Necro & Mez & GroupsFollow

I could use some general guidlines on necro grouping. Do DOTs break mez? If I use assist does that include my pet? What exactly is assist? When I type /assist %t does that make me automatically attack whoever my target is, or do I still have to hit auto attack and it changes my target automatically, and does that pertain to my pet?

Had a group earlier in LDoN, I was highest lvl, so they were l. blue and blue to me, and we never ran into any problems, but I felt like I was breaking mez all the time. My first instincts are to DoT, DoT, and more DoT, and DD if need be, but it's hard to tell if I'm targeting a mezzed mob, especially when 3 of the same mob type are grouped together, actually its hard to target at all. I'm sure this wouldn't be the case if I wasn't high lvl and these mobs were red and yellow to me, so any help on the matter would be appreciated.

BTW I'm 26 necro

DoTs do indeed break mez. Any damage done to a mezzed creature will break the mez. Save your DoTs for the mob the main tank is on. DoTing every mob will not only prevent them from being mezzed but will also potentially aggro them all on you instead of on the plate classes. Actually, in most LDoNs, mobs die too quickly for DoTs to be real effective, but that's a case-by-case judgement call on your part. If a mob is dying two ticks into your DoT though you're probably better off using nukes and your pet than 1/5th of a DoT.

Type "/assist off" to turn off auto-attack on assist. There's no good reason to have it on and it'll just cause problems. This will mean you have to hit attack manually, but you won't accidentally break mezzes when assisting the tank as he taunts the mezzed mob before breaking. You'll always have to manually direct your pet -- assist has no effect on it.

I usually only cast my strongest DoT and then nuke, but I can use multiple DoT's on a mob along with pet and DD and take a mob out myself while everyone else is on the MT target. I can control the aggro pretty well, I use feign death all the time, and especially if I have clarity on, I can get rid of an add mob pretty quickly and not have drained my mana, and it's usually my pet taking the damage at that point not another group member. I'd like to hear some other opinions on this.

Also, given that assist doesn't work with my pet or my spells this makes for a pain, because i usually autotarget and DoT immediately, now I have to wait and see which target MT is on and then try to click through a mass of ppl to target it and by that time, the DoT is useless, and my pet is late in getting on the action. I'd like to hear some other suggestions, I'm just trying to make myself as usefull as I can be to the group.

LDoN encounters/kills are generally too quick to DoT, just use a nuke/lifetap and your pet. Pets will no longer break mezzes so that's not a worry anymore.

In lower/mid levels (up to about 50, Screaming Terror works on mobs up to 45), Necros can do crowd control fairly well. I do this a lot, therefore I know which mobs are mezzed and what I can DoT if I need to. Best bet is just to make sure you're assisting the tank and lay off the DoTs (unless you need to snare).

What you need is to make an actual "assist key". Make a social hotkey called "Assist" and it should contain the line:
/assist TankName
Where TankName is the name of your tank (naturally). You'll have to change the name as you change groups or your tank changes, of course. When you press it, you target whatever the tank has targetted. So when a couple mobs come in, all you have to do is hit your assist ket, then send in your pet, cast your spells, etc. No clicking on mobs required on your part.

I use an assist key like this;

/pause 5,/assist ------
/pet attack
/cast 2
/cast 2
/cast 2

The pause makes up for any lag time between the assist, and the actuall targeting. The pet is sent in on the MA's target, and then I cast slow (three times to make up for any fizzles). All this happens with one click and with no chance of hitting the wrong mob.

After the first mob is down, wait until you see the MA swing his weapon, and click again.
