Is it worth doing the Claw quest
The answer has to be "It depends".
The end reward is certainly not anything to get excited about and having a Sonic-wolf bane weapon is not that useful unless you will be fighting sonic wolves a lot.
However doing it as an expression of your Vah Shirness is certainly good in my book.
When you start it is about cloaks and upgrading from Recruit to Apprentice. You also need significant tradeskills or you will kick yourself. Farming the components needed for the claw combine and failing it is extremely frustrating. And tailoring (the TS allotted to the Khati Sha) is a pain to raise at low level. I was lucky enough to have the GoD expansion and popped over to Abysmal Sea to raise it to 54 at which point you have an excellent chance of succeeding in the combine.
I strongly ~ecommend visiting www.EQTraders.com to look at ways of raising your skill on the damaged hopperhide etc that you find on the thicket. The dilemma for young characters is whether to sacrifice the silks and hides they get in skilling or to sell them for significant money in the bazaar.
After the initial combine you have to start killing Sonic Wolf pups on the Moor. This is not really doable until you are around 12 ish. At least on MR we do not have people rigging the Holloshade War continually to farm Owlbears or Acrylia.
Ultimately it gets extremely difficult as it depends on rare drops from unlikely mobs. How far you take it is up to you. I would certainly want to go as far as the recruit claws.
My whole family of characters is centred on Shah Vahl and if we bump into you we may have a weapon or some armour for a young beastlord.
You have picked a hard place to start as there are no new-style ,"newbie armour" quests for the traditional classes - only Berserkers. I can recommend the Ghulam Armour quests and the hopper scale quests given out by the Tauruun (rogue) trainer in Shadeweaver. Also a must-do is the Whisperling Quest which starts in Shadeweaver and is doable at your level. A bit later do the quest for the Blessed Champions Cloak.
