I am thinking of going wireless. I have a question about what speed is acceptable to play EQ. I would be within 15 feet of the router, so Super G would work, was wondering if it worth the additional cost.

I use a wireless network and I really love it.

I would probably recommend that you go with something that is 802.11g compliant mostly because you can get better transmission speeds than something that is 802.11b. I have a Netgear WGT624 that I am very happy with. The router configuration and set up is really easy and has more options than the D-Link wireless router I tried previously.

Stay away from the D-Link 802.11g Xtreme G Wireless Router unless you are completely sure that you are getting one with a hardware version greater than C1. I had one of those for a few weeks and had to return it because it would constantly reset itself and lose my net connection. There is also a defect with the C1 hardware version where it emitted an extremely annoying high pitched sound that just about drove me crazy after a few days.

I use a linksys wireless router, the base isn't even in the same building as I am and I don't have any problems. On VERY rare occasions I will get dropped for no reason, but it has never happened in a crucial situation... yet. The speed is fine too, The only place I lag in is the bazaar, but that's easy enought to get around. The one I use is around $100 I think maybe a touch more, but it works great.

Ok. Other then the cool "I'm using this nifty new technology" aspect, is there a real reason why you want/need to use a wireless connection? If you're within 15 feet of the router, why not just buy an ethernet cable and be done with it?

Assuming similar tech levels (ie: Not using land lines built in the 50s), you will always get a faster speed out of a cable then over the air. The connection on your side of your typical cable modem is a "slow" 10mbs. Most OTA connections are "fast" at 1.2mbs, with the "really fast" ones topping out just a bit under 10mbs.

There's always a possibility of interference when using an OTA solution. A land line has none (unless rats have chewed your cables or something). Everything else being equal, there is zero benefit to using a wireless connection in terms of performance. You sacrifice performance for flexibility. Being able to move your laptop around from room to room is convenient. However, if you're at home anyway (which you are), and presumably have a desktop for your computer anyway, why not just wire it up right there? I suppose if you only have a laptop, I could maybe see this, but unless you need to roam around the house while playing EQ, why not just plug that laptop into a network cable instead?

Dunno. That's just my humble opinion. It's just that I see a lot of people who'll do things in a less efficient manner simply becuase it's "new" and "cool". Honestly, I have never seen any need to play EQ down by the pool, or in any area other then at my computer desk. Using wireless for being able to do some network tasks without being tied to the desk is great. But if I'm playing EQ, I'm sitting in one spot for an extended period anyway. Why not use a land line?

My wife and I both play EQ. I bought a D-Link router and wireless network cards. Dunno whether it was a hardware or software problem, but after about an hour and a half, lag was so bad that you had to do a shutdown/restart.

For some reason still unknown, over time, CPU cycles weren't refreshing. Never did figure it out.

I can't comment on other routers, but a DI 614+ router with wireless cards didn't cut it.

I've got a Linksys wireless hub in my apartment, it's dual-band, accepts A, B and G. Use a Linksys B card in my laptop. The wireless connection is fine for EQ. I do have some problems, but that's mostly the laptop itself and our shoddy ISP.

I just went to a wireless router today so that we could get rid of one cable modem. Mom's computer is upstairs in another part of the house, so I ran hers wireless and kept my 3 on cables since they are close to the router. At first I couldnt connect to the interenet on the wireless comp, but I updated the router firmware and it is working fine now. Using a Linksys setup.

For the record, wireless works fine with Everquest and it makes no difference whether you are b or g. The transfer rate for b is faster than any DSL or cable rate, b or g only makes a difference if you are transfering files between computer on the network at your place. So unless you are transfering files from one of your computer to another of your computers it doesn't matter which you choice. Of course with the prices dropping g is almost as cheap as b now.

Just a second to riffraft. Wireless B is 11mbps, while G is a hefty 54mbps (some brands now offer 108mbps). All well and nice except that few residential connections regularly top 10mbps. Unless you do large file transfers on your LAN, you won't notice a difference between B and G.

Go with the cheap option if you want to go wireless.
