Upping Skills, Does Wisdom/Intelligence matter?Follow

#1 Mar 29 2004 at 9:46 AM Rating: Decent
I am trying to up a few skills on my Beastlord, mainly my casting skills at the moment. I am familiar with the concept that Wisdom/Intelligence is a factor in the speed by which you up your skill depending on what class you are. What I'm am not sure of however, does that refer to "innate" or "augmented". If I am practicing, should I have all the wisdom enhancing objects on that I can get my hands on, or is the skill up determined by your starting wisdom/Int. Any input or insight on this topic would be of great help...thanks

It is your current wis/int that affects skill ups, including equipment and buffs. Wis also affects the size of your mana pool.

On casting skills - unlike tradeskills - you will not get a skill rise on a failed (fizzled) spell. So as was pointed out in a thread recently one of those enchanter fizzle-reduction buffs like Intellectual Superiority will help you as well.

And it is your WIS/INT at the time, not your starting stat that affects skill rises in many things.

and it is your highest stat (either wis or int) that counts, for example if your int is higher than your wis then your wis has nothing to do with it, so someone with 255int and 1 wis would be better than someone with 250 wis and 250 int

Also, certain trades will use dex or str if it is higher;

Blacksmithing - Highest of Int, Wis, or Str is used.

Fletching - Highest of Int, Wis, or Dex is used.

I am a Ranger. With Wis gear on 180ish wis it took me a long time to get 250 in Jewelcraft. My Str was 255 unbuffed, got blacksmithing to 135 in a couple of hours. My Dex was 212 unbuffed, got a Shammy Dex Buff and skilled 200 in fletching in a day.

In any case, a high wis or int will always help with skill-ups.

Something else that will help you with raisig casting skills is to use the spell that requires the least mana per cast in each type.

For a BL, they would be Minor Healing for alt, Inner Fire for abj, Sense Animals for div, Summon Drink. for conj, and Blast of Frost for evo.

Minor Healing - Target yourself and cast away. Even if you are at full health.
Inner Fire - Again, target yourself and cast away. You don't have to remove it between casts.
Sense Animals - Cast away.
Summon Drink - Cast away. Since Summon Drink is a lvl 22 spell, you may want to spend some training points into conj at first so you don't fizzle to much in the begining (and maybe a int adv/sup form a friendly chanter). Also, once you get yor conj. up to par and get Summon Food, switch to it (since it's a lvl 30 spell and uses the same mana as summon drink, it works better).
Blast of Frost - kill something and target the corpse. Then cast away. It can be a lvl 1 mob.

Or cast damage/spells on pet. I cast my level one pet and blast away at him, he takes no harm, and it is more interesting to look at. Or if you blast yourself, you can use the damage to practice bind wound.

Thanks for all the great input...I worked on it yesterday evening and saw significant increases in my casting skills.
