#1 Apr 16 2004 at 1:41 PM Rating: Decent
Hello everyone, Just wanted to start off by saying I haven't really played since the Beta days. I finally have more time and money (upgrading my system) to be able to play Eq. I have a lev 7 druid on the quellious server. Just seeing if any would at least help me out with power leving or equipment. If you could it would greatlty appriciated. PSt if you would like I play early evenings M,W,Th. Or just send tell just say hello.

Thank you,
Benvareine,

I don't understand why you want to play if you prefer to have money, gear, and levels handed to you. Why take all the trouble of begging for handouts when you can just buy a level 65 all geared up and skip the mobs, quests, content, and pain of playing in the first place?

Man, binverine, I would strongly suggest quitting while you're ahead and not posting to this thread anymore. Every time you post a comment you just make yourself look worse.

I'm surprised the regulars here haven't already formed a posse to find your character and horse whip it across the karanas...

I i dont understand why pepole have to be this way. Were we all not newbies at one point was it not nice when someone would help u out my first char was hard to get to high lvl and once in a while someone higher lvl would give me a hand it is what we should do just rememer at one point or another we were all newbies if u dont want to help than dont but dont try to put another player down one day it will come back to haunt u and yes i may be opening pandoras box but oh well it is a game u dont have to be so rude.
#9 Apr 16 2004 at 4:23 PM Rating: Decent
So Tarv what I'm hearing you say is that you'll create a toon on quellious, make a bunch of money and give it to him? That's pretty kind of you!

Seriously though, I'm more than willing to help out somebody if they're genuinely in need, but you have to try first before you beg. I know that it might seem like a logical thing to do when you haven't been in the game before, or haven't played for a long time... but people hate it. They hate it in the game, and they REALLY hate it when they find it still happening in real life, on a message board.

Shadow have you ever come across the word humour?

I would have thought that it was fairly obvious that it was written mainly for Dan's benefit.

that said rule No1 of eq is Do not beg. if you live by that rule alone you will go a long way.

I just dont like to see that i mean yes it may have been a joke but look how u worded it. Some people dont see it that way expesialy a newbie i have seen people give up playing for stuff like that and there is people in the game that r the way u quoted that. I was in the bazaar a few days ago and there was a new wizzy tring to buy spells and they r not cheap and asked for some help and one person put an /ooc out dont help the dam newbies and it just ticks me off. Sorry if I did not undstand u the way u meant it just bugs me to see that.

P.S no i dont want a period hehe

Shadow, there is a rather big distinction between begging for help and being the recipient of random acts of kindness. It is those random, unsolicited acts of generosity - a drive-by buff or a piece of gear that make the world a better place.

Begging for help is no different here, in game, or in real life. If you want to choose to be that person on the side of the highway off-ramp with the sign about how you can't afford food then by all means, stand there. You won't get anything from me. But take that same person and put him somewhere where he is trying to help himself, and people will help. It is a big distinction.

Giving feels good when you help someone who is deserving. Handing out money to some guy with a sign that gets up and drives off in a BMW makes the giver feel like a patsy. We have had 5 EQ years of people begging for heals, plat, gear and honestly, it is so completely pervasive that it is hard to find the ones in real need.

For a level 7 druid to stand up and claim dire need is ridiculous. He could spend 20 minutes in EC killing spiderlings and have enough spiderling silk to sell to equip himself in what was planar-ready gear 4 years ago.

Begging for gear or plat in today's EQ market economy only shows one thing - complete lack of desire to do anything for onself.

Okay people, lay off Tarv. I'M the one who tore into binverine about being an idiot for begging on these message boards.

Tarv was being funny(I got a good laugh out of it anywaysSmiley: smile), and he was only doing it in response to my criticism. So if you want to go after someone come after me.

That having been said, I STILL think binverine looks more like a donkey every time a post pops up from them on this thread.

Yes but did u know that when u first started. Yes it is hard to find the ones that need it for real i understand that but i was in the 20ish range before someone told me here go kill this and sell this this person said they have not played seince the beta days that was over 5 years ago and how often do u see the random acts of kindness know days i will help when i can. But to tell u the truth when u first started what did u know not jack r atleast i did not.

Eventually this game is going to be all required level items. If you notice in GoD the items are now required level. Not recommended level. I'm willing to bet in EQ2 thats the way it will be and perhaps eventually in EQ1 eventually. Notice with the casiono and tribute system they are tying to get rid of people selling items and such. The casino IMO is to suck the PP out of EQ and the tribute system is to stop people from selling items and give them to the tribute vendor instead. Just IMO.

i still remember the first item that was ever givin to me. i was lost in gfay (at that time gfay was huge to me) and stumbled upon somone sittin around waitin for the nexxus portal. i politely asked for directions back, and to my wonderous surprise the responded by handing me a shissar scale cloak, giving me directions, and sending me on my way. i nearly fell over my own feet thanking them. unfortuanatly i forgot there name, but never forgot how nice it was. that bein said, i never ask for stuff, but you'd be amazed how much stuff ppl will give ya if ya just strike up polite conversations with random ppl. and also remember to pass on the kindness, when my roomate started playin he stumbled upon a poor lost dwarf in bb and told me, i instantly grabbed my mule, grabbed a few items, and headed over to them, buffed him with what gimp buffs i had, and sent him on his way. it was an awsome feeling.

This is just a reflection of who you are in real life. In real life, if I am lost, I don't expect people to lead me to where I want to go. I buy a map and try to figure it out myself. If I don't understand something, I try to go to a library or get on the web and try to learn as much as possible. Then try to ask intelligent questions to knowledgeable people for things I still didn't understand. I don't expect them to tell me everything they know so I don't have to do any work. If you want something, put some work in yourself and people will respect you for that.

It's the same way in EQ. When I was a newbie, I never asked for anything from anyone. I learned about things from boards like this one and others. I read all that was interesting to me and I went on to try out things I have learned from boards. I did quests and farmed things I wanted on my own. Those I could not do on my own, I asked friends to help me, if they had time. I was forever grateful for those who helped me in the past and I let them know.

If you go on begging in EQ for things you want, it makes you look like a very selfish and lazy person. That's the primary reason why people don't like to hear people beg. Many people worked hard to be where they are and they take pride in their work ethic and their accomplishments. If you want to tarnish your image by begging, go right on ahead. If you want to make yourself look like someone who is self sufficient and proud, stop begging and go earn your pay. If you read boards like this one or eqtraders.com, you can find hundreds things you can farm and sell to make money at your level. You just have to make the effort. You will feel much better about yourself if you do that. Specially for someone who hasn't even reached level 10, for god's sake.

Benverine if your still reading this thread after the flame I would recommend you do the newbie armor class quest for your druid. It has some real nice armor that will take you threw a number of levels. As for a weapon you will find that druids don't really use a weapon much they cast spells and need a nice mana pool so look for some items with wisdom or mana on them. As for money spiderling silk, spider silk and different animal pelts sell well in the bazaar. The drops in EC sell for a good price to the merchants. Levleing would be EC, PC then Marus Seru or HH keep.

Good Luck.

Very good post Shylee, however that involves work on his behalf and for some reason i can't see him moving from Pod lift without a 10+ damage weapon all slot filled with 40+ gear and temp.

I still can't credit that someone had the ordasity <sp?> to beg here of all places, we will help at every turn if you ask the right questions.

We will endevour to teach you what we know about your class, your abilities, how to mold seemlessly into groups, how to make PP, what to upgrade to. But we will NEVER do it for you.

We may out of the kindness of our hearts give you gear if your on our server, providing you thank us for our help but never repeat never if you beg for it.

The audacity...

Really we all hate beggars in EQ and it is even more bothersome on these Forums. How many of us have not been irked to the point of screaming by the in-gamers pestering for handouts?
(Kind of like RL if you walk down bigger city streets.)

Just had to share this though...
Was sitting in PoK and medding with my SK and I get a tell out of the blue. Guy (I assume) says he has a level 1 SK and wants some equipment. Well I do not usually keep much extra equipment ON ME except for some pet weapons. So I say, I got some rusty weapons you can have :)...No response and he never replied...

What an ingrate, I would have killed (and did) for some rusty 2-hander when I was level 1!

OK, surprisingly, I am gonna step in for Binverine here. Me the anti-twink anti-IG, anti-PLer.

Bin, I completely understand your reasoning and request. It is not a a bad request, but one that should be fulfilled in a different manner than you are asking.

If you have not played since beta then there are two factors coming into play here: 1) you are accustomed to a very slow-grind game that was played pre-expansion. 2) You are likely intimidated by all of the changes and upgrades.

Take heart, all of those changes are easy to get to know...especially since you have been away so long...you would have to re-learn a lot anyway. Now there is more, but!...the new changes have made it far easier to level and become an active part of the community.

Here is my advice to you...Go to the quests area of Alla and look up your druid newbie armor quests. It will be directly related to your race (halfling druids have different newbie armor than wood elf druids, for example). Make a list of all of the items you will need and what drops them. I am going to give the following advice assuming that you have nothing. Go out with your level 7 druid and kill everything you can, start with a skellie with a weapon that you can use or you could even do an /ooc for a rusty weapon of whatever kind...that is the kind of newbie begging people are always willing to help with. Then kill everything you can and sell stuff until you can afford leather armor. All the while, make sure you are not selling off any items that you collect for your newbie armor quest.

As you get the items for the quested pieces, turn it in and upgrade your armor pieces accordingly. This should take you into your early teens from level 7, but more importantly it will get you accustomed with the game play once again and get you re-acquainted with your little druid.

While the newbie armor is not twink gear and make you uber...there is a lot of personal satisfaction in obtaining it. I respect a player at 15 running around in newbie armor than a 15th level running around in gear that my 50th cannot afford.

I would then look into a guild...keep your eyes open for guilds that are recruiting. On my server I have seen alot of guilds pop up recently that cater specifically to the lower levels. This is what you want so that you can adventure with others of your level. You will also run into people who have mains that can drop you a weapon or magic item from time to time. While the purists will call that twinking, I like to roleplay it (hey buddy, I like adventurng with you. I have a really high level friend who was in a dungeon the other day and got this cool sword. He does not need it so he wondered if you might like it?)

This site has most of the information you will need about quests, items, equipment and spells. Use the site and discover what you can. You can /ooc and usually get questions answered as well. Now, with the exception of something like "/ooc I am just coming back to the game and am in need of a weapon to start off...can someone donate a 1hb weapon for my use? I would be grateful", I would not recommend begging. If you just come back and have nothing, people will drop some small items, especially weapons to you. But that is where the asking for stuff or begging should stop. Those that help may check in with you later on and be willing to help some more if they see you take their donation and put it to work. If you run around begging you are gonna get a bad rep and people will not help or even group with you later on.

So, Bin, good luck. Welcome back. You will have fun...but remember leveling is a by-product of playing the game, not the other way around. Enjoy!

Sorry, but I really have lost all patience with posters asking for handouts and what to do and where to go as a newbie.

It may seem a bit harsh, but frankly if you have to ask these questions you have picked the wrong game. Better to go back to your Playstation or whatever.

Recently while gathering some various tradeskill items I had to spend some time in some of my old newbie hunting grounds. And as it happened, had to hunt some of the old mobs for the drops I needed.

Not only is there now many, many more times the number of mobs wandering around, they actually drop real money.

Back in the day, you had to sit around an wait for the mobs to respawn, they never dropped anything except the occasional rusty weapon or a couple of silver, well maybe a Malachite once in a while as well.

While at the same time you had to stay out of the clutches of the few wandering red mobs that would chase you clear across the zone unless you could make it to a guard. Did you know that the Kobold Missionary is now a static spawn? Sheesh how easy do you need it.

The newbie mobs that I had to kill all dropped substantial gold and platinum, always seem to drop the armour quest pieces and I was picking up things like carnelians as well as the tradeskill stuff I needed. In all the time I have been there (yes it is Steamfont) I have not seen a single newbie character. (If I had they would now be fully equipped with their quest armour and encumbered with gold pieces, as it is all this stuff just lay around rotting).

I see the same thing in East Commons and South Ro. In fact I think the Orcs in South Ro believe that they won the war and now live in an era of total peace and prosperity having eliminated all other races from the face of Norrath. Smiley: smile

Wow, Steamfont was included in other people's versions of everquest too?! I thought it was just mine...

I've probably spent a good amount of time in there total for whatever reason and never seen a single soul, with the exception of when the skele's were going strong... and then there were 2 of us.
