Mage/WizFollow

I was thinking of make a Mage or Wiz, I only played tanks and a cleric so far and only up to lvl 48. In low and high end groups what do you prefer in your group a Mage or Wiz?

I just dont want to have to many problems finding groups, I know they can both solo but that gets boring. Please tell me who is more wanted in groups :)

Thanks

mages are more wanted because of the dps. a wizard is great for fast burns when the sh*t hits the fan but when they have to stop and med a mage can keep going in between med sessions with the pet. anyways thats how I see it. I always look for both when assembling a group for dps. just mages have it a little better me thinks cause of the pet factor.
of course thanx to the last patch pathing is fubar and pets take some drunken paths....

IMHO,

A magician is easier to level than a wizard simply because the magician doesn't need to exert as much mana per kill. In order to gain XP the magician simply needs to hit the mob once with a spell and then let the pet finish him off (provided the pet is strong enough). The pet is one of the strongest in the game, which allows the magician the ability to solo. It should be noted that the magician doesn't get Root or Lull lines of spells (except for the earth elemental's ability), thus breaking camps solo can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

Wizards are still a very cool class to play and will outdamage the mage at higher levels with their direct nukes. The wizard's ability to teleport and evac are very useful in a sticky situation. Both the mage and wizard are very welcome in groups for added DPS. The wizard is more challenging to level if you are apt solo, but both classes can really help redefine and increase the power of a group.

I have a 65 wizard and it's not an easy life. You only become powerful when you hit level 65 and attain strike of solusek. It's a little easier once you get more FT gear and more AAs. The hardest part of leveling up a wizard is levels 50-65. Anything under that you can pretty much get a group, but during the listed range it's complete and utter hell if you are trying to do pick up groups.
Anyways, generally most wizards cast between 1-3 nukes a battle and that is usually enough, depending on how good the group is. I sometimes nuke more when we have low dps members but I cannot sustain that due to my low FT. I've seen maxxed out FT wizards nuke constantly and never run out of mana.
Wizards can also quad and solo on their own time but it is very boring and not overly exciting.
I haven't played a mage, but I am at times jealous at what they can do but that fades away when I do a 6000 critical on strike of solusek =)

All things considered it comes down to personal preference and playstyle.

I play both classes. I prefer my Wizard to my Mage. Will tell you that with my guild (Time/GoD/EP raiding guild)a Wizard app is much more desired then a Mage app. Interesting considering that we have 14 Wizards and 8 Mages-all level 65 with over 150AA.

But my Mage has some competition now. I have a 39 Necro that I can see easily replacing the Mage as my "relaxation" toon. Necromancer has a great variety of spells, some good abilities and great pets. You may wish to consider a Necro if your heart is set on a pet class.

You might also want to consider the needs of your guild? Do they have enough Mages/Wizzies? Ask some guildies what they think will be needed more for raids and stuff.

Both classes are great in different ways. Mages can CoH, and summon mod rods and all kinds of cool toys. They have a pet that can help the MA or root an add if a pull goes bad and you don't have a mezzer.

Wizzies can nuke, snare, root, stun and EVAC people as well as getting groups to zones that nobody else can.

I have friends that play both classes (one of my alts is a 53 Wizzy) and either is always welcome in any group I'm in. Overall, prolly a mage would be slightly more desirable though.

As you can see from the responses, it's a fairly even proposition. Both classes have unique abilities that groups like to have.

As usual, it boils down to which one you'd enjoy playing more.

I'm a magician and there is something to be said for the safety net that is your pet. It's an easy class to play, but tricky to play well. On the other hand there is something to be said for a wizard's ability to evac and port, not to mention those juicy wizard nukes.

We're both DPS with some utility. I think the situations where one is preferred over the other has more to do with the utility each class offers for a particular situation, rather than who has better dps. That's just my opinion, of course.

I've never had a lot of trouble finding or creating groups.

This is one of the classic EQ arguements.....

First off, leveling your Wizzard is not as hard as some folks make it out to be. I never really had any trouble finding small groups (PC, MSERU, GD,PAW) up to level 34. Then I quadded in various zones to mid 50s. When not quadding, I would go LFG in various zones (or LDoN) and, if nothing came up quickly, I would start my own groups. Being in a guild, I usually had one or two others to start a group with. The toughest time was from 60-65. I tend to play a lot of LDoNs, and everyone forming a 60's group wants as many 65s as possible to get the highest level dungeon. Those types of groups are more willing to go a bit lower for a healer, slower, or tank, but DPS classes tend to be more plentiful and the level 65s get the groups.

I can say that playing style does play a big role in what class you play...

If you are not in a guild and tend to solo alot... MAGE
If you are in a guild and/or like to group... EITHER
If you like a character that never needs to look for a ride or run somewhere.... WIZZY

I would also like to say that as player whoes main is a Wizzard, I always have lots of fun when grouped with a Mage! Massive DPS and you both take advantage of the pet.

Finally, whatever class you choose, you will usually have no trouble finding a group if you learn to play your class well. Both Wizzies and Mages have good resources ( www.graffe.com for Wizzies ) on the web. I also learned a lot by picking the brains of other wizzards....

My personal preference is to have a mage in my group over a wizard. When you take into account the pet damage mages aren't that far behind wizards in damage output over time, and you usually don't have to worry about aggro issues with a mage as much as a wizard. Those big nukes are pretty, but they tick the mobs off to no end.Smiley: yikes

Again, its whether or not you play your class well. This usually is not an issue with a good wizzy, unless, of course, the groups tank isn't doing a good job holding argo. In that case your healers, slowers and other DPS classes (including mages) are in trouble too.

As a 58 wiz I can tell you I do not get asked into many groups. I had to learn to solo. The good news is, soloing as a wiz seems fairly simple and fairly good xp. I got groups without too much trouble up to almost level 50 by going to the zone and OOCing. When I put myself up on /lfg I hardly ever get asked.

If you want to be asked for groups, why be either a mage or a wiz? Be a chanter.

I don't know if mages have it that much better. Personally, if the choice is being a mage or a wiz, I'm glad I'm a wiz.

I also think I'm more valuable to a group than a mage is. I don't know which has the best dps but I'd rather group with somebody that can evac me or TL me and have the burst dps in addition to being able to maintain good dps over time. It hardly ever happens that I'm in a group that pulls so fast that I run out of mana and if they are pulling that fast I just med through a mob once in a while to keep my mana up so I'm ready if we need a burst or an evac. Groups don't complain if you med through, they only complain if you make them stop pulling to wait for you to med or you don't have the mana when they need an evac or a burst.

Long ago (like over 2 years ago now) I played in lots of pickup groups in the Overthere and I built a bias toward mage over wizard because so many wizards would overnuke early. However, recently I've been playing lots of LDoN missions (levels 50-60+ just dinged 62 last night yay!) and the wizards I have run into have all been great. My little theory is that it isn't a terribly easy class to play thus the people who made it this far must have learned something.

My current guild is imploding :( but we did need wizards over mages, but we sort of needed both.

Several times I have read on this forum that 65 wizards with some large number of AA's are just amazing. I don't travel in these circles so I don't know firsthand.

As always, I would recommend sticking with what you enjoy and I'd try em both. It helps to take the long view of things here. If one class genuinely had major problems, SOE is probably going to mess with it over time so by the time you are 65 with 142 AA's, who knows what class will rock?

Hey guys Daevid here a 65 wiz...

I have had my wizard for about 3 1/2 years. I have a love-hate relationship with him. Lots of these guys are talking about the difficulty of a wiz getting a group at certain levels. I have to agree that from 40-60, I struggled endlessly to get groups. I never played a mage so I don't know if they run into the same rut but I think that they would be susceptible to the same problem for the same reasons.

Each class has their obvious advantages/disadvantages. But I will say this.. When it comes to a level 65 group and I am LFG, I usually beat out a mage for that last dps spot to fill. It is true that we have to do our best to keep the reputation of heavy DPS until we get those level 63+ spells. But man when you get up there... everyone is glad to have a wizard around. And then you got the mana burn thing... I did 8k+ one one guy at a raid and thats with only 20 AAs. I love it. No one else can do it. And that is something everyone in the group can appreciate. Finally, after that raid is over, you cast your teleport spell and everyone goes home safe in a flash.

If you make a wiz, just learn 2 very important things.
1. Learn when to nuke and know your spells.
2. Get your concussion spell and that DD aggro you might get is no longer a problem. =)
