buffs ARE spells . they are cast by yourself or someone else on you or someone else to raise certain stats such as hit points , armor class , mana regeneration , strength etc . there are other spells that are useful for fighting mobs , or for transportation etc. all the casting classes get a variety of spells . a player can load up to 8 spells at a time , some can be buffs , some offensive spells , and you can save the spells in different spell sets to make them easier to load .

so i dont know what you friend is talking about (and i suspect he doesnt either) there being 2 paths

Are you referring to specializations?

If so, what class are you?

Depends on your class and how you play your class. What class are you? Do you group or solo more?

Taken from eq.crgaming.com/misc/pages/special.asp
Here's what I found for you:

Enchanter: Alteration or Conjuration
Alteration is by far the more popular choice as 80% of enchanter spells are of this nature. Conjuration is used for the mezmerisation series of spells.

Magician: Evocation or Conjuration
Evocation-based spells are what a magician usually uses the most during battle (only the 'shock of blades/spikes/swords are conjuration DD based spells), which include all the AE and LOS spells...as well as a few of the DD spells. Conjuration is the other type some magician's prefer to master. More spells than any of a magician's spell are conjuration based.

Wizard: Evocation
There is really no choice with wizards. Wizards do one thing - nuke.

Necromancer: Alteration, Evocation or Conjuration
First, there is Alteration. This covers many of the DoT's, Lifetap's, and Undead Charms. Second, there is Evocation. Last, there is Conjuration. This series covers the pet summoning, darkness and disease series of spells.

Cleric: Alteration
Alteration is by far the most popular choice. It covers heals, cures, roots, and rez spells.

Druid: Conjuration, Alteration or Evocation
Conjuration is mainly useful for Druid's who solo as it is the basis for most of their DoT spells. Evocation specialization is good for both grouping and soloing Druid's. Alteration is the basis of most of the Druid's buffs, heals, and gates.

Shaman: Alteration or Conjuration
Alteration is used for almost all of the Shaman's buffs, heals, regenerations and the like. Conjuration is when you attack more and buff less.

Being a cleric, I chose Alteration. When you tell us your class, I'm sure people will be able to offer better opinions.

Sorry for long post - lots of casting classes :)

People will find it much easier to help you if they can easily read your posts.

Punctuation, paragraphs and real english instead of "dood speak" are all your friends.

That being said, read the discussions of this topic on your class specific sites. That's where you're going to get the most knowledgable opinions. Think about what people are saying and how it relates to your play style. If you're a druid (for example), you should take the advice of experienced druids over what the rest of us yahoos think.
