How do they rename links in game?Follow

#1 Mar 22 2004 at 6:11 PM Rating: Decent
okay, when i am sitting in pok, someone will be like, lvl 49 Paladin LFG but Paladin will be the linik, to the persons primary weapon or some other gear..... or someone will be like, look at my junk & it will be someones BP, like mithril bp in the link or something, I know this is some sort of modification of a link in a hot button somewhere stored in eq directory, like they get the text link in EQIM & then change the name to something else... I have no idea, can someone link me a page that tells how to do it? or what? is it against sony's tos or eula? would you get in trouble for doing it? I am just curious, I wish to know how it is done, RL I am a tinkerer of sorts....

Shhh.. sekrits, so I really can't tell you. You didn't hear it from me, but I believe that the Steel Warrior had a post that had something that was related to being able to create links. Dunno anything else, sorry.

Oh and remember Google is your friend :wink .

While not a direct quote, this is a paraphrasing of a GM's answer to the question of modified links.

If you're changing something that is only seen by you, such as a custom UI, and has no effect on gameplay, it's legal. If you're changing something that is seen by other people playing the game, or has an effect on gameplay, you're altering SOE's intellectual property and it is a violation of the EULA.

While you're not likely to get in trouble if you do something like that for the simple fact that most people won't bother to report you and the likelyhood of being in the same zone as a GM is small(the vast majority of speeders don't get ticketed either), if the altered link is reported, or a GM/guide happens to see it, you CAN face the consequences of violating the EULA.

Though I do not dismiss that answer and it does make me flinch a little, I will still take a bit of comfort in this quote i.f. .I. .w.e.r.e. .e.v.e.r. .t.o. .d.o. .i.t. :

BUT DIMA, THIS IS ILLEGAL, IM GONNA GET BANNED!
You can't. I've done it in front of Absor on the Discord server (Absor's Condolances) and he just laughed, also in front of many guides and GMs on my server as well, same responses. They cannot do anything to you if you decide to edit a file they tell you to edit.
