Giving up a character?Follow

#1 Apr 26 2004 at 2:05 PM Rating: Decent
Now with a slight role change in jobs, I really won't have time to play EQ anymore. This is my first and only character and didn't want to just drop him after getting almost to level 42. Do players ever give away characters or sell off their accounts? Not sure if this is the place to ask, but any feedback is appreciated.

Yes they do but, to be honest, a lvl 42 character wouldn't bring in $5. The ones that sell are the lvl epic'd lvl 65's with 300AAXP anf EP flags or whatever.

Your best bet it to just cancel the account. Should you ever find yourself able to play again, it'll be nice to be able to reactivate the account and find your old self twirling around, safe as ever.

Most likely won't happen, but I guess I can just cancel. I figure there's someone out there who is just starting up a necro in my field and this can just give them a bit of a boost instead of going through everything if they have some specific goal.

I, too, said that I would never come back to EQ. And here I am. :) It was very nice to have all of my old characters still available.

If you do decide to play EQ again, I'm sure you would appreciate having your 42nd level character still accessable even if you decide to start a new one over.

Just a thought cause I've been there. :)

You could also do what I did for my daughter. She found that she didn't have a lot of time to play with work, school, marriage and a baby on the way. So instead of paying SoE money every month (it adds up) she gave all her items on all her characters to me. I set up a mule on my account and sold what she did not want to hold on to. Now unless I quit playing before she decides to get back into it, she has items and starting money with which to get back in the game.

Now, if you don't have that ability, just sell all your items and hand out to "real" newbies on your server, (not twinked and you can usually tell the difference).

Good Luck to you!

Actually, a REALLY smart idea is to sell all your gear and just hold the plat!

The point of this is that the value of items drop and a year from now you'll be able to buy better gear with the same money. Also, a year from now the same gear will not only be worth less, but be a lot less effective(compared to the more recent gear). Also keep in mind that SOE has been trying to stabilize the economy. If what SOE is doing WORKS, there will be less plat in the world also making it WORTH more.

In LordBracus's example, what he is doing is good as his daughter will have gear to come back to. However, if she's off EQ for a year, chances are fair that she'll need to upgrade and won't have the funds to do that unless she has cash on the side as well. Even having cash on the side she won't get near what she paid for her old gear. If all the gear is sold and she gets say 50K(just throwing out a number), a year later she'll be able to buy better gear for the same cash. It would almost be as if her cash were earning interest as it would be able to buy 75k-100k worth of today's gear. As I said, if SOE's plans work, it will even be more like 200k or better(since draining plat makes it worth more, the value will rise even faster than item values will disintegrate).

Just as a final note, I'm a wiz with plat in the bazaar and have earned a great deal of cash so I do know what I'm talking about. Especially since I myself quit for well over a year, then switched servers BEFORE they allowed you to move with gear and I lost everything.

Bottom line, if you're gonna quit, sell everything and try to get a fair market value for it. Let your character keep nothing but NO DROP items and plat, then if you ever come back you'll be able to get right back into the game with reasonable gear.

well, thats a gamble.

imagine, you come back naked and don't have enough money to buy a thing as the economy changed dramatically. and, the hazzle you have to go through with buying, haggling, comparing prices etc...

naw, just hold on to the gear and cancel the account. so when you come back (if!) you have a playable toon.

on a sidenote: we are not allowed to discuss the selling/buying of accounts here on Alla, so please check certain ressources.

Good Luck Smiley: smile

No offense, but how long have you been playing? Anyone who has been playing any reasonable amount of time knows the trend items take price-wise. A few years ago GEBs(Golden Efreetie Boots) had cost 10k as did the FBSS(Flowing Black Silk Sash). A SSoY(Short Sword of the Ykesha) used to cost 1500pp+. Today GEBs can be had for under 2k, FBSS under 1k and SSoY for 50pp! Those three items were once concidered the "best" many players could hope to own and were out of reach to many. Just about all items go through this trend as new items come out.

As long as we are "imagining" though, imagine you come back and you have a full suit of NO DROP GM armor, or 72Mpp! I'm talking about facts of the EQ economy, not quesses, wishes, or could be's. The fact is, anyone who has quit for a year or more has come back to find all their high level gear on newbies!! And I'm not talking twinks/alts, I'm talking real newbies! If they actually sold everything, they would have been a LOT better off than having held the cash and that's a FACT!

As I also said, SOE is trying to take plat out of the economy with the Casino and the Tribute system. The effect that will have is to make items worth less and plat worth more. That means that 10k will be able to buy more later than it can now.

The ONLY time this doesn't all ring true is when there is a plat exploit. With a flood of plat into the system prices rise quickly and to stupid levels. Anyone playing during the past year is familiar with what the plat exploit did to the economy. Prices do stabalize afterwards though and then the trend stated above continues.

A gamble? I don't think so. I've been playing the EQ economy a long time, long enough to know how it works. Your gear isn't going to be becoming worth more any time soon, Less? Yes. Btw, feel free to look at my gear, I've got 2Mpp+ into my characters and I didn't buy any plat, E-bay, or trade-skill. I earned all my plat through trading. Besides, anyone playing any reasonable length of time sees the trend themselves.

to Sir KerikDaven:

well, first of all my apologies, I should've added "in my opinion" to my first post.

naw, no offence taken, it's about posting opinions here, innit? Smiley: smile

correct, am not playing for a long time, only 5 months now.

how would that make a difference though? I don't need EQ to know, that nobody is able to project anything, when it comes to economy questions. That's just common sense. what is the impact of the launch of e.g. WOW or EQ2? plat exploits, as you said? can you say for sure how that will drive prices up/down? any other factors? Server behaviour, subscriber base?

everytime somebody says, that he can foresee anything for sure with data from the past, he is wrong me thinks. you can only assume.

I agree with you though, that it is more likely (!) that he benefits if he sells it now. but going through all the hazzle... even selling can be a time consuming job as you know - am doing a bit of trading (buy/sell) myself to support my pally...

I've got to side with Sir Kerik on this one.

In the real world you're right, you can't predict with much accuracy what the ecomony is going to do. Trends come and go, advances in technology make things obsolete, while other technological advances fail completely. It's also a system of supply and demand with no real outside control of the markets(if you listen to shows like Coast to Coast AM, you might disagree with that point, but I digressSmiley: grin).

Everquest however, is not a standard economic model. Advances/upgrades in equipment never fail, because they're programmed to be better. With rare exceptions there is only one trend and that is towards the gear with the best stats, as this is a stat based game(I've yet to see anyone go,"Ooooh, look. Soandso is using a BABS. That is sooo retro. I'm going to get one myself"). And the biggest reason that Sir Kerik is right here is that everquest has a controlling entity, SOE who control the market to a certain degree, releasing better items, making current and older items less valuable, and taking steps to remove platinum from the economy, making your saved PP that much more valuable.

While there are always exceptions to the rule(prenerfed CoS is one that comes to mind), you'll be much further ahead if you sell your items, then hold the platinum for if/when you decide to return.Smiley: grin
