Afternoon Everyone,

Sitting here at work waiting for a client to come in and just thought I would ask everyone their top 5 RPG list in order to spark some controversy. Here's mine:

1.) Everquest - Wasted most of my time (and money) on this one but it is by far the best
2.) Bards Tale III (C64 Game Only)
3.) Pool of Radiance (again, C64 only)
4.) Any Might & Magic series games (2-9)
5.) Wizardry (the first and only true wizardry)

Please be kind and let me know your favorite. You can even do a top 10 but my client is here and I have to log.

If you are including all game systems:

1> Final Fantasy 7
2> Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
3> Final Fantasy 3
4> Final Fantasy 10
5> Fallout

I'm sure there are others that rank pretty high but since these were the first to mind...they must be my top 5 :)

Tell your client to go home and that you're busy with "important" things...

1) Has got to be EQ, never have I amassed so much playing time in a game, nor have I been so addicted.

2) The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by Infocom (Is or is not an rpg.../shrug)

3) Might & Magic 2 (I can still remember listening to Warrant while playing that game... yuck)

4) Zork 1, Hollywood Hijinx, Wishbringer

5) Bards tale 2 (Since I started writing this I haven't been able to get the song that plays in the guild out of my head.)

ROFL!

I still can remember about half of BT3's bard songs. I will start to whistle one in the middle of doing something and then wonder where the hell it came from and why I know it. Then it will dawn on me that its from BT3. Its kinda wierd how that happens considering I haven't owned a c64 or even played the game for like 15 years.

I am a geek. However its probably better to whistle that then half the crap that came out in the mid to late 80's.

In no special order:
(1) Everquest
(2) Fallout
(3) Curse of the Azure Bonds
(4) Bard's Tale

I'll leave #5 open. I feel sort of underqualified since I've never played some of the bigger names in CRPGs. Only played one Final Fantasy (VIII), one Ultima (III), barely remember Might and Magic, etc.

I like CAB more than Pool of Radiance because of the cleaner system (namely, the FIX command) and it had better pacing than most of the later Gold Boxes, especially Secret of the Silver Blades which had that horrible, plodding part with the mountain valley and fighting griffons every four steps. That said, the Dragonlance themed ones were good.

Remember the old Intellivision AD&D game? Where you had to get the axe, boat and.. umm.. key(?) to enter the castle and get the two crown halves? Smiley: lol I mostly remember trying to hit that manic rat and avoiding the green slimes. Then the sequel where you actually played in 1st person, going down corridors until you finally fought the feared minotaur with your platinum sword. Woo!

Beware annoying pop-ups from my links! You may have already won a free vacation!

Go back even further to the Atari game 'Adventure'. When you were the box and had to run into everything to pick it up...you had to stop (never kill) the dragons with the thing that supposed to be a sword but looked more like an arrow.

Those were the days of gaming....none of this DX9 crap. :)

Didn't the sword in adventure only go in one direction?

Didn't the arrow in the AD&D game on the intellivision bounce off walls and actually come back and hit you?

/sniff

It's all coming back to me now.

All Great games!
Keep it coming

Great thread.

Let's see...

1) Everquest: No question this is the only game I care about enough to post on message boards while I am at work! ;-)

2) Morrowinds: Mainly because I have an XBox in my bedroom and not a PC...so I got into this game...only non-sports console game I really have gotten into.

3) Suspended: Not a true RP game, but like Hitchhiker an Infocom text adventure. Was very unique and challenging when it came out (which was something like 1986). You wee a cryogenically suspended brain that controlled all of the resources of a planet (weather, food production, etc). The planet suffers an earthquake and the facilities are off line. You have 5 robots to use to get the systems up in a set amount of time...each one has a different sensory capability (sight, hearing, smelling, touch and language). You orchestrated the various robots into repairing the facility. Was lots of fun.

4) Ultima Online: I know, it is nothing compared to what we have now, but for it's day it was awesome and the game that really gave the genre it's leg-up. (Damn PKers! hehe)

5) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: Fun game.

What a hard list. I like the Medal of Honor/Battlefields/Call of Duty trio. I am not too into first person shooters, but the WWII genre is great and really requires strategy over run and gun to really play well.

Question, did anyone ever play the old text RPG game on Compuserve? I am talking circa 1991-1994. Was lots of fun...cannot recall the name. Completely text based but in a text manner you would run into other people also online. You would walk in a room and get a room description and included would be the names of the people who are also in the room. Was fun and really got my mind into the whole massive multiplayer mode way back then.

The original Ultima series...not UO, I've never played that. Ultima 7 (with 7.5) is one of the best RPGs I've ever played. 5, 4, and 6, in order of my love for them, come next.

I greatly enjoyed the Magic Candle series, although was only able to beat 1 and 2 (3 had some horrible corruption bugs that never were fixed, as far as I know, although it might have been my crappy computer at the time). I'd love to play those through again if anyone knows of any emulators for them...

I played almost all of the Might and Magic series, except for 3, 8, and 9, and I would probably say that 4-5 (the Xeen pair) were my favorites. Again, I'd love to play these again, emulated, I think I still have the disks sitting around somewhere.

I only played a few Wizardry and Bard's Tale games, but they were fun.

I also had fun with some of the SSI AD&D Gold Box games, especially the high level ones like Pools of Darkness and Dark Queen of Krynn. Treasures of the Savage Frontier was fun too.

I enjoyed Arena and Daggerfall but never beat them; Morrowind, however, I played all the way through and enjoyed very much. I'd probably have started a new character and played through again if it weren't for EQ becoming my gaming focus. Smiley: grin

I've enjoyed many others, including on consoles, but those are the main computer ones I can remember. Man, one of these days I need to take an old computer and set it up to run DOS so I can relive some great memories.

Game on,

The Oneiromancer

1) everquest - played 5 years comeing up in may

2) ultima online - played 3 years , finally traded my account for a 2nd eq account :)

3)neverwinter nights - played 3 months (during EQ vacation) good game but i never played it online so i got tired of it eventually

4) realms of despair - 3 years, text based mud . had the best 3rd party client that could be totally automated to run around dungeons killing and looting all night while i slept, and automaticaly quaffed healing potions when i fought . also great for multi-playing , sometimes 10 chars at a time

5)wizardry 1 - thanks bubspeed for bringing back the memories . what would now be considered horrible almost non-graphics but the 1st game i played where your char leveled . countless hours spent in front of my apple ][+ . not online , but nothing was at that time :)

1)EQ - of course, why else are we here?
2)Morrowind - I just wish they would fix that random CTD bug.
3)Fallout - can't believe noone said it yet.
4)Fallout 2 - sinking into a life of crime.......
5)FF3 - spent nearly a year of my life on that one.
6)FF7 - Yuffie rocks!
7)FF8 - Hated triple triad at first, now its the best part of the game.
8)Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale series - couldn't really pick a single one.
9)Return to Krondor - something about it keeps me coming back.
10)Suikoden - stupid name, great game.

Honorable Mentions go to Diablo, FF10, Breath of Fire 2, Cronotrigger, Eye of the Beholder and countless others.

I liked these, in this order...

1)Arcanum
2)Fallout (1+2)
3)Morrowind (+Arena & Daggerfall(same series))
4)Might and Magic III
5)Ultima VII
If I could list a 6th..
6)Knights of the Old Republic

I'd also like to pay homage to a game from the OLD days,
ALTERNATE REALITY!! When it came out for the C-64 (was also IBM, Apple, Atari) it was the best RPG I ever played in my life. I got "The City" and "The Dungeon" when it came out, but the company(Datasoft I believe)went out of business and didn't finish the full series. It was well ahead of it's time!

I played EQ the longest, but that doesn't make it the best. I'll rank it #1 for online RPS's though.

You mean they make other games?

I once tried a a cover demo disk of some game with a guy dressed in chain mail carrying a sword, all he ever did was stand there staring back at me?

Boy, so many games......

I think I'd need to make a full top 10 list and I think I'd have trouble narrowing it down even then!

Here's the real catch, you didn't say it HAD to be a computer game either!!

#1) AD&D(Advanced Dungeons and Dragons)! All hail to the king baby!(talking the pen and paper game here, beat thatSmiley: tongue)

Sounds like a few of us played RPG's on the Commodore-64... Those were the days... swapping in floppy disk after floppy disk and waiting what seemed like forever to enter one of the new "areas"....

To answer teh question:

1. Everquest
2. Zork
3. Secret of the Silver Blades and Curse of the Azure Bond on the C-64
4. Baldur's Gate
5. Neverwinter Nights.. the really old one that was online with either AOL or Compuserver, don't remeber which one

Hmmm I have only played Everquest. First ever "game" well besides your standard Manopoly and such. With the money and time Everquest has taken I don't want to even see another game! I still need to try to work and make a living but even doing that I am in my office trying to figure out how to make more time to play the game!!! rflmao

The "sword" in adventure was an arrow. Remember the bat that would take stuff from you? How about the magnet - handy for getting those inconvenient bat drops out of walls. There is a new toy out there that plays a bunch of the old Atari games, and another that plays Pac Man and a bunch of arcade games. We have both...my six year old loves Adventure. And so, another generation of video game geekdom rolls out....
