I was talk to someone the other day, and they said that untill higher lvls 45+ that a rouge and cleric is a good duoing team. I always thought rouges were low xp and wouldnt make a good tank. So how could this be a good match? Anyhow, just curious on what you guys think of this. Is this guy right or is he crazy?

It would be a nice team to two-box in a group, but a rogue tanking will be lacking in HP's...

Only thing I could think of is that the Rogue would backstab and keep agro while the cleric chain healed. Or at lower levels the cleric was tanking and rogue backstabbing. Don't think that rogue would have enough HPs even with complete heal later for this to work much over level 20 or so unless you had a single pull setting.

Anyone actually tried this?

I do remember a Mistmore LDON where I was 1 of 3 clcs along with a mage who grouped with a rogue who was MT - very successful since we kept rogue healed and were able to add nukes & roots along with necro. This was mid 30s, howwever, the Rogue was Uber Twinked and buffed and I am not sure that it would have worked for normal rogue.

the only combo that would make since with a rogue is a necro let the necro have the agro and fear it with snare and let rogue go to town

To be fair, until higher levels any decent DPS class or highly armored class and a cleric is a good duo team. I used my beastlord as MT in LDoN missions easily until about 52, and can still do so in a pinch - noting that I am fairly well equipped. However, as you point out as stated in your post, after about 50th level the rogue won't be able to sustain the damage needed to tank. Many 50+ exp spots require a plate class main to tank, although there are exceptions such as Nurga.

I have actually done this and past level 50 it simply doesn't work. A full 1/3 of the rogue damage is the backstab and they have poor mitigation as well. The cleric using a complete heal will get aggro on the heal and then you have to heal yourself.

This is a good combination to 2 box in a group though. After 50 the clerics sit on horses and cast heals at a tank. You can run around with your rogue and have great DPS, click the complete heal button with your bot cleric when applicable.

If you want to xp alone, or do not enjoy grouping a great (and widely ignored) duo team is Beastlord/Druid. The druids damage shields, snare, root, DoT, buffs, heals, and ports completly balance the BST class. This duo can go from 40-65 in just Droga. Lot's of opportunities.

Several years ago I tried a rogue and cleric team. My cleric could fear a mob so my rogue could backstab, but I had a REAL problem with my inability to snare mobs when they started to run. If the cleric rooted the mob, then my rogue lost his backstab ability and fear no longer worked.

Then I tried a 3 box with a ranger, rogue, and cleric. But in the end, I dropped the rogue in favor of a shaman to buff and slow for the ranger. Once the shaman could slow 60% I didn't even need to fear the mob anymore.

The best combo in the game by far is a necro and druid. Snare/Fear/Send in necro pet is a sure winner. You can also root and dot mobs to death pretty easily. A druid's root lasts a long time and many necro dots don't break it. I played my pair from lvl 10 to 65 together.

This would be a cumbersome duo at best, due to lack of utility. A buffed cleric would probably be a better 'tank' than the rogue, allowing the rogue to BS until the cleric needs to disengage and heal himself. Or, another viable alternative would be for cleric to chain-stun-nuke with rogue BS'ing. If the rogue has good alchemy skills then they might be able to snare+cleric fear (I don't know what other poisons rogues could apply; is there a Slow?) which is why I've used a ranger+cleric combo instead. Ranger snares and can pick up weapons that proc Slow (I bought a Swarmcaller and still use that into the 50s) which allows the ranger to tank (unless the cleric still wants to!)

Of all melee classes available, I think there is no worse choice than to accompany your cleric with a rogue.

A rogue's face to face melee is next to worthless, our mitigation is bad, we do not have any form of taunt (try to get a mob of a cleric with healing aggro) and you can come up with another dozen of reasons not to pick a rogue for tanking.

Any plate class (well, maybe not bards) is better of for the way you intend to box, and if you really want to take a chain class, pick a ranger.

p.s. I dont know where your got the 'rogues are bad xp' from, but I take it you means 'hitpoints' instead? I can assure you that rogues level as fast as any other class, and in some cases even faster.

Good luck.

I have Duo'ed with a Rogue friend from day one.(march 1999)
I am a Cleric and friend is a Rogue, between the two of us we have explored and fought almost everyday. Yes she does not have the HP or the AC some of the other classes have but she can fight and hang in the with the best of them.

You just have to KNOW your class and toon.

Heh, I know my class enough to tell what our best points and weaknesses are. Thank you very much.

I am not telling you it is impossible to whack mobs with a rogue and cleric duo, I am telling your that the combination is scrappy at best.

You did not really specify whether you and your friend duo all the time, or sporadically. (as in letting your friend tank when you do not have a real tank in your group).

Apart from heals and hp buffs, a rogue-cleric duo lacks just about everything needed to hunt well in the higher levels. No slows, no haste, no (de)buffs, no snare, you name it.

Unless you inted to fear every mob and let the rogue chase it, I wonder what and where you two can hunt together. I'd really like to know that.

Pick a warrior, pally, sk, ranger, monk, beastlord, heck - maybe even a berserker with equal gear as your rogue friend - and they will all outtank (or out DPS or outwhatever) your rogue.

The original question was if a rogue-cleric duo is a good match or not.

I think he is a crazy fool.
