Hi all,

I had great fun playing a Barb, particulary at night before I found light sources, when I couldn't see a thing. When I started a Wood Elf I was delighted to find that in spite of reputed Infravision, I could still see feck all at night when the sun went down.

Is there a button to turn on Infravision?

I'm stuck and can't find my way out.

All assistance greatly received. Many thanks,

Lance

I know how you feel :) my first char ever was a Human warrior.

Also, Gfay is a dark area to begin with, so even with elven vision, it still can get tough.

The one trick I know of that's commonly used, is to turn your gamma up a bit when night falls. (Or even keep it up if it isn't too high). This should help you see a bit better.

I'm sure there are a couple other ideas floating around out there as well.

<~~ Instructions to turn gamma up...if you don't know how to~~>
(all in game)
1) Open options window by hitting Alt-O (or clicking on the window selector)
2) The gamma slider is either on the first tab, or the display tab (can't remember off hand). Slide this to the right to increase gamma, slide to the right to decrease.
<~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~>

Good luck :)

Lol. Yup. A friend of mine started his first character there. Got frustrated with it, but was still having fun. He started up a DE character at some point. He yelled and practically jumped back out of his chair when he first appeared due to how much brigter things were (ultravision and no fog!).

There are two things to check:

1. Adjust your um... distance thingie (feck me! Can't remember what it's called. Grr...). Um.. The one that determines how far you can see. After patches, it's pretty common for it to get reset to zero, which will make everything seem really really dark (it's all black past a point). I hate brain farts...

2. Adjust the gamma slider. You should be able to see things pretty clearly with infravision. Stuff will always be "dim" without. You can crank up the gamma in that case, but only to just where you can see things ok.

You should be able to adjust things to your liking. Honestly, things are much better now then they used to be. Somewhere along the line they changed the way light sources work. It used to be that a greater light source basically gave you light in a very small circle around you but illuminated nothing else. Now, you really can see farther. I just remember back in the day when playing my human wizard, that when night fell, I literally could not see far enough to target a mob before it was in agro range. It was that bad. No amount of gamma helped since stuff outside your light range was just not on the screen at all. Now, that stuff is there, it's just dim. This is much better...

Have you tried building a small fire on your desk?

Make it approximately 2/3 of the distance between you and the monitor, and make sure to offset it 60 degrees or you will get a distracting glare offf the monitor screen.

Hope that helps...

I believe by default the far clip pane is set pretty low. I don't know if you have checked this or not, but it can make a world of difference moving it from 0-100.

My main is a Barb warrior, so I feel your pain. If you are a warrior, and appropriate level to obtain it, get a group and try camping a Cobalt Helm. This was a huge upgrade in sight for me, and the AC is nice too. Sure, there are better helms, but you can't tank what you can't see. If you are not a warrior, do a search for other items with Serpent Sight and see if any are within your reach.

I still keep a Glowing Stone Band in the bank for CRs (I am usually bound in PoK). This is also very helpful and is what I used for dark areas before I got the helm.

Prior to that, I used to keep a Greater Light Stone in my inventory to combat the blindness. These are very easy to obtain from killing wisps. It is a pretty good light source, and does not require a hand slot to be used. The only downside is you have to keep it in an inventory slot and not in a bag.

I know what you mean about Dark Elves. The first time I went to PC with my DE SK, I was amazed at what and how far I could see.

Good luck!

My low lvl warrior prefers his Silvery Two Handed Axe, gives you serpent sight too, and makes nice damage... for all those who are not able to get the Cobalt Helm.

For no particulary good reason I found hitting Alt+Enter changed my settings.

I know this is normally used to toggle full screen but I am running in EQW so it is always in a window. The display area did not change but suddenly it was a lot brighter.

It does seem as if this changes from day to day. Sometimes it is dark sometimes it is light. Whether it is normally light and has dark periods or normally dark and has light periods is one of those questions we'll probably never know the answer to.

Nice cheap lightsource quest doable at level 1. Chialle's Friendship Ring. It is a ring so no armor slots used on a low level character and has +hp as well. Just pick up some groundspawn fruit and hand it in. And I don't think anyone starts off KoS in Shar Vahl (Not sure on Erudite Necros - Check before trying).

Shar Vahl is indifferent to everyone at the start (Vah Shir may have positive faction...would have to check) so no one is KoS there :)

The alt-enter thing is something else I've seen, and forgot about. This works as it does something to force a change in the brightness, not sure exactly what, but something. Can't hurt to give it a shot.

The cobalt helm is a bit high, and the wrong class for the poster ;), but he should be able to pickup a GLS pretty easy. WC has a decent droprate of them, as I'm sure the island between Erudin and Qeynos does too.

Also, you could donate some of your loot to the tribute master and turn on "Gift of the Enchanters" (faerune). This will definitely help you see sheeeeete!

Clip plane.

Adjusting your clip plane may very well help. I know some people keep it set pretty low due to lag issues. And, as others have said, patches do strange things to display settings.

Thanks for all your help.

I preferred Merlinstones' suggestion but unfortunately my desk caught light and destroyed my pc before the fire brigade arrived.

So it turned out not such a good suggestion after all. Watch out if you were thinking of trying this yourself Merlinstone. Once I get EQ onto my new PC I'll probably try it without the petrol to get it going, should be better then.
