fun for me (and work for them ;))

/em fondly remembers running around nekultos feeling powerful because he had a full set of raw silk on. Every slot full was uber :)
