Er....it means that the value of the variable in question is less than three.
Honestly, dunno(Grrrr, where is the shrug smiley???). It could mean anything. Different people have different forms of shorthand depending on what makes sense to them.

Perhaps it is a symbol that stands for the fragilness of human existance... a reminder that the heart is only so strong on its own and needs a helpign hand from the true light of existance... true love.
