New Graveyard Zone thoughts...Follow

#27 Apr 07 2004 at 1:23 PM Rating: Decent
If corpses are a lag causer, then why not move the corpses to the new graveyard zone as soon as the rez timer expires?

And, just to keep the players informed on what is going on with their coprses,

"The Grave Master tells you, 'Your essence can no longer return to your body in [insert zone here], Zorash. I have had your body brought to me in the Graveyard. Feel free to come and pay your respects to it and me.'"

It would definately unclutter the areas around LDON entrances this way at any rate.

I would say that it's for the simple reason that a lot of people would give up even trying to go for a corpse run if that were the case. If you just had to play another alt for an hour or so (or whenever the rez timer is up) and then go to the graveyard and get your body, that would make dying much less of pain, and although we all know the SOE wants to make our game playing experience as painless as possible ( :/ ), I don't think that's the result they were trying to acheive with this zone.

No offense, but that's just due to negligence on your part. I can see if your hard drive dies or your neighbor is planting a tree and cuts the cable line and the company drags their feet fixing it or your Aunt Bertha in Tinysville falls ill and you have to go feed her soup or a week, but what you describe is just someone deciding it's too much of a hassle to go get their stuff. Which is your choice, of course, but I find it hard to have sympathy for someone who just didn't bother.

Joph, I'd agree except one thing: SOE doesn't test their patches. There were people who literally got crashed out due to an unexpected server patch after the DX9 installation that still either have trouble playing or can't play. Maybe they need to get a new video card, maybe they have other priorities. I remember when Luclin came out I couldn't play for 2 weeks. If I had died, I would have lost my corpse.

This is a CYA measure by Sony. When they patch, they don't test. That means extended downtime for some people. That means already pissed off people. How much more pissed will they be when they log in to see they can't get their corpse back or they have to wait a millenium for a GM to get it for them?

Well, that's a technical issue. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with the graveyard concept as I understand it. I'm just commenting on Zorash saying it's not hard to lose a corpse and then telling the tale of how he died, decided it was too much of a PITA to get his corpse and almost let it rot. Yeah, of course it's not hard to lose a corpse if you never make any attempt at getting it.

I'd lump crappy patches into the same load as cut cablelines, sick aunts, plague, floods, swarms of locusts and other acts of God.

Well..

My main thought is that this will not have any direct effect on me. I have never had a corpse rot for more than maybe 1 day. The fact that my corpse will pop in 7 days in the graveyard zone will not stop me from, worst case scenario, paying a Necro to summon one of my toons corpses ASAP after it is killed.

I can say that I have heard of some folks spending days and loosing a full level trying to recover their corpse from PoFear. And the point about your toon getting killed and you leaving for vacation for a week before you can relog to recover corpse is a good one too. Therefore, its probably a good thing. At any rate, it can't hurt!

Another one to add to your list, Jophiel. Sometimes - especially on LDoN where leaving is more of an issue - when someone keeps saying "I really have to go soon", I get a strong mental image of an irate parent about to pull the plug.

It takes only a minor leap of my fevered imagination to visualise the conversation going

"Get off that computer now"
"Gee Mom, I have to get my corpse back"
"I've had enough of this. Your schoolwork is suffering while you play silly games. You're grounded from the internet for a week!"

I know you never see people begging for gear "'cos my mum stopped me playing and my corpse rotted" but I do wonder. Smiley: smile

This is another measure like the shared bank slot whose sole porpoise is to relieve pressure on CS. Now they no longer have to retrieve corpses from strange places they can just say "Wait and visit Shadowrest". I'm sure a lot of players are keen on giving relief to GMs.

I like the concept of the graveyard - I lost my first character and all the stuff after being killed in Gfay at night by orcs at level 14 since I didnt know about /loc. More important was the fact that my second pally lost all her gear when POP came out (she was walking in oasis and then got message you have fallen and taken 10,000 damage ... loading please wait). I was bound in BB and had to take the boat back to FP to make CR, NP except computer kept crashing to desktop after a couple minutes and ended up it was a week before a patch fixed that problem so I could log on and discover corpse had rotted with all equipment (was lv 29 at that point).

Almost didnt start playing again after that incident, grave yard will avoid both of these problems and I think a week delay in getting corpse plus no rez is a sufficient penalty for most of us to want to do a timely CR and rez.

Maybe it'll be a smart "Corpses 'R' Us" kiosk in some central location where you go and collect your corpse. Click on the NPC Corpsefinder General and all your expired corpses drop on the floor with 30 mins left on them

Come on you had the inside track :)

You were not in PoK last night then to hear all the "Where is the corpse npc" shouts ! - painfull

By my reckoning SoE can keep them under wraps for seven days anyway ...

The graveyard zone isn't one I anticipate ever using, as I don't log off with corpses strewn about.

My understanding of how it works is that your corpse will be transferred to the GY zone at the point where they would otherwise vanish. Also, I swore I read that the zone could only be accessed by those who have corpses there.

I tend to be in the "the main reason people actually lose their corpse with their stuff on it is because they didn't bother to retrieve it" school of thought. The exceptions are few and far between.

Why do I think this? Because every time I've had someone beg for gear because they lost their corpse, their convoluted stories on how they couldn't access their account and couldn't contact SOE have never held up. Oh, and these people, for some strange reason were always carrying ALL their cash so that's gone too.

The graveyard zone will be great for these poor unfortunates. Smiley: clap

Well, seeings as I have NEVER lost a corpse since I was truly a noob, and died in the water in Felwithe (lol, funny story, I'll tell ya sometime...) I dont think I will ever NEED this zone.

HOWEVER, I fully intend to leave some insignificant item on my next corpse, just so that I can check this zone out. The pics posted below have definitely gotten my attention. lol

Just what is going on in PoK when you see someone killing another player over and over...leaving about 50 corpses laying around?
Just wondering...Smiley: confused

Regarding the bodies in PoK.

Are you on a PVP server? Because you can't attack anyone in PoK on a regular server.

I have seen piles of corpses, artistically arranged there though. My assumption is that they're taking a dive down the library elevator shaft and dragging the bodies somewhere to arrange.

There are 2 possibilities I can think of. It's a throwaway toon or they're trying to level down to fight Naggy or Vox.

alwayslost:

Severtal Necro spells, most notably their ressurrection spell, require an Essence Emerald. This gem is obtained by sacrificing a player of level above 46. Basically the necro casts a spell and the player dies an unrezzable death to get the EE. The key thing is that these gems are valuable, necros need them. So if you are tired of your 65 warrior and want to delete him you have him sacrificed down to 46 first and this gives you a fairly large sum of money to start your new character with.

People have received warnings for leaving too many corpses around while doing this.
