Every time we get one of these threads, if it hangs around for long enough we end up with every possible combination in the game being recommended. Mostly with good reasoning behind it.
Just goes to show how well the classes really are balanced.
Personally I have duoed a ranger/druid combo for a long time now and so have a strong bias toward that pairing. People keep telling me that I will run into tanking problems, but not so far (60/61 at present). By the time I really do hit the unslowed tanking/damage rate problem we will have changed tactics to use more ranged damage anyway
.
What I have liked the most about this pairing is its ability to handle a very divers range of situations. It works all the way from simple soloing camps, through mass farming to raiding.
Personally I object to the "bot" concept I believe that if some one is going to duo and take up two group slots then they are expected to deliver at the same level as two non duoed characters (if you are soloing you can kill yourself and waste your time as much as you like, but not in a group). So I like duos that allow the player the chance to play both characters to the full.
For this reason I will no longer duo the chanter/druid or chanter/ranger or cleric/anything combo in groups or raids. When things get tough and really need your best effort I don't think you can contribute well enough with the more complex duos to justify taking up the slot. Of course some times there is no choice due to lack of classes avaiable, but these times are usually the ones that convince me that I'm right about not duoing the more difficult classes, lol.
With a ranger/druid in raid situations, most of the time they are simply there for DPS, so it is easy, as long as the ranger is in range they can both do there thing with little fuss, and in fact it could be argued that some one duoing a ranger/druid is more effective than two seperate players, as the one player can cover easily, what does it matter (for the most part) whether it is the druid or the ranger who snares or roots? Both can patch heal, sure the ranger heal is almost useless, but at least he can drop a few points on while the druid casts a bigger spell. The point being that for the most part both a ranger and a druid are paying attention to the same issues in a group or raid situation.
The one time where it does not work is where the druid is in a heal rotation, in this case the ranger may as well not be there and it is a waste of a slot, either that or sooner or later you are going to have a fluffed heal rote and inevitably a wipe.
Although I agree with Samira the chanter/druid combo is great fun and if I am wanting to do some rapid farming this is
the best combo I'm convinced, but in the case of raiding it just gets too difficult. At the end of the day the druid will end up a wasted slot, that would have been much better filled by a "live" player. Either that or the Chanter will be doing a bum job.
The "good" things about a ranger/druid pair for soloing?
They can get anywhere in the world of EQ faster and safer than any other pairing, yes even to the depths of dungeons.
They can find any given mob faster and safer than any other pairing.
Their combined DPS is formidable, ranks up there with the classic DPS pet classes.
Their tactical range is as wide or even perhaps wider than any other pairing, all the way from kiting, AoEing, toe to toe duking it out to boring old root and rot.
Their weakness?
Although the ranger/druid's strongest forms of offense are beautifully stackable, they are also often restricted to outdoors/animal only.
Wolf form, once a very usefull tool, has been rendered virtually useless in nearly all the later zones. Some thing akin the Chanter's Boon of Garoo spell being turned into toilet paper! {:frown:]
