I am a level 5 ranger(wood elf)and have been playing EQ for about a week and a half. Needless to say, it's very overwhelming, but also DANGEROUSLY addicting :-) What I need help with is combining items. How do you know what to combine? Is it a hit or miss type thing, or are there "recipes" you buy? Also, how do I learn to fish, sew, make armor etc? I am assuming that you need to talk to the right NPC's to find out what you need, but any general info/tips that might make it easier for me to learn would be greatly appreciated.

www.eqtraders.com is a great resource for the recipes.

The premium service here on Alla is good too, but EQtraders does a better job of explaining some of the stuff.

To make it simple...

You need the proper container.
Open the container and put the items in it.
Hit combine.
You either fail, succeed or you had the recipe wrong.

Many of the web sites have recipes and if you look up the item on allakhazam that you wish to make it should give you the recipe. You need to put a training point into the skill you want to advance. Ex. fishing throw a skill into that and then you simple need to start practicing that skill.

Ex. Jewelry making...1 point, purchase level one ingredients a jewelers bad and begin to combine and advance your skills. Click on tradeskills here in allakhazam and read about it.

EQ is overwhelming and many people are more than willing to help you learn. Keep asking you will find many are nice and polite.

I'm not an expert at ranging skills - but after that absolutely diabolical response, feel bound to put finger to keyboard.

I tend to use allakhazam - recipes - trade skill search and look for fletching I suppose would be appropriate for a ranger - if you do it nicely you get a list of all the "recipes" available to a ranger - explore and have fun...

As for that guy who responded to you originally, jeez what a jerk - I apologise - there is a small minority of ar&*^oles - I'm afraid you happened to bump into one of them.

Eq traders is also good by the way - worth a visit - but I still prefer allakhazam :)

Have fun .... I'm sure I'm falling for a troll - but never mind...

Thank you to all of you willing to offer advice. I'll try eqtraders, but so far, I've liked Allakhazam the best out of all the sites I've visited.

Trunks...I tend to avoid asking "how to" general questions while in game and would rather do it here so as not to annoy people with a short fuse for newbies who are trying to play the game.

Also, I know that on the EQtrader message boards there are FAQs for each skill. Many of those should be able to answer your basic questions.

One word of warning about tradeskills. They are demanding and expensive if you get hooked. The return is seldom worth the expense.

Since you are a Ranger I would recommend starting with fletching. It is relatively cheap to begin and you will use a LOT of arrows as you level up. The ones you make are almost always better and cheaper than what you can buy. You can also carry more arrows in component form than you can finished arrows so you can make them as you go and save inventory space.

To make arrows you will need to buy a fletching kit. Once you have that you need to find a merchant who sells arrow components (there should be one near your guild). You need to buy some field point arrowheads, wooden arrowshafts, round cut fletchings, and large groove nocks. Put one of each of those in your fletching kit and hit the combine button.

This is the easiest combine you can perform but you can still fail it and destroy the components. If you succeed you will get 5 arrows. You might also gain a skill point. Skill points will come fairly fast at first but will slow down later. The higher your skill the fewer times you will fail.

If you like doing that you will want to look at other tradeskills too. I would also recommend EQtraders.com for that. Alla's is a great site but EQtraders just does tradeskills better since that's all they do.

Trunks is a meat pickle. I wouldn't worry about him.

Fletching is a natural choice for ranger tradeskilling. Another route to consider is tailoring (along with fletching, not in lieu of). As a ranger, you'll probably spend your fair share of time kiting animals and tailoring gives you something productive to do with the pelts you'll be collecting. Also, tailoring will allow you to make some nice quivers later on which will add to your archery speed. Finally, tailoring uses Dexterity as one of its skill checks. Since rangers like to collect Dex gear anyway (for archery skillups), it's nice to have a ready set of equipment at hand to help you skill up tailoring as well.

I saw this thread right after you posted but I was about to shut my rig down and leave for work so I didn't respond. Now I'm sorry I didn't have time then. It would have avoided your 1st contact being a negative one. Sorry friend. Now that I have that off my chest, on to my comment ...

With the new tradeskill interface, things are even easier than as detailed by Wayen. To begin, all you have to do is left click on the location (like an oven or blacksmith's forge), or right click on a container like a sewing kit or mixing bowl.

When the interface opens, click on the *search recipes* button and a list will come up that is geared to your level of ability. select a recipe and the UI will display the nessessary ingredients in a panel on the right. Those items that are outlined in green are currently present in your inventory. Those outlined in red are not. Simple! Assuming that all the stuff you need is all there, hit the combine button and one of two things will happen.

1) the finished item will *land* on your cursor -or-
2) you will fail to make a successful combine and lose the ingredients.

If you succeded, click on the *auto inventory* button, (located right below combine), and the item will drop into your inventory. If anything else is returned from the combine (like a frying pan or a smith's hammer) it will also land on your cursor and can be auto inventoried next.

There is also a button that will allow you to highlight a recipe and add it to a list of favorites. These favorites can be displayed at any time so you don't have to always weed through the list to find the combines you frequently make.

The only frustrating thing is that the UI won't display things that are way beyond your current ability so you can't get a look at what you'll be able to do in the future. (Did that make any sense?)

However, you can see what lies ahead by checking out EQtraders as has been mentioned by others in this thread.

There is also an *experiment* option where you can do things the old fashioned way but where's the fun in that!

Hope that description was clear and made some kind of sense...

And one more thing... server permitting, (I'm on Morden Rasp), I would be happy to duo with you sometime. I currently play a ranger and a bard and since I'm also a new player, neither is all that much higher level than your guy.

Good luck and good hunting...

OldBlueDragon - Thanks so much ! The tip:

"When the interface opens, click on the *search recipes* button and a list will come up that is geared to your level of ability. select a recipe and the UI will display the nessessary ingredients in a panel on the right. was extremely helpful :-) I'm on The Seventh Hammer, but if I ever venture over to Morden Rasp, I'll send you a tell...

I also got a chance to check out eqtrader earlier and it was also very informational. Thanks to all for the reference to try there.

I don't see that any one else has mentioned the recipe books that you can buy in game.

Some of the merchants who sell specific tradeskill components also sell the books. These are where all the original information about tradeskills came (and still comes) from.

As others have mentioned you can go to eqtraders for very easy walkthroughs and guides and you get many of the basic recipes in the new tradeskill containers.

However it is still fun to buy some of the books and see if you can figure out the recipes for yourself. It also gives a feeling of some respect for the people who originally managed to figure it all out from scratch Smiley: smile

As I recall the guide to fletching and bowmaking can be bought from the fletching supply merchants in Kelethin. These are not quite so cryptic and you will be able to make combines from them. The cooking merchants in the huts outside the entrance to Kaladim sell several cook books, these are a bit more challenging, but still fun to have a look at, to see what it was like to trying to figure them out to begin with.

Okay the following are the 2 best websites in their order.

www.eqtraders.com and of course in here Allakhazam's.
I use them both as each has its own merits regarding tradeskills.

Old Blue and others have covered most of what else I would have said. Nice presentation.

Combining just means you have to have 2 or more ingredients to put in a certain type container to make either a sub item or an ending result item.

Example:
Frost Temper (make in a brew barrel)
1 Brandy
1 Ice Goblin Blood
2 Essence of Winter

This would be a combine or recipie which is just one part of several parts needed to make 1 piece of Helanic Tundra Armor.

There are thousands of recipies (combines) in every skill.

Tradeskills are very demanding and you will learn patience doing them. Just one suggestion would be read about the various choices in tradeskills and start out with an easy one first, master it, and then move onto a little harder one. If you want an easy one try brewing to get your feet wet.

Hope this helps,

To all those who had to suffer trunks's resonce we in OoT appologise. Flames should be directed to Skeeter.

www.Eqtraders.com is the site to go to if your interested n tradeskils, the new patch has made tradeskills much easier and in the long run slightly more fun.

it is a long and painful road to travel but some of the items at the high end are pretty awesome and for a newbie like yourself the low end stuff is still an upgrade, beside making your own arrows is cheaper in the long run.

if you prefer there are books you can buy of NPC's in the game that list recipies, as a wood elf you will find many in the kelethin tree city. If memory serves the fletchers with the books are near the warrior guild.

here is a simple breakdown of the basic tradeskills for you.

Tailoring: leather class armour, uses pelts of various animals

Smithing: Chain and plate class armour, uses vendour bought metals at low levels, banded armour would be a good route for you to go for a ranger and it is not all that expencive to make if you use the rusty weapons that drop to turn into the sheets you need <details on EQtraders>

Fletching: Make your own arrows and at higher level your own bows, the trueshot bow is a nice quest bow you can make with fletching.

these are the three that benefit rangers although if you make an enchanter at some point jewelrycraft is an option.

also with your foraging skills cooking and brewing are easy but have less of a visible impact on play.
