I've never been much of a grouper or guildie in my 1.5 years+ in Norrath. I've never leveled past 45, but I do have quite a few characters of many different classes in the level 40 range, so I like to think I at least have a good general understanding of the game up to that point, including different class strategies.
Bards, though, are exempt from all of this. I have never quite understood what makes them such a powerful class. Sometimes when I make a run through PoK I see a newbie OOC, "hey whats the best solo class?" The first thing that comes to my mind is necro, or druid, but there's always a few higher levels that shout out bard.
I know what swarm kiting and chant kiting are, but I've heard a few things about them being nerfed as of late, whatever that means. I also understand how they can be incredibly good solo tools in the right hands, but now and then though I'll hear things like, "no one levels faster than a bard up to 20" or "the fastest powerleveling possible is with bards," which seemed to be a common thought as soon as GoD was released and everyone wanted a high level zerker.
I'm not good friends with any bards, and the ones I've grouped with have always been awkward little players who usually sing either Anthem De Arms or Hymn Of Restoration constantly, and just want to run into the fray like warriors, only succeeding in draining the healer's mana. I attribute this to bad luck on my part, since I know for sure that good ones do exist. You just can't expect a ton from High Keep and lower-level LDoN groups.
So, I ask all of you professional bards: What makes the class excel in areas like powerleveling and leveling in general? It's easy enough to grasp their grouping role, at least the basics of it, but what makes them such good solo characters, good enough that many of the most significant players on my server feel that they are the best? Guides and such online don't seem to do a lot of justice to any class when explaining their tactics.
