If you want a newbie server go to Morden Rasp.

That's the youngest server there currently is.

A fun class that is not too item dependent? Hmmm, depends on what you consider fun :-) Druid would probably be a good bet - the class you pick is really determined on how you want to play.

Over and out,

Not item dependant? I'd say monk, it basically forces you too use less stuff because of the low weight limit.

Also good is beastlord. Even if you die and need to CR it's easily possible to just pet cleric. Items are the icing on the beastlord cake - at least if you don't want to melee with your pet :)

Naked necros and mages are still pretty powerful provided you can afford to buy spells and you keep a good supply of bone chips/gems so you can summon your pet.

I have to agree with Monk. It's not because of the weight restrictions, though. Monks bare handed are very effective. They get good skills and special abilities and don't need 255 in all stats to work well.

You are restricted to 2 races though. Don't know if that matters to you or not.

If you are low on funds, I, personally, would stay away from casting classes like Beastlord and Druid. Gear + Spells = not a lot of plat. :)

Can't offer an opinion on servers since I have only been exposed to one.

Monks aren't wanted in groups as much now with the FD nerf. Seems bards are the best pullers now with fading memories AA, great pacify spells, and 65% slow spell to put on before the shaman/ench can do it. Monks also have had a melee damage nerf from what I hear. Better to go with Beastlord.

Beastlord spells are pretty cheap compared to pure casters. Even the spells in the high 50's that can be bought in PoK are almost never more than 10 pp. And we have very few spells that can't be bought somewhere; until the PoP spells, the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Spirit of Snow and Spirit of Flame, both very rare Luclin drops that sell for a few thousand plat each in the bazaar when they are actually there. They're great spells, but many Beastlords go without them because of their rarity/price.

Game on,

I'd have to say bards are by far the most powerful class when gear is taken out of the equation. There are a few exceptions with the songs (invis for instance), but for the most part, you don't even need instruments. My bard chant kited a sand giant in the Oasis solo when he was only level 31, naked, while on a corpse run to the Timorous Deep. It took a while, but he did it and didn't get hit once. As most people know though, it takes a lot of work to be a "good" bard verses an "ok" bard.

the only class that fits that bill is a bard.

all a good played bard needs is a good drum, wind instroment, string, and brass item.

give them an ok sword, some semi ok armor and tad amount of INT and CHA you are set.

heck a bard with a nice drum(walrus, MM, TDoK (very pricy, but way hella nice drum for a bard) tanborine(sp?) quest item, etc), store brass, wind, string instroment with nothing more then banded armor (bronze even if you want the extra weight) 1hs and 1hb weapon would be set until mid 50s as long as his int was 120ish (higher = better) and cha is over 100.

heck with less then 2k you could get all of that equipment and set them up in full lambent. old old school armor, but hey better then banded, and does not cost a lot of coin. most of that 2k will go to your drum.

[edit to add] all casters are dependent extreemly heavy on INT/WIS gear. without thier primary casting stat over 200 they are mega gimped, then you also take away all their mana+ gear and you are talking between 60-80% of their total mana pool is gone.

i know with crud for gear on my 60th nec i would lose 60-70% of my mana by going from FM nekkid (CR) to full gear and be sitting at 30-40% mana. that is mega gear dependent. any pure caster will go OOM without their gear in a normal fight in the 40+ level range. and most will go OOM in their 30s without gear.

as for monk. without all that STA and HP+ gear, not to mention AGI gear they are dead meat.

Any caster is also a good choice as they are basically balanced by their spells. Pet casters as expected have the edge. After paying for spells you could go without items. I don't recommend going without items, but you could. Cheap focus effect stuff can be had till after you hit lvl 44.

I have to support Jiggydjay on this one... Bards! A good portion of most casters' mana (and regen at higher levels) comes from their equipment. The vast majority of bard songs don't even use any mana. That can be a big advantage. But beyond that, when you're talking long term, all a bard really needs is a decent drum. Not even a great or even a very good drum, just a decent one.

Though I don't play him anymore, I got my beastlord to level 30 in under a week soloing, and wearing leather armor and polished steel ulaks.

Pure caster classes like magicians, druids, and necromancers can get overwelming in spell costs, though I don't know if that matters to you. I was always very disgruntled to pay 300 or more platinum for my level 24 spells. Pure melees require respectable equipment and somewhat often upgrades to stay effective.

Bards are a bit too much work for my tastes, but if you've got a knack for it you can get to level 50 in 30 hours played with some area effect kiting.

In the end I still suggest beastlords, just because of their near total independency from any uber equipment, and very cheap spell costs. I kind of drifted off from them due to their ridiculous popularity on my server but they can still be one of the most fun classes in the game.
