I just bought EQ ( and am now waiting 10+ hours to download patch), and was wondering what you think life will be like for a newbie on an established server already.

Almost every single low level person you will see is going to be someone who already has a much higher level character already. I think the biggest problem you will run into is people will think that you are the same way. So if people seem a bit rude or snobby at first, a lot of times it's because they think you know most of the game already. On the other hand, most people that I've run into are very nice and will willingly help you out if you have a question if they know that you honestly don't know the answer. There are a lot of scamers out there who will show up with a level one and start beggin people for weapons and money right off the bat... DON'T BE THAT GUY! That's the quickest way to make people hate you.
You're life will seem to be a bit harder than everyone elses for a while... for example you'll meet a level one, put them on your friends list, and you check back a few days later and they are a level 53, and you are level 8. That's what happens when you start out from zero, you will level slower than the majority of people, but just stick with it, it gets a lot easier as you level up and you have more options for earning money and the like.
The other thing, cancel all plans for the next 5 years because you will most likely begin to smoke the evercrack and not be able to stop... just a warning.

I don't see it being too horrible of a thing. The newbie quest armors (talk to NPCs in the guild building you start in) will give you a nice boost and, if you're savvy, you can save things like quality pelts, spiderling silks, etc and make some extra scratch in the Bazaar. Really, I think it's a question of how you approach it; you obviously know this site exists so if you check up on quests and stuff and ask advice, I don't see where you can't do fine.

Until the 5th anniversary stuff is over with there probably are a few zones that you will want to avoid like the plague: Butcherblock Mountains, and East Commonlands immediately come to mind. As it stands right now they have waves of skeleton armies invading these areas, which can be a real newbie killer. No matter what server, people are always helpful if you need information or advice.

Also you can always shout for help if you are poisoned, diseased, lost, stuck somewhere or else as long as you are on a PvE (="player versus environment", also called "blue")server. Saving each others lifes there is part of the fun after all.

by the way, a buff is something which enhances your character, eg. gives you more hitpoints, better armourclass, faster attack, more strength, better hipoints regenaration etc. for a limited time (duration varies between a couple of ticks - a tick is 6 seconds - to a couple of hours).
and most times, if people find out, that you are a true newbie, they will be very nice :)

The advice here has been very good. If you are worried about people having muchbetter stuff than you it will be less of a problem on a newer server, but already many of the high levels who transferred to Morden Rasp has low level alts with high level equipment. But lots dont and the bazaar is still pretty empty so it probably has the most even starting level. Its actually not that important to enjoying the game, anyway. I have about equal numbers of twinked and untwinked characters and all are fun. Check this site and castersrealm.com for advice on character creation and avoid the zones above for starting now. Halflings start in rivervale but its a very nice newbie zone too for all but evil races. Large races (barbarians, Vah shir) may also be a bit uncomfortable there. Halflings get a bad rap by some but have good starting stats and level a bit faster.
You have started off well by coming here and asking the right questions, this shows you mean business and have an IQ which will put you above the scammers/beggers noted above <And no they are not making it up you will be VERY unpopular if you beg.>

I always advice a new player to start a Ranger as thier first charicter since it is the best class to learn the game, you can fight, get spells at lvl 9 <nice first goal for you> and have various usefull abilities like forage, sneak etc. But most importantly they get a skill called 'track' at level 1 that allows you to search for enemies to kill <Mobs is the ingame term>, this allows you to hunt down the right things to kill <stick to Dark Blue and white coloured or you will be seeing the infamous Loading please wait... alot

All in all EQ is still a friendly place and people will help if they are not busy and asked nicely. It is also very much a get out what you put in style of game and addictive as hell so i hope you left a week or so free and warned your family you might be a hermit for a while.

Sit back and enjoy! When I started, a very experienced player told me, "The first 20 levels for a new player are the most fun you will ever have in this game." This was certainly very true for me. There are so many things to learn about: bankers, vendors, portal stones, etc. and so many places and and characters to experience. It can really be a lot of fun.
A bit of advice: try to not get on the experience treadmill -- there are more important things than getting to level 65. One of them is having fun. Remember, this is a game; it's supposed to be fun.

Never ever /shout in a zone unless you are in real trouble, there is nothing more iritating than people shouting in game for information, and especially spaming it an /ooc is better but do not spam it. - This is not everybody's view but for me it just grates, /ooc - send me a tell - hail me and i'll travel the lenth of the planet for you. /Shout at me forget it.
Can't fault this, do you newbie armour quests .. you'll learn so much about the game, and just do it at your own pace.
As Tarv said, take you time and don't worry - yes you will (maybe) suffer from people that are leveling faster than you, but take your time and enjoy it. Remember up to level 10 you can explore anywhere and not lose anything - make the most of it.
And yes, to agree with Leiany, most people are friendly and WILL help you - just don't shout at them ....its horrid.
Oh god and don't beg please dont beg .. be it powerlevels or equipment.. please :)

Speaking as a newbie myself, I have been very happy on the Morden Rasp server. I started playing the game about 2 weeks ago and there have been plenty of helpful players of mid to high level around to help guide me along.
Since you are just starting out, you might try running a pair of twin characters on separate servers (MR and another *older* one as well).
You could alternate sessions between them for a week or so switching back and forth to decide which enviornment you prefer.
Since both characters would be brand new, you wouldn't be giving anything up if and when you make a choice and abandon one or the other. You will not even have lost any time since you can chalk that up to development of your player skills.
BTW - none of my characters is up past lvl 10 yet so if you need someone to show you the ropes and duo with on MR, I'd be happy to help.
