Hopefully they only put the graphics system live, and didn't go live with targeting. We live with it on test, but it has no place at all in production if this is how it is meant to work.

No hope there. I'm not on the test server. I'm on Nameless and MithMarr. And targeting is hosed.

Oh..so are Jboots. My jboots effect wore off and I noticed ZERO difference in speed.

*sigh*

Actually the patch update I read said that for now all zones have exactly the same sky. So I guess that means you will see the moon...when...on...the...moon? *blink blink*

For some reason, that made me want to hunt armadillos and snowbunnies. I need new meds =)

yesterday my human was not really able to enter the dwarfen huts in BB - they seemed to back up from me each time I tried to enter, maybe somehow triggered by myself crouching....

A few things come to mind on this.

Who is the game for.
I don't know the situation in the US but in the UK most households (disclaimer these are people I know and not a nationwide survey)seem to have machines at the 2 to 3 year old status, i.e. replaced every 3 years. Also most of the older ones then get handed to someone else in the house. To my mind the game should be designed to run OK, (notice OK not surperbly) on a 3 yr old machine. Obviously the newer the machine the better it should run, but you shouldn't have to spent~ 800GBP that's about 1600USD (Boy is the dollar low today) every year.
I notice hardware cost was not included in the above calculation.

Timing of the patch
Why was this patch done during a GM event, I lost an entire evening of the event because of this. Before anybody mentions it, I live in Europe where our patches happen during the day/evening.
Surely they could have waited until the GM event was over, after all what was so urgent about this patch.

Graphics
First I have no custom UIs all graphics are as they come except with the gamma lightened a bit i.e. 15% instead of 10%.
Here there are 3 diffrent things happening.
System 1 OK Athlon 2200, MX440 card 1GB ram (21/2yr old)
System 2 Fog, Transparent pieces of kit/people, smooth movement. Athlon 2600 FX550 card 1GB ram
System 3 Jerky movement but solid graphics Athlon 1600 TNT card 768MB system rebuilt so many times it's between 6 years (floppy drive) and 1 year (hard drive) old.

So age dosn't seem to de the overriding problem.

Anyway just some thoughts.

Don

Noticable annoyances:

Getting stuck on ladders and having to /quit to get unstuck.

Getting stuck in geometry, period.

All sorts of targeting issues.
'You can see that' when standing directly in front of whatever.
Trouble targeting corpse to loot.
Long range targets take several attempts to lock on.
Melee range targets not getting hit when attacked, least untl
they aggro to you.

I've seen the fog in Ferrott.

Anyone else notice a minor lag when buffing self or casting spells?

They 'fixed' the sky, now time to work on the ground. 'Seams' to
me they could...:)

I think my biggest complaint is I have the most horrendous work schedule and I can't get on. I had a few windowing problems but I had some not fully supported windows drivers. I took care of that and everythings fine now. But I'll be damned if I have time to get on. And I get stuck places too.

Pretty stars...

WHATS THE POINT OF A NEW PATCH IF IS SCREWS EVERYTHING UP! ISENT A PATCH SUPOSED TO MAKE THE GAME BETTER???

On the EQ website it is stated that only 1% of the EQ population is having problems with this.....??? Think that is an accurate number or are they tring to make theirselves feel better? I finally got mine to work but its very poor quality, until I can afford a new video card. I feel for all people having problems.

A "patch" is simply a change to the software you are using. In this case, it's a graphics change, which has the intent of improving the game. However, any time you change the software some folks will have problems with it. There's no way to avoid that.

The point is that over the next couple weeks, folks will iron out their problems with their graphics cards and DX9, and SOE will fix the little issues that the patch created, and the end result *will* be better then it was prior to the start of the process.

The game is "better" then it was at initial release. The game is better then it was when they released Kunark. The game is better then it was when they released Velious. The game is better then it was when they released Sol. It's better then it was when they released PoP. Every single one of those required patches that made significant changes to the game. Every one of those resulted in bunches of people (like you) ******** that SOE (VI back in the day) "broke" EQ with their patching. Every single one eventually resulted in an improved game.

For those not following along, patching is part of the process, not all of it. However, if they don't patch and "break" some people's games, then we all end up stuck with a game that never improves. The reason EQ is still the most popular MMORPG after 5 years is because it's changed with the times. If it still used the same graphics engine that it had when first released, no one would play it. You gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet folks. Deal with it...

Yeah. I may sound mean and harsh and all that. It's just that this is the *exact* same stuff people ******* about when every other major patch has been released. This is not new. It happens every time. We always see people ***** about the patches. We always see people complain that SOE didn't test well enough. We always see people insist that this will be "the death of EQ". Yet, oddly, even though this exact same process has been going on for 5 years now, EQ is still around. You are not special. Sometimes, your computer wont work correctly with the new software changes in the game. You really do just need to deal with it. /bug any problems you find. Attempt to fix anything you can on your own (loading the latest drivers and DX versions is a start). Keep your system somewhat up to date. Guess what? EQ has been runnning for 5 years. How many of you are using hardware in your compuer that is 5 years old? They literally *cannot* keep the game up to date without breaking some people who use older hardware. That's just the way it is. Sometimes, the solution is to buy newer hardware. Yeah. It sucks to have that come up suddenly, but if it didn't happen today, it would happen sometime in the future anyway. You *will* need to upgrade your ram, and your MB, and your graphics card if you want to keep playing the latest games on your computer. There's just no way around that...

If I had to hazard a guess, I do not think it coincidental that the graphics update was patched in before the expiration of the 1st Quarter of 2004. Personally, I believe that the big shots at Sony mandated that it be live before the quarter ended. It is a sad commentary that SOE did not correct the known issues (as repeatedly reported on test) before they patched this in. Here's to hoping that they fix these issues quickly.

I have the latest DX, My drivers are all uptodate. My video and sound cards are very good.

Since this patch.

My gamma slider does not work.

I am going LD every day and the last two days at least five to six times.

I had no problems before this patch, ran perfectly.

Two characters I have played with for a while now, showed up in different armor. When I asked them about their new armor, they had no new armor. So I am also getting armor that does not belong on that character.

Frankly, I love the game and keep at it but since the patch, it has become a nightmare.

There is no rhyme or reason for all of this.

Once in a while when I crash,I get a message for permission to send what might be the problem to them to resolve and have been saying Yes.

It does not work well and am very unhappy as of tonight.

Was very happy before the patch.

Before that she was often mistaken for Nicole Kidman, but with Directx9 she looks more like Hannibal Lecter.

couple of workarounds
1 - install husband V2.0, helps you negating reality
2 - remove the visor she wears (probably Cold Visor of the Warlord?), I heard them visors show now.
3 - replace her Ry'Gorr Chain Coif she obviously waers with something that shows, e.g. Sensate Reishi Cap (All/ALL)
4 - group with other people than your GF, there should be a guild called "swinger" on every server (so you don't have to look at her)

sorry, was too tempting Smiley: grin

PS: are you sure there was no chanter with here who tranformed her somehow? cast e.g. Night's Dark Terror?

The only problem I saw was more funny than anything else. I zoned into Marus Seru, which is on the light side of the moon, and it was nighttime, and when I looked up in the sky I saw... the moon.

I could be completely wrong about this, but I think I recall reading somewhere about norrath having multiple moons.

I did read those but, I never saw anything that said "You will need to have a new video card" I guess since I never had problems before I never thought to see what I have.

The only thing I would say is that Everquest doesn't usually support the off the shelf cards that come with a lot of computers. Nor does it support most on board video. That it worked before isn't a big surprise, because the card drivers could probably sim a lot of stuff. But as the game updates, they can use the excuse that they only support 2 chip sets to say it's your problem get a new card. Actually, most game companies do that...

Bumping an old thread because I didn't want to start a new one just to gripe about testing and stuff. A few reports from the Fan Faire:
Quote:
[M]y husband and i spoke at length to a really nice QC guy who basically indicated that EQ has gotten so compartmentalized that every department is now this little fiefdom and QC has to try not to offend any dev when checking to see if things work. which, needless to say, really slows down the process beyond all imagining. sony is farming EQ for cash to fund other projects and slowly siphoning out people from the pool to reduce cash cost. which i think is a huge mistake really, i believe people will still play the original EQ for a long time to come even after eq2 comes out. but the QC guy tried to say "it is not our fault we really really do try!" and gave me the names of the bard devs who work to try to do what they can. but their hands are basically tied down by politics. i believe the test server has a high level bard dev-type person on it, so if a /bug report or /feedback is put in on the test server, which has a smaller database of stuff for them to sort out since it is seperate, it gets looked at quicker.

Quote:
My contribution to the questions was to go postal on their development process, asking whether they pay attention when test bard /bug stuff, and asking whether their QA folks were REALLY being paid to Assure Quality, given how recent patches have gone.

I don't think it helped, though.

One former QA person did talk to a few of us after the forums, and told us that test bugs and QA failures are tracked and reported, but it's "management" that decides to release anyhow. I'm pretty sure they knew the DX9 fix was going to be a nightmare.
-- The Concert Hall

The rest of each thread is mostly bard related stuff, but I thought those two quotes were a bit telling on why we continously get pushed out the crap patches that we do.
